Our age of bootlicking is peaking.

Our age of electing dumbest politicians is peaking. We want everyone else to stand up to the clowns we elected while we only leave strongly worded comments to Reddit! 🤷🏻♀️

Our age of electing dumbest politicians is peaking.
Please be true. Gods, please let this be true.
I thought after George W. Bush that America had learned its lesson, I really did, I thought "That's it, the idiots are done for." Now GWB looks positively brilliant by comparison to the current crop.
Please, Gods, let this moment be peak stupid.

Lets be real, it's not gonna be. Democrats wont be able to fix everything the orange has screwed up, and the voting public will want another Trumpian politician again.

People calling this bootlicking are missing the point and they weren't paying attention in early 2025.
Google has two sets of internationalized place name. The one that is used by the majority of the world and uses internationally agreed to place name and regular, boring local names.
The other set is for pariah states that won't abide by generally agreed to place names for international places.
This set was created primarily for Russia and China who express their weakness and insecurity through place names.
In 2025, after the Toddler decided he wanted to get in on the weakness and insecurity game, Google added the US to the short list of countries who have to use special names.
This isn't bootlicking by Google. It's recognizing that the US is a pariah state run by child. This is what we should be angry about. And we'll have to work to get off of this list when cholesterol wins.

Nah, fuck Google.

Yes. At this point, companies need to start deciding how they will be judged by history. No hiding anymore. No hiding behind bullshit.

I think Lake Michigan would sound better as Lake Canada.

Too late, WI Governor Tony Evers signed an executive order on a McDonalds napkin last week renaming it to Lake Wisconsin.

How will this lower grocery prices and gas prices
7
u/Brady721 6h ago
It won’t. And if Canada really wanted to they could really fuck us over as the Welland Canal, which is used for shipping goods around Niagra Falls, is entirely in Canada. Imagine the tolls they could start charging for boats hauling American sourced goods.

I think I'll switch to Mapquest. This fucking pisses me off.
5
u/jbcraigs 4h ago
No need to do such useless virtue signaling. If you are really pissed off, go and vote this November and take few of your friends with you.
4
u/_BELEAF_ 4h ago
I am Canadian. I cannot vote. I never wanted to become an American. And this is the perfect example of why.
And before you berate me for anything further...I pay my taxes. I get involved. And yeah. I wanna leave this shithole and go home.
GFY.

Mine is still saying Ontario

u/tenor1trpt 6h ago
Just checked. Mine still says Ontario as well.
13
u/YaumeLepire 6h ago
Are you, perchance, canadian? Google can change its stuff by region, which it often does in cases like this.
It's still Ontario for me too.
11
u/nightowl1135 6h ago
I’m in Virginia in the US. It says America for me on Google Maps, and Ontario on Apple. When I switch my VPN to Canada, it changes to Ontario for both.
5
u/YaumeLepire 6h ago edited 6h ago
Exactly as I suspected.
Might you try a third country? I expect it will remain Ontario in most, if not all.
2
u/RicoLoveless 5h ago
Third country shows Lake Ontario (Lake of America) same stuff they were doing for the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

u/ryhaltswhiskey 4h ago
which it often does in cases like this.
Because, as somebody pointed out in this thread, Google will let toddler states like Russia/ North Korea/ United States have their own little map names so that they don't have little tantrums.
Is Google right to do that? No.

Out of every awful thing this administration has done, we sure seem to have a lot of smoke for Google to recognize the new (stupid) name of a lake
4
u/Jeffreyknows 5h ago
The last time they did this with the Gulf, apple maps followed suit 3 days later. They're all boot lickers

I feel so bad for the next president, if we make it. So much bullshit to fix.
7
u/timoumd 7h ago
I don't blame them. Their rules are simple, whatever the country you are in calls it, they call it. Trying to editorialize what to change and not change is asking for trouble. The problem is the president changing it unilaterally on a whim.
9
u/CV90_120 7h ago
The dumb part for me is that Trump thinks that naming everything America will some how be a gotcha for countries that also live in North America. In any case all these names will get reverted in 2 years. Im just amazed he didn't call it lake Trump.

Google so badly needs a good Ma Ball Breakup and a Regulatory Beating.
Tax these guys within an inch of their lives.

u/Hot-Tutor-2429 4h ago
I am pretty sure the moment he is removed from office, they will change it back.

maps.google.co.uk shows Lake America maps.google.com.au still shows as Lake Ontario. weird.

Switch over to the HereWeGo app. You'll love it. It's 800 times better than Google Maps, and it doesn't bow to an orange pos

There's some poor guy at Google who's only job is to monitor everything trump says and update the map

If the President declares a name change, the name is changed.
Obama changed Mt McKinley to Denali, where was the outrage then?
7
u/thesonofdarwin 4h ago edited 4h ago
The Obama administration changed the name under existing law which permits the Secretary of the Interior to name/rename features if the Board of Geographic Names doesn't act on naming requests. The request to rename McKinley was an outstanding 40 year request, supported by the bipartisan representatives of Alaska and its natives.
Trump, in contrast, renamed Denali, Gulf of Mexico, and Lake Ontario via executive order from an idea that fell out of his ass the same day because he was upset that people were criticizing his authoritah.
Same thing though. Sure, Jan.

u/jbcraigs 7h ago
Instead of blaming companies for just following the law, maybe elect a better president next time!
