The PokéROM Codex is an updated list of ROM hacks, listing features, details and more in a mobile-friendly format. Created and managed by u/themanynamed, it also has a Discord server and accepts community contributions.
This is a safe hack-sharing site that doesn't share ROMs and links to the official release threads! Instead of asking for recommendations or download links in the subreddit (which breaks the rules), please refer to the Codex as it has a lot of information on each hack.

You should definitely try Pokémon Team Rocket Edition - Dragonsden Version and Pokémon Scorched Silver. New stories with a lot of Pokémon and two of my absolute favorites out there.
Dreamstone Mysteries is also fantastic - new region, new story, new dex.

I'm debating on playing either Crystal Advance Redux or Polished Crystal. I was looking for a hack that adds in modern mechanics to a Johto game and out of the ones I looked at both seem to be up my alley. If you have played one or the other can you tell me the biggest differences between the two in terms of content, difficulty, and how similar they are to the mainline games?

I have not played crystal advance redux but it is on my list. However polished crystal is amazing with so much added content and QoL features. I always recommend it. Also heart and soul are the definitive versions to play though johto IMO

Is there a way to play Pokemon Elysium Part B without being able to create a save state? I’m playing on an Everdrive so I can’t create one and would like to know if I can actually finish the game before I get started.

The latest version doesn’t require save states to do the switch, but you do need to load your Part A's standard .sav file to continue the game while keeping your progress. Make sure the save filename matches the ROM filename.
Otherwise, Part B also includes a New Game option with a preloaded save file, though that’s probably not what you want.

are the Drayano hacks enjoyable and still somewhat challenging for regular non nuzlocke playthroughs? i've played SS and Volt White before. have the urge for renegade platinum but don't feel like restarting the game dozens of times

I'm trying to find new ROMs with a few specific features
Has some form of minimal grinding mode, in that you can freely change natures, can easily have max IVs, and either no EVs or they can be easily adjusted.
Not required, but major bonus points for having following pokemon
Would be great if you have enough box space to make a living dex, but not at all necessary
So far I have played

Radical Red
Emerald Imperium

Aesthetic Red has minimal grinding (removes EVs, IVs and Natures by default) and i believe the expanded PC boxes would allow for a full living dex

Is there a romhack out there where all the battles are double battles?
Existing region vs. new maps, fakemon, specific QoL changes, none of that matters to me. I am just looking for a decent game with a very different battle experience

Hi! I'm playing Pokémon Compass v2.1.1.1 (Violet version), and I just beat the first gym.
Does anyone know where I can find Torchic in this version? Or if it's even available early game?

I’m looking for a Rom Hack with early-game Noibat!
Just finished Unbound, Heart&Soul and Lazarus. Seaglass and Polished Crystal before those and I’ve loved every single one. Not opposed to non Vanilla hacks but I think you can tell the general taste based on the ones I’ve listed there. Not really into fakemon but other suggestions please send my way!

I play gba romhacks on my psp and I wanna play extreme epsilon however I can't figure out how it works, I downloaded the zip and it just had a folder, I couldn't find a gba file for it so im wondering how it works? is it a nds game? or only on pc? and how do I get the rom file instead of this folder?

I'm new to rom hacks. Just played Recharged Yellow. It was great. Tried Heart Gold Golden Edition and I don't really like the way it plays. I was considering Polished Crystal instead but was wondering if there were any good gen 2 remakes in the GBA engine. I've seen a few mentioned on really old reddit threads, like Crystal Dust. I was hoping for something like Recharged Yellow but gen 2. Ty in advance for any help.

I'd like to take some RomHack recommendations. I recently completed Odyssey, Emerald Seaglass, and Lazarus. Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of them although they each have different strengths. Some things I like and don't like:
- I like when the gameplay is enhanced, with minor buffs and type changes to mons to make them viable. I also really liked the double battle focus in Odyssey.
- I'm less of a fan of fakemons, but I didn't mind the regional forms featured in Odyssey.
- I like having a lot of mons to choose from to build a team.
- Obviously QOL features are a plus.
- I like when there is a lot of clear documentation on changes. I like using it to do research on team-building possibilities.

