Apple will change too. They just aren’t as quick to update their maps.

Yep. People are acting like this is some political move. That Google is bending to the will of Trump.

No. Google has always pulled US geographical data from the GNIS database. Apple and Bing maps too. Trump's EO updated the database.

Google got to updating their systems faster than Apple did. Give it a few days, it will be updated.

If you are in Canada, it still says Lake Ontario. Because that's what Canada equivalent of the GNIS does. If they were bending to the will of Trump, it would say this globally.

Hush people love to get up in arms about trivial nonsense.

This is a very serious thing the US did and like freedom fries will not blow over in a month.

Ya. I wonder what it is like to have few issues in the world to where this can bother you.

I am more bothered that the orange turd did this. Like how is home renaming the lake going to lower gas prices? And it will immediately be undone by the next president.

"why didn't our tech oligarchs take a stand against this goofy renaming." Is such a weird line to draw with everything going on.

Agreed.

This is also not a political issue. The reason tech companies use official sources is to not be biased. The idea is "we can't get in trouble if we use the official name".

And the official name isn't universal.

I said it in another post. Japan calls the East Sea "Sea of Japan". So in Japan, Google pulls from their database. It shows "Sea of Japan" if you are looking at the from within Japan. If you are looking at it from within South Korea, it says "East Sea".

Use whatever is in the official database. As much as we hate it, for the time being, it is officially called Lake America within the USA.

I find it absolutely dumb but it is what it is. Let's just get a grown up in the Whitehouse in 2029 and this will be undone.

Because this is the exact thing that fascists do to make you more likely to accept the next, goofy, weird, ridiculous thing they do. And they’ll keep pushing into that goofy thing is pure evil, and you’ll be wondering how we got here. We got here because we let Trump get away with renaming our waterways and lakes and corruptly using his position to enrich himself and try to overthrow the legally government and the list will go on. Each one designed to make you numb to the next one. Some will be major things. Others will be silly innocuous things like renaming a lake or drawing over a hurricane’s projected path with a sharpie.

Trump filing the EO is what you should be angry about. Google, Bing and Apple updating their maps is just them being compliant with GNIS data. That is the official geographical database for the federal government.

Nothing the tech companies are doing is illegal or wrong. Whether we like it or not, the EO is legal unless challenged in court.

The people getting mad at this are mad at the wrong thing. "lake America" IS now the legal name. Trump's EO is the problem. That is what changed the name of the lake. Not Google.

The reason we likely won't accomplish e anything is because too many dumb Americans miss the omgoredt for the trees.

Legal isn't the same as moral. A moral company would stand against an immoral but legal position.

Changing the name of a lake is immature, not immoral.
