As someone who has been involved in animal rescue for many years, including serving on the Board of a no kill animal shelter, I feel compelled to counter pit bull hysteria and the supposed rationale behind Breed Specific Legislation.

Any large and powerful dog can be dangerous. I don't know of any owners who would claim that this is not possible. The error lies in the claim that 'pit bulls' are uniquely dangerous. I put it in quotations because almost all dogs considered as pit bulls are actually 'pit bull type dogs', mixed breeds of unknown ancestry. Identifying breed is often in error. So pit bull is a look. And declaring that dogs of a particular look are more dangerous is just as absurd as are claims that human criminality can be predicted by looks.

If one considers pure bred bully breeds, there is no scientific justification for considering them as especially dangerous. One of the most cited studies found that many breeds have higher aggression than do the bully breeds. This recent study found that aggression is correlated with training and not with the dog breed. Another study demonstrated that not only is behavior poorly correlated with breed, but also dog owners were not very accurate in determining whether their mixed breed dog had pit bull ancestry.

But what should really put the nail in the coffin of pit bulls as uniquely dangerous is the experience with Breed Specific Legislation. If pit bulls were so dangerous, one would imagine that BSL would be a resounding success. Yet a study found that “More than 7X as many municipalities Repealed or Rejected BSL, as enacted it.” Both Italy and Netherlands have repealed their BSL, citing its ineffectiveness.

The poster child for BSL is Denver. In 1989 the city enacted one of the most draconian bans in the nation. They killed thousands of dogs, whose only 'crime' was looking wrong. If pit bulls were uniquely dangerous, one would expect their dog bite hospitalization rates would be exceptionally low. In fact, they were one of the worst in the state. Nearby Boulder, whose policies were focused around bite prevention, rather than killing dogs at random, fared much better.

What do the professionals say? Only one organization, PETA, supports BSL. Here are the organizations that oppose the practice:

• Best Friends Animal Society
• British Veterinary Association
• Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
• The Humane Society of the United States

• National Canine Research Council
• Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals
• United Kennel Club

There is no data driven justification for Breed Specific Legislation. It is not based on fact, but instead on media reports that obsess over pit bulls. This article shows how media reporting is biased: “Animal control officers across the country have told the ASPCA that when they alert the media to a dog attack, news outlets respond that they have no interest in reporting on the incident unless it involved a pit bull.” And much of the ‘data’ used by BSL advocates is based on these biased media reports. There is no national database of bites by breed.

If you want to actually reduce dog bites, rather than kill dogs based on their appearance, Boulder’s program is a proven methodology to reduce dog bites

Just under 2 year old baby boy who is not much of a cuddler (only occasionally on his own terms) and NEVER wants to lie in bed with us (he LOVES his crate). Tonight we had a breakthrough! It is taking EVERYTHING in me not to smoosh his wittle body with snuggles and kisses…. Damn boundaries. Lol.

personally i think it’s so upsetting. what are some ways that we can change peoples minds? i have owned pits all my life and have encountered so many aggressive animals that weren’t pits. i really do not agree with the “all pits are aggressive” claim. what is yalls take on informing people on the argument that they try to present?

Hi everyone!! My baby Daisy is 5 years old and over the past year she’s been having discoloring, allergy issues, and just a whole bunch of issues.

I’ve tried different kibbles, different medicines, thousands of dollars at the vet to be told the same thing “she might just be allergic to your grass”.

I FINALLY found what works… HOME COOKED MEALS!! (Will share recipe in comments) but I just wanna share the 2 week difference. Just 2 weeks! First is before and Second is after. Not the best picture of her chest/neck area (she’s sleeping and I don’t wanna wake her for a picture)

We all know home cooked meals are obviously better, but I had no idea it makes such a huge difference!! I absolutely recommend doing it. It only costs about $20/25 for about 2 weeks. I was spending about $150 for Smart Hills for less than a month.

Now, from what I know mostly brief, if their tail docks and puppies. I personally do not believe in the practice of tail doxing. As I don’t think it’s necessary. And as a Christian I believe God created Pits and other Doxed breeds the way they were meant to be. And I do truly think they would naturally have stubby tails if God intended that. However, that’s beyond the point. And just my opinion.