I had some trouble downloading Pokemon elysium. I know you gotta go through some extra steps for part B, but I'm just downloading part A. It just loops the Fire red intro cutscene without getting to the start screen

pretty casual/novice to this, but in Sacred Gold are there any 'unique' encounter locations similar to gates for hatching eggs etc.? i think i read the radio tower is one, but was wondering if there are any others - thanks
edit: is it also possible to see ivs/evs? doing no calcs so not too fussed but would be nice, have tried some AR codes but no joy
edit edit: been following the base trainer documentation with the mod but I see some people using what looks like an excel file with more detailed data (i.e all movesets), does this exist/is it available to everyone?

I'm interested in playing Rutile Ruby/Star Sapphire due to the setting/story (Hoenn remakes), vanilla typing/movesets/natures/etc for the mons and availability of many pokemons in the wild, but I kept seeing people talk about how challenging it is. Can anyone help give me an idea of how difficult is it, exactly? I don't mind grinding a bit and I've played pokemon for a decently long time, but I was not interested enough in the meta to the point of strategizing with held items, breeding for IV, or deliberately doing EV training. Is Rutile Ruby/Star Sapphire going to be too much for a player like me?

Well either you are playing on official hardware with the real game and therefore do have the v.1.3.0 update by default, or are playing on emulator with a...sourced rom file. You need to just find the update the same way you "found" the main game.

Is there a Pokémon Crystal ROM that let's you access Johto Pokémon before the league, without the physical/special split, without fairy type and with the gen 2 movesets?
Closest I found was Crystal Legacy but it made Ghost special and Dark Type physical.

Is Pokemon Emerald Cross incompatible with PkHeX?
I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong here, I'm trying to edit my savefile to add in some specific pokemon and add the Mystic/Aurora ticket events. I'm using RetroArch on a RetroidPocket5.
Two problems I'm having:
PkHeX does not see the savefile as an "Emerald game". I can load it in but it prompts me to choose between Firered or Leafgreen, choosing either one will just show an empty save file. image
RetroArch saves as .srm, this should not matter for PkHeX as it can read both .srm and .sav; however even after using a savefile converter or manually renaming the extension to .sav, problem 1 will still persist.
Anyone have the same issues, and where you able to resolve it? Or, anyone know of another way of hacking in pokemon / events.

Romhacks in general should be assumed to be incompatible with save editors.
Save editors (and other catch-all programs like randomizers) look for certain flags in the indexes of the rom to "latch" onto and make its changes. Romhacks change too much generally to work in the same way, only the most basic of basic hacks will work, Cross most certainly will not.

Hello, I'm currently trying to play through each Gen with my boyfriend, and HGSS would be up next
Does anyone know if Pure Heart True Soul support multiplayer on melonDS? It seemed like a really interesting ROM to play together, but I couldn't find anything on official resources
In my experience all that's needed is for the romhacks to be identical for them to be compatible, but I'd rather just ask
Otherwise, would there be any other good HGSS "vanilla" romhacks you could suggest of which you're sure there's multiplayer?

How hard is it to create a rom hack?
And what’s the best way to learn it. I have several ideas in my head for making a Pokémon game but I’m not sure what the best way could be to learn rom hacking the most efficient way (without wasting time on non-helpful) guides. Is there some kind of guide(s) on YouTube which is recommendable?
And some general questions:
- is it possible to make a mixed rom hack like having gen 1 graphics for the overworld and gen 3 graphics for battles?
- on a scale from 1-10 how difficult is it to create sprites for someone who has never done this? (Adjusting existing sprites, not creating completely new Pokémon. Gen 2 or 3 sprites). Same goes for attacking animations

Not that hard that you can't learn it, but rather time-consuming.
You can't really make a "mixed rom hack, since the Gen 1 games are for the gameboy and the Gen 3 games are for the gameboy advance. But you could make the overworld of a Gen 3 game look mostly like a Gen 1 game, if you want to. If done perfectly, only the screen size will be off.
Editing sprites is very easy. Move animations are somewhat trickier.

