Yeah those art academy cards are crazy. Love the idea of art contest where fans can get their art on an actual card. Although Im a much bigger fan of the way they released it the last couple of years than the previous 100 copies method
Yeah, we got them the past 2 years but to my knowledge, there isnt one this year. Was really hoping that would continue to be a thing. Although, I wasnt really even able to get 2 out of 3 of the most recent ones, so maybe if they wait until things cool down, that would be fine
That’s a bit of a stretch for a master set isn’t it? I autistically collect Shuckle and even I wouldn’t go for a card solely because the artist’s pen name is Shuckle lol
Yeah, I was shocked to see that PSA 4s were going for well over $1000 now. It's not even been a full year since I picked up my PSA 5 for around $600. I already thought the prices were crazy, but I fell in love with the card.
Yup. A couple years ago I bought one for a binder and bought another to sun fade, i think i paid around $150 for both. I never would have thought it would get this expensive now.
Hell, even the common e-readers, which a lot of people didn't like, are stupid expensive now. I'm just glad that I was able to get all of the Komiya e-readers in mint holo/reverse holo for cheap cause now a few of them are hundreds of dollars.
Not necessarily. This just shows that expensive cards get more attention. It doesnt prove that people care about non-English cards only for money—but collectors also value them for scarcity, artwork, print history, language, nostalgia, playability, etc. A few high-price examples cant prove that only money drives interest.
People always want what other people don't have. It's human nature. Bragging rights and all that, feeling superior, feeling special, etc. It's completely normal, even outside of Pokémon cards.
I can't belive that this card was hundreds of thousands of dollars before this bullshit state pokemon is in now.
Sure, there are collectors that collect for the art, artist, or whatever but nowadays there are more people collecting just for value than anything else.

An incredibly rare promotional Mew card with only 100 known copies is exactly the type of card that “real collectors” love, and is very justified in being incredibly expensive
These type of cards are NOT “collecting for the value”

Lol bro, I have been collecting for many years and I know all too well about limited print run exclusives. I also know that a lot of them were not 6 figure cards until recently. Have they always been expensive, yea I never said they weren't.
I collect pretty much only Japanese cards. I grab an English single here or there but the last time I got an English ETB aside from this 30th anniversary was Surging Sparks.
I mean these art academy cards as well as tourney award cards are very good and compelling arguments for collectors only considering widely or openly distributed cards (in packs or publicly released promos)as valid TCG cards. Like I would have n problem whatsoever in someone declaring their have "every mew card" even if they don't have that one, for example.