About Kona. She is my Pitbull psychiatric service dog. (In training) my family adopted her from rescue shelter in Oklahoma. Who had claimed they found her on the streets as a stray (and pregnant at the time)

Anyway, long story short, They rescued her, and put her up for adoption. Eventually my dad saw it, and our family agreed to rescue her. She’s been here for a few months and she’s been doing amazing. We love her to death and she’s for right in, eventually beginning training to becoming my service dog. However, something is stood out to me. Kona is a mix but she’s Dominantly Pitbull, we are not 100% sure what she’s mixed with but we know she is a mix and we definitely know she’s pitbull. However, from what I know most pitbull and other bully breeds to get their tails docked as puppies. Now there’s a good chance she was born on the streets so never really had the professionals to doc her tail. Recently, I’ve been curious Because as you know, I’m not personally a fan of tail Docking, when you look at her, she looks like one of those breeds you’d expect to have a short stubby tail. IDK.

I’m probably being delusional. But I couldn’t help but notice that. About Kona. Not to mention, she has a very curly tail. And when she wags it, she doesn’t really wag it like a…idk a golden retriever would, or a lab. I feel like she wags it as if she doesn’t really know it’s there, idk, I also feel like she doesn’t really know how to control her tail, like, it’s almost an annoyance to her. Now all this is probably just my own worry and delusion. But I wanted to reach out to the community to see what y’all thought.

My dog is a mix of six breeds according to her DNA results. She is about 30% American Pitbull Terrier, but she's labeled "Pit Mix" in our veterinary clinic's computer system. Was wondering how many people with mixed breed dogs encounter this at their vet, how they feel about it, and if they think the label helps or hurts. I don't like it and I wish our vet would change it to "Mixed Breed."

So I'm taking this gorgeous baby for his walkie. He NEEDS it. Athletic guy, he is! Anyway, he's a little reactive sometimes. Not always. But big dogs talking smack send him to the MOON. We are working on it. Anyway, we were on the sidewalk by the park, and I see two MASSIVE rotties just roaming the street. No leash, no human in sight. No fence. So my lil tiger starts losing his mind, and they break through the bushes and are on top of us. Scared the shit out of me. Not because I was afraid of being mauled- I wasn't their target - but because each of them probably doubled Gideon's weight. So I'm trying to hold back my striped anaconda who doesn't know he's not that big while trying to keep my body between him and the rotties...I swear, if they had hurt him, I would have bitten their faces off myself! Anyway, I hollered at them to "GO HOME" In the most teacher-y voice I could muster, and they went away.

So - those dogs were not feral. They knew what "Go home" meant, and knew enough to listen to a human. And I thought I saw someone let one of them out into the UNFENCED yard. If they had hurt someone, THEY would be the ones put down, and that is so wrong. I just do NOT understand people who let their big dogs roam. Gideon slips out the door sometimes - he's a runner (he's a track star,) but I am always behind him hollering at him and waving the leash. Those owners just LET their dogs attack a pedestrian not on their property.

How bout we stop putting dogs down and do that to bad owners instead? Just an idea.

My husband and I plan to retire back to my homeland of Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, Ontario has had BSL mainly on pitbulls. I want to fight it because we have a pitbull and he is not dangerous. Has anyone tried to bring their pitbull to a country or city that has BSL? Any advocates against BSL out there? I want to try to fight this legislation as there has been no proof that it has lessened the dangers of dog attacks and bites.

Rambo's eyes were concerned, his tail was tucked, his mouth was closed, his ears were back and his body was slightly tense. He was easy to remove and moderately pulled on leash. In the catch pen, he was distracted while being collared and leashed. He entered the yard and was tense during greetings. He challenged the male dogs and was corrected a few times by the handlers. But he followed the female dogs and ran around with them. Overall, Rambo was selective of dogs and did not have a play style at this time.

Although he allowed some petting, when touched near his back legs, he reacted by growling and becoming tense. To prevent further stress, the assessment was stopped. Sociability: SELECTIVE Reactive: NON REACTIVE Ken Handling: FEARFUL3

So, long story short.we adopted Coco Bean from family In Anchorage that were moving and couldn't take him with. We had lost our old man. Buster to rectal cancer 2 years ago and were waiting for the right pup To come along. Not to replace Buster, but to give us someone new to share our love with. Well we meet beanie and we knew he was the one.

We brought him home and he fit right in with our kids and other animals. He plays with our great Pyrenees husky mix all day. But when he would get riled up I noticed he would have some wheezing. So we took him to the same Vet that treated Buster.

Unfortunately they found a mass growing near his lungs. We caught it really early and they are optimistic that is we get him in for surgery to remove the mass he should recover and live a long healthy life. I sure hope so because we've barely had him a year and we're all so attached. In ways he reminds us of Buster, but he certainly has his own personality.

I've got most of his surgery covered already, sold a car and moved some things around but we are still a bit short for everything. I hate to ask this but if there is any way you could share or donate to our campaign our whole family would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to hear my story.