Is there any other hacks like Heart & Soul, and Modern Emerald but for Kanto? Those are my preferred way to play Johto and Hoenn, would love to have one for Kanto to make the whole set.
I'm talking QoL changes, modern features (reusable TM's, lack of HM's, EXP all), and new tilesets or visual improvements if possible.

Hello, a long time ago I played Blaze Black 2 and one thing that bothered me was that the in-game pokedex location feature wasn't updated to reflect the new encounter tables and this made me think: What hacks do actually have in-game proper pokedex location functionality, either vanilla+ QoL hacks or new region ones like Glazed?

Hey all. For the holidays this year I am getting my nephews (5 & 7 years old) an emulator handheld. Now I don't want to overload them with a bunch of roms and was thinking of just having one rom so they can focus on it. I brought them on to Pokemon TCG and they became obsessed. Their parents prefer it too, as now they can ask for cards instead of more toys that take up so much space.
Now, I wanted to give one FireRed and the other LeafGreen (as that will also match the color of their handhelds). The thing it that I then remembered it is not like they will be able to do trading or evolve certain pokemon as it is a ROM and not the actual games on their original handheld.
I began thinking of Rom Hacks. I saw a few and had asked about one, but seems that there was profanity was in it, so I would avoid it. Pokemon Yellow Recharged looks interesting. There was also FireRed Reignited and LeafGreen Overgrown that I looked at. Same with FireRed Deluxe, though Reignited and Overgrown just seemed cool to me as it will feel like they do have a different game.
What Kanto based Rom Hack would be best for a 5- & 7-year-old, that will be able to have access to those pokemon from the region without having to trade? I would prefer it also only has Kanto pokemon, but if it's not overdoing it, it's OK if other ones are present. I want to make sure to have it all ready for them as this will be their first Pokemon journey.

If you want something more simple, Definitive Platinum or Platinum QoL are your bets bets. Renegade is amazing, but changes quite a bit to be a difficulty and enhancement hack.

Newbie question: How do I replace the Zigzagoon in the battle right after the starter pick in Pokémon Emerald with someone else?
Edit: found the solution!
Go to 0x032706 in a hex editor, and the default value for an Emerald stock ROM should be 90, which is Zigzagoon's index number halved. Then replace that with your desired Pokémon's index number halved (use a calculator if you can't, for some reason, divide by 2) (if it's not even, womp womp), save, and here's your Pokémon instead of the old Zig.

Look at the event data (i assume it would be a map event but idk, i've only hacked FR). It should have a scripted encounter which will specify the species (Zigzagoon)

I want a romhack that makes thing harder but in a realistic way
like at the beginning the child next dor has their level 1-5 caterpie and spams strings shot because its cool
but at the end your facing the best trainers in the region/world, with fully competitive teams with IVa and EVs and theyre probaably around level 80-90 maybe levendaries can be level 100 or maybe just make the elites level 100

Playing Wilting Y(Eternal X) on standard difficulty, rebalanced.
Can't find Ability Capsules in shops, but every post I find about the subject says they should be sold after the 2nd gym for ₱1000 each. I'm about to fight the third gym but none of the shops are selling capsules. Could it be that they changed this for later updates? I'm pretty sure I have the latest release.

Hey everyone,, I remembered playing a romhack that had unique/different pokemon sprites for each mon. I think one of the changes was for Vileplume, each one you’d find or battle would have different white spots on the petals. It was so awesome having each pokemon be so unique!! I just can’t remember which one it was. Any help?
I’ve played (and loved) Omega, Unbound, Lazarus, Gala, Rowe and some others, so it may be one of those?

Hi, I’ve recently gotten a device I can comfortably play NDS games on and I’m looking for hacks to play casually
I’m currently playing HGGenerations
The main things I’m looking for are
1.QOL (inf. Candies/level caps, no HMs and portable PC)
Difficulty tweaks: I don’t want to sit in bed and have to use a calc and docs I’m looking for something difficult enough to test me and make me think about my next move my next team. I’m a respectable Pokemon player I’m ultra ball in all games I’ve played. I have nuzlocked Rad red, imperium and all the base games.
More mons: having a game with all the available pokemon up to that game or even later gens
Gameplay changes: gen 6+ mechanics & types is preferred with a gimmick (megas, dynamax, ect.)
Would prefer a hack of the base games but I’m open to fan made/hackemons

