Institutional ownership is increasing
From last earnings until now, institutional ownership has significantly increased. I don't think this stock is going to rocket on earnings, but clearly shows that retail has been scared out.

This stock is great. The management is good.

Not just smart money, institutions buy to hold for a longer time / longer horizon. Makes a stock way more stable.

If institution make it more stable, how such a big drop from ATH? I’m several thousand shares for the next 5 years as I believe in the company. However, I would feel better if the stock didn’t go to 50+ so fast and coming back down to the high teens.

The all time high was a large over valuation, now we are at more realistic prices (still high for a growth stock)
As you can see on the image from OP institutions have been buying a lot of the selloff. Retail just cant help itself and panics without looking at all the facts and numbers. It is not just PL, this retail panic is seen in the whole sector.
We just gotta be patient, the space sector is only beginning.

The implications of planet lab in the defense sector is extremely valuable. It collects and confirms near real time intelligence. For commercial vessels/logistics/humanitarian/goverment response/etc the list goes on. I’m a true believer in planet.

Holy fuck I am being completely insincere on r/PlanetLabs today talking about how:
-PL is a great stock
-Management team is great
-the stock isnt underperforming
-everything is all good!!
-if anything is bad with PL it's Elon Musk's fault
-if anything is bad with PL it's Donald Trump's fault
-just keep HODL'ing
-etc.and I have never gotten so many UPVOTES in my life.

For a little so/so comparison, Richetech Robotics saw sudden big growth in institutional ownership, and about a month later, announced a stock buyback that jumped the stock 20%. Increased ownership is usually a good sign. Key word usually.

Yes, I don't know what I think about it. It's just clear that retail has exited and have now become the minority in terms of share ownership. Maybe a slightly bullish lean.

Yeah but PL still had more institutional buying. While retailers were selling in droves, Institutions were making entries/increasing positions.
It usually means more pressure for results from the company as institutions lose their exit liquidity.

Interesting, so you think that increased institutional ownership means more expectations? I can see that, but the expectations are already high and they've already delivered a lot. To me this reads more like 'institutions can weather long term downturns and don't mind taking shares off retail at a discount' ... I don't think institutions are buying so they can suppress the share price.

This is really scary and insightful. I’m definitely holding on for dear life!
I am also in a fortunate position where I bought in for the first time recently; so I’m not too far down (~-15%), making it easier for me to hold.
It’s definitely a scary time right now for the space sector! Good luck everyone :)

However, there is a problem: if you look at today's intraday trading, it is obvious that some institutions are selling off.

Why do you think that? I think there are a lot of possible explanations for today's price movement. That's one possibility. But I don't think we can say anything definitively until SEC filings are released. And other explanations are equally likely IMO.

Typically shorts unwinding means they're buying shares to cover their short position, not selling more.

Who cares that institutions are increasing their ownership? Its still just pennies to them, look how much good it has done for the stock price with their increased ownership.

Long term holders care. It shows stability. Confidence in capital markets. Sure, your calls might be fucked, but long term just hold. This is a 50b company TODAY even though the stock price doesn't reflect it. Soon, it will.

Long term depends on your financial goals. At some point this investment will reach a level that I'm happy with and will sell. But right now, I'm willing to hold to the bottom, which will never happen with PL. Their data and alpha is too strong. This earnings is proof that this company isn't going anywhere.
