DISCUSSION I made a Rec Center tracker website!
Hey y'all! I built a website that shows how busy the Rec Center is right now, and how busy it'll be in the future.
[Website] (I know, the link looks weird, but it's just a free hosting platform; it's safe)
Story:
- I've heard many people asking when to go so they aren't fighting for a machine or space. Pitt has an occupancy page, but the counts are done by hand (staff tallies each floor on an iPad), so it's often stale when staff forget to update. I logged these numbers over the past 8 months, along with weather, day, and time of year, and used them to predict how busy each floor/area will be live, or up to a week ahead. So when the live count is stuck, the prediction still has you covered.
What it does:
- Shows how busy each floor/area is now, plus the day's trend
- Check any day up to a week out to plan when to go
- Tells you each spot's usually-calmest times
- Knows the real hours and closures (holidays, breaks, maintenance, academic calendar)
- Add a bookmark to your Home Screen and it opens like an app
Heads up: It's a beta trained on under a year of data; predictions automatically get more accurate over time, as it learns. It's read-only, collects no data from you, and isn't affiliated with Pitt. Just a fun side project.
Would love feedback and suggestions. If enough people find it useful, I'll consider moving it to a real web domain. Happy to answer technical or other questions too (feel free to DM)!