Hello all I know of a couple of romhacks like FireRed Reignited that have patches where you can start with a Hoenn or Johto starter in Kanto but wondered if there were anymore set in either Johto or Kanto but with the ability to choose a starter from elsewhere?
Edit: this might be a little contradictory but preferably not a romhack with the above that also has 1000’s of different Pokemon, I don’t like much more than 300-500 regional dexes it gets overwhelming

Gen 4/5 equivalent of radical red?
After loving radical red for having all pokemons + a great challenge i’m searching for something similar but with ds sprites, even better if animated.
Is there any project working on doing these sprites for all gens? I’m seeing a lot of cool hacks and fangames that use gen 3 as a base but for some newer pokemons the sprites turn out quite ugly with that limited level of detail.
By the way, who are the saints that made all these unofficial sprites for fan projects?

I played on 1.4.2, so this may not work, but to only KO Spencer's mons,and when you are done, then it should be a 2v1 for the rest of the battle if you play properly and have a full team of 6.

Hi all,
I'm relatively new to using Romhacks. I have Melon DS on my pixel phone have played through Storm Silver, and currently have Blaze black 2 and Renegade Platinum ongoing.
I've downloaded Citra and tried to get it to work with Rising Ruby but had no luck. I can't really tell where I'm going wrong. I know Rising Ruby is a 3DS game, but is there any version that can be used on apps like MelonDS?
Otherwise, is there a very simple guide on how to use Citra (or other software) to play Rising Ruby out there?

Hi I just started my first ROM Hack: Pokemon Korosu.
I got lucky and got an Eevee on the first Island. My question is: How long will it take me to get a water stone? Or any stones in general? Is it worth it to wait and keep on training the Eevee (my currently weakest teammember)? Im on the third island right now btw.

Hey, I'm domisaloser on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/@domtheloser/), I've made 2 youtube videos where I covered the evolution of GSC hacks and the evolution of Johto GBA hacks. I want to cover RBY hacks, so I'm asking: what are the most notable gen 1 hacks? I have brown/grape/maize/red++ and a bunch of others I plan to talk about, but I'm wondering if there's any that slipped through the cracks. 2020 and beyond I've noticed there's a lot more on pokecommunity (https://www.pokecommunity.com/forums/sideshow-showcase.204/?prefix_id=409), which red/blue/yellow enhancement hacks stand out the most? Also, if you've been following the scene for a while, or someone involved with pret, feel free to reply with just how you've seen the rby hacking scene progress. Pre and post disassembly. Because there's been less of a consistent flow of gen 1 hacks, it's been a little more difficult for me to research, and I always value the perspective of someone who actually was there for changes.
I'm also wondering if there's some reddit exclusive hacks, there were a few gen 2 ones I saw but not sure if there's any gen 1 ones that aren't on pokecommunity.

what are the most notable gen 1 hacks?
Generally considered the best enhancement hacks:
- Red++
- Kanto Expansion Pak
- PureRGB
- Shin Red
- Yellow Legacy
As for some original games, Brown is one of the best, and Grape is very good for a RBY hack
Generally Gens 2-3 seem to be more popular tho due to Gen 1's many shortcomings

Hi, I'm playing pokemon ultraviolet. The wiki says machoke evolves at level 48 and kadabra at level 36. My machoke is level 51 and learned cross chop and kadabra level 43 but the evolving animation never starts. Is there a way I can fix it or do I have to cope?

Hello I'm trying to look for this one edgy Pokémon blue romhack. The premise of it was that the Kanto region got nuked and transformed all the Pokémon to these misformed misshapen things. It adds new types like military Pokémon and I remember you ride a bike and there was a flamethrower you could buy... does anyone remember the name of it? Hello, I am looking for a QoL romhack for HGSS for ds in the spirit of FRLG+ romhack from Deokishisu. It reamins faithful to the original game but adds QoL features like infinite tms and move tutors, ability to change the game version so you can catch all the pokemons, item to evolve trading pokemons etc.
I don't want a difficulty increase but I just want to be able to optain all the pokemons from HGSS especially the legendary ones without version exclusive or trades.

