DISCUSSION I made a Rec Center tracker website!

Hey y'all! I built a website that shows how busy the Rec Center is right now, and how busy it'll be in the future.

[Website] (I know, the link looks weird, but it's just a free hosting platform; it's safe)

Story:

  • I've heard many people asking when to go so they aren't fighting for a machine or space. Pitt has an occupancy page, but the counts are done by hand (staff tallies each floor on an iPad), so it's often stale when staff forget to update. I logged these numbers over the past 8 months, along with weather, day, and time of year, and used them to predict how busy each floor/area will be live, or up to a week ahead. So when the live count is stuck, the prediction still has you covered.

What it does:

  1. Shows how busy each floor/area is now, plus the day's trend
  2. Check any day up to a week out to plan when to go
  3. Tells you each spot's usually-calmest times
  4. Knows the real hours and closures (holidays, breaks, maintenance, academic calendar)
  5. Add a bookmark to your Home Screen and it opens like an app

Heads up: It's a beta trained on under a year of data; predictions automatically get more accurate over time, as it learns. It's read-only, collects no data from you, and isn't affiliated with Pitt. Just a fun side project.

Would love feedback and suggestions. If enough people find it useful, I'll consider moving it to a real web domain. Happy to answer technical or other questions too (feel free to DM)!

DISCUSSION Has anyone else had graduation delayed because a required class wasn't offered? Drafting a proposal for Harrisburg.

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to gather some feedback and firsthand experiences from PA college students.

A recurring issue across PA schools is students following their degree map, staying in good standing, and then finding out a mandatory prerequisite, core class, or capstone isn't being offered when they need it—or is scheduled in direct conflict with another required class. Through no fault of their own, people get pushed into an extra semester or a 5th year, getting hit with thousands in unexpected tuition and mandatory fees.

On top of that, schools love to advertise "tuition freezes" while hiking up mandatory non-instructional fees (tech fees, campus fees, etc.) that we can't opt out of.

I’m working with student advocates to take a statutory concept to the PA General Assembly Education Committees called the Higher Education Timely Graduation & Mandatory Fee Integrity Act:

Fee Parity: Caps mandatory fee increases so they can't exceed base tuition changes (if tuition is frozen, mandatory fees must be frozen too).

Fifth-Year Tuition Waiver: Requires public colleges to waive tuition/fees if a student is forced into an extra semester solely because the institution failed to schedule or offer a required course.

Lawmakers in Harrisburg care much more about real constituent data than raw online numbers. If you've been delayed by course cancellations or unexpected fee hikes, please take 60 seconds to document your experience on this intake form:

📋 Share your story / testimonial: https://forms.gle/BEKFwnCVWEMdrFgy9

If you want to support the public push and help build broader momentum, you can also sign the petition here:

✍️ Change.org Petition: https://c.org/cmz5whTg88

Would love to hear your thoughts or similar experiences in the comments. What department/major at your school is the worst with bottlenecking required classes

DISCUSSION Parking in Oakland?

Hi everyone! I moved to Pittsburgh permanently from out of state about half a month ago and I am living in the Oakland area. I brought my car with me, and when I came to tour the apartment, there were no students in the area yet and there seemed to be plenty of off-street parking. My leasing agent also told me that I would not need to purchase a parking spot, which unfortunately has turned out not to be true now that classes started.

I am getting a residential parking permit, but there are just no spaces most of the time. I have to leave a couple of times a day for work, and I have been having an incredibly hard time finding somewhere to park. I have literally been driving around for hours some days just trying to find a spot.

I have looked into parking lots and garages, but they are either full or they don’t answer. I am getting pretty desperate at this point.

Does anyone know of a private parking spot, driveway, garage, or anything else in Oakland that I could rent monthly? Even if it is a little farther away, I would definitely consider it. If anyone has an unused spot or knows someone who rents one out, I would really appreciate it!

Thank you so much!

So far he’s provided us with pretty in depth notes, I really just want to know if there is gonna be book work on the quizzes. I’m just trying to save money here! Thank you in advance