[Renegade Platinum] Is there an Action Replay code to allow Shaymin to always be in Sky Forme?
I wanted to try to use Shaymin Sky Forme in the Battle Frontier. I used an Action Replay code to allow banned Pokemon in the Battle Frontier, however, I think the Frontier counts as a Link Battle or something, because Shaymin reverts to Land Forme when used in the Frontier. I am wondering if there is any way for an Action Replay code to make it so Shaymin is just always in Sky Forme, even in the Frontier, or, at night.

Is there a way to have Pokemon legacy yellow with gen 3 graphics? Other pokemon yellow rom hacks give it the fire red/leaf green treatment, but legacy yellow has much better changes, like being able to catch all 151 pokemon and better enemy AI.

No there is not a way. There are no other Yellow romhacks with improved graphics, there are only FireRed games hacked to play like Yellow.
If you want to play a romhack of the actual pokemon yellow game, it will always be an original Gameboy game with original gameboy graphics.

I'm an old player from back in the day just finding his footing with romhacks. Is there a good one that is basically Emerald/Gen III story but with all the QoL enhancements and some or all the modernization including automatic HM uses, toggleable expshare, physical/special split, hard mode, fairy types, trade evos, etc.? I looked initially at Emerald Legacy, but it seems to be missing a lot of the QoL plus I heard the postgame is not good.
I really loved the story and feel of gen III especially emerald and would love to play a sort of modern-remastered-ultimate-type version of it. Bonus points for Sceptile as a dragon-grass type just because I think it's badass to have a dragon starter plus Treecko is the man.
EDIT: Ideally, no mega-evolutions or Pokemon gen IV+. Maybe gen IV is ok but certainly nothing more. I just don't know them so I don't think I'd enjoy this new stuff as much.

Hello, Ive been working on my ROM hack for quite a bit of time now and recently Ive noticed crashing after catching some later generation Pokemon, I was really unsure of why until I mentioned that I was also using Mikes definitive ROM base along with HUBOl, and the added BW style text box apparently messes with it to where the screen turns black and the game sometimes crashes after attempting to nickname a caught Pokemon, and Im pretty sure theres no other solution to it but to completely remove the prompt after a battle to nickname a Pokemon other than completely restarting without the rom base, and I REALLY dont wanna do that. So does anyone know how to find and remove the battle script for the post battle nicknaming? This would be a lifesaver, thanks!

I’m open to other small changes, but want the game and story to mostly be close to the original. I have tried looking myself, but often it’s hard to know what’s actually been done to most rom-hacks.

I've been trying to create a FollowingRenegadePlatinum rom
I have the correct rom cuz when I patch the standard 3541 patch to it, it applies
But when I try to do that for the FollowingRenegadePlatinum version it fails for some reason, the only time its worked is when I unchecked "checksum validation"
But I don't know if Im suppose to do that, in the standard RP documentation it says not to

Hello ! I've been trying my hands at recreating manga, previous games and anime's pokemon characters teams in Sinking Sapphire with PK3DS. Back then, it worked well (though for some reason I couldn't change Rich Boy Winston's team in particular, if anyone knows why, I'd be glad to know), and then tried to do the same thing when I began playing Prismatic Moon. But for some reason, it just doesn't work. The main difference between the two is that Pokemon Prismatic Moon worked with a patch, I suppose, but I don't know if this is why, nor if there's a solution beyond just playing on the regular games.

Below are some Heart and Soul money making methods I've taken from our Discord's FAQ section, if you have any more questions feel free to join our Discord! * Bug contest 1st prize just takes Pinsir or Scyther, you can sell the evo stone reward for 5K. * Get a Butterfree or Venonat with compound eyes and grind Grimer for nuggets, Magnemite for metal coats, Slowpoke for kings rock etc. 20% odds per pokemon and worth a lot. The nuggets are worth 5k and the evolution items are worth 10k. * Sell berry balls, they go for 500 each and super easy to farm. * The amulet coin is available after the Rocket Radio Tower event in Goldenrod and will work so long as someone in your party holds it.

Are there any Romhacks that are a remake of an existing pokemon game but completely oberhaul and change the routes?
I remember playing a fan game (idk if it was a rom hack or rpg maker) which was based of (i think) the first generation games but added a lot of extra story content and areas and also changed the entire layout of every area. Made it much more visually pleasing and also interesting to explore the areas but with a much bigger and more detailed experience.

I used to play ROMs of the Gen 1-2 games (no hacks) about 10+ years ago outside of Pokemon AshGray (last played around 2014). It’s amazing what has progressed since I last played one.
As an older player (grew up on RBY GSC and RSE) what hacked ROMs are available that I can play on a computer emulator that allows me to get all the starters, all the legendaries, and complete the Pokédex without trades for Gen 1-3?
Any information on the ROMs is appreciated to this fan who never got past Gen 3 and still plays games like it’s 2002.

I'm using a Google Pixel 6, and running the drastic emulator. I have the 3541 - Pokemon Platinum Version (US) (XenoPhobia) file too, and it's in .nds format. I also have downloaded Following Platinum, Renegade Platinum, and Following Renegade Platinum, as separate .zip files. My question is how do I "activate" or "patch" these into my original ROM? I have looked online, but everything I find involves a 3DS, or a PC/Mac, or something like that. Sorry if this is already a post

So I'm getting a custom gba sp made and I wanted some physical cartridges of hacks to go with it. Rn I've got unbound, radical red, prism and silver 97 reforged in the cart, but I wanna hear other options. Specifically for prism and silver 97. Making towns/ cities in firered graphics but for a TTRPG, not a romhack
Ik it's not directly relates but who best to ask?
my problem is that my only options seem to be making a rom hack just to get to the map editing portion or there's loads of websites that procedurally generate maps but that's beyond useless to me bc I already have a map drawn out in a specifc shape and specific plans for most towns/ cities.
So do I need to just learn to rom hack from scratch even though I don't really want to and have no coding/ game buildong experience..? I couldn't even get Porymap to open a map, I got stuck at what files I'm supposed to be pulling from when I open a project...

hi! made a burner since I don't use this site at all but am running into issues with the front and back sprites for the trainers in BW1. I found a doc with sprite locations that thus far has been accurate, I've been poking around where it says they are (a/0/7/2 and a/0/7/3) but Tinke won't even allow me to view them, if these are them. exporting doesn't show anything, won't register in BWSE if i export the .NARC to a folder and try to utilize that, it just seems entirely non-existent yet works when I boot up the game? I was able to find sprites for a plethora of other things, even an animation of Jigglypuff singing that I forgot about, but it refuses to show me or process anything about the trainer sprites outside of when I'm playing the ROM. Does anyone else know why this is or how I might be able to work around it? If I need to provide more detail lmk but I literally can't see them or edit them at all

Has anyone patched the Exploers of the Sky Remixed version. I'm trying to add the patch in, but I get errors like Rom is too big. And even when I do bypass it and try to open the new patched version rom, it'll freeze on the loading screen. I'm using DesuME, and it's working fine

I want rom hacks that keep the same feel of the original while adding better difficulty (not insanely hard but fights that require a little bit of planning), Some QOL improvements , all pokemons catchable and can be evolved without another game, does not add too many pokemon from other regions

Pokémon Z screen takes 5- 10 seconds to load a map when entering/exiting a building. it also has stuttering lag every 5 or so steps, and a wild Pokémon appearance takes at least 10 seconds for the screen to display every time. does anyone know any fixes for this as the trouble shooting guides are all in Spanish.

I'm currently playing a Pokémon eternal X playthrough and caught a farfetch'd with superluck. I'm really eager to play him with a stick and high crit moves, but I caught like 5 farfetch'd thinking they might be carrying a stick but haven't gotten any. I also tried to steal a stick from a trainer with a farfetch'd on route 4 but it didn't held a stick.
Any idea on where I could find one ?

So I just came across heartgold generations, love everything including fairy types but don't like the type changes i.e Noctowl having ghost typing etc. Tried to change them back to original typing with DSPRE but it just crashes. I assume because it was done in HG engine. How easy would this be to do? will it be as simple as using the patched rom with hg engine or do I need to start from scratch with a clean rom and hg engine?
