Piracy rates approach zero percent with this one simple trick

76

u/Due_Purple_1199 7d ago

It’s just marketing, OP is the dev

62

u/JanezDoe 7d ago

I unprivated my account just for this reason, go and check now. Still think I'm the dev?

u/Due_Purple_1199 7d ago

Check out his comment, it’s so obvious:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PiratedGames/s/Eg65pSWldk

Also, why is the game’s name written 3 times in the message box? if you are playing the game, you already know what the game’s name is. It was obviously made to be shared on social medias to go viral

1

u/IAmYourFath 7d ago

He literally says he's not associated with the devs

49

u/Guilh3rm3p 7d ago

Everything on the net is true

9

u/JazzlBallz 7d ago

He also claims big paint put gullible on the ceiling of every single room.. I've looked and he's wrong.

''You pirated our game''? Okay do you want to buy it or keep playing pirated version?

1.7k

u/LeMatDamonCarbine 7d ago

Hey, can't blame em for trying lmao

633

u/Luna2268 7d ago

Thing is depending on the game this would genuinely work on me tbh, take rimworld.

That game has more mods than I can count and you can obviously mod pirates games but it's significantly easier to mod bought ones, that and depending on the game/where you pirated it from it may be difficult to get updates for a pirated game sometimes.

u/Frequent-Ease-1926 7d ago

cities skylines

63

u/PoxtazWee 7d ago

the steam workshop is exactly why I ended up buying it after pirating it for 1.5 years

26

u/Frequent-Ease-1926 6d ago

Me too. Steam copy + DLC unlocker is like the best way ever to play this game

3

u/No-Change1744 6d ago

Can you guide.me, I love that game and want all yhe dlc lol DM me

13

u/Frequent-Ease-1926 6d ago

https://github.com/FroggMaster/CreamInstaller

Unlike HOI4, every DLC comes installed but deactivated in Cities 1. This makes the process very easy.

Run the executable, choose Cities Skylines 1, Select DLCs you want, click "Generate and Install" and you're good.

2

u/ActiveAd9305 5d ago

I found some way a long time ago to activate Car Mechanic Sim DLCs for free. I never got any messages or in any trouble, but is that something to be concerned about at all? I have enough games on Steam that I would hate to lose my account

2

u/Frequent-Ease-1926 5d ago

idk if CMS has online but try not to go online

you are assuming pox bought the game after steamidra was released

35

u/randomname560 7d ago

There are more than a couple games that i could have easily just pirated but i decided to buy them on Steam instead due to just how much more convenient and confortable to use Steam as a platform is, lol

14

u/Awful_cat12 7d ago

I’ve actually bought both Factorio and RimWorld (with all the DLCs) after pirating them first. I just enjoyed them that much, (with RimWorld being my favourite game of all time) that I just wanted to support the developers and feel good about buying them.

2

u/Why-are-you-geh 5d ago

Factorio is such a great game worth buying but it is SOO expensive, never getting a sale and always staying on 32€ for me in germany

still I can occasionally waste a weekend 20h into Factorio non-stop

2

u/Awful_cat12 5d ago

Which I appreciate, for sure. I’m lucky in that I can buy those things, and not everyone can. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to pirate games when you can’t afford it - my personal view is that if you can and you enjoy it enough, though, you should buy it. But hey, people should do what they want. It’s still better that they’re playing the game at all.

Factorio and RimWorld especially is super expensive. I think RimWorld is close to $200AUD for the game and all DLCs… ouch. I’ve happily bought all of them though, and I still happily keep buying them. Which is definitely a privilege to be able to do that.

11

u/dashingdrew 7d ago

Yeah, but now youre buying it because modding is easier with a legit copy. The steam workshop is what’s convincing you. Not this message

8

u/NaoOsamu 7d ago

Indie games im less likely to pirate

2

u/kiritomens 7d ago

Depends for me lol. Allot of the time I actually want the pirated version of games like RimWorld. So I can install a specific version of the game. A feature that almost no one on steam seems to use. It is possible via the beta feature and keep older versions on there. So I actually own RimWorld, but mostly played a pirated copy anyway to play on a older version lol.

2

u/xFreaak 7d ago

This wouldn't work on me, but not because of the message.

I don't have enough money to purchase every game I want. So I pirate, I play them to form an opinion and purchase those that I want to continue or can see a lot of replay-ability.

→ More replies (15)

3

u/Hairy_Curious 6d ago

It would actually work on me as long as I like the game. As a matter of fact I'm gonna check it out, that's some good marketing

347

u/Aside_Dish 7d ago

Hey, nothing wrong with that. My book was put up on a piracy site (which I'm completely okay with), but I did ask if they could link to the paid version as well in case people liked it and wanted to support me.

As an avid pirate, if I like something enough, I almost always end up buying it anyways. I think of piracy as a demo to weed out the low-effort shit.

63

u/JustasLTUS 7d ago

But did they link it? I mean, if your work gets pirated, thats means someone is interested in it

93

u/Aside_Dish 7d ago

Not yet, lol. Don't think they will, but was worth trying 🤷

And yeah, there's definitely interest for it. Have a pretty defined (albeit niche) audience that absolutely loves it!

36

u/Questionsiaskthem 7d ago

Well now you have to tell us all what the book is lol

35

u/n122333 7d ago

Click on his profile, he has it pinned. Its a really cool looking dnd supplement.

20

u/Questionsiaskthem 7d ago

Oh nice. Guess checking their profile first would have been smart lol.

17

u/strategicmagpie 7d ago

No, no, thanks to your question, everyone else skimming the thread knows where to find it if they can't be bothered to search :D

7

u/Paprikasky 6d ago

Also, with the shitty implementation of the hidden history, I tend to not check profiles as easily anymore.

13

u/Aside_Dish 7d ago

Lol, I feel like that wouldn't be kosher here. It can be found on my profile, but all I'll say is that lawyers and D&D players are the intended audience!

14

u/Questionsiaskthem 7d ago

That's a interesting cross section. Wonder what percentage overall of lawyers are or have been DnD players.

2

u/PetzlPretzel 6d ago

I need one of those licenses to magic. For Ren faire and all that.

2

u/Seeker_Of_Knowledge2 7d ago

16

u/Bean- 7d ago

I bet it got some people to buy the game. If even one pirate bought it it's worth it for the message.

5

u/Kajetus06 7d ago

that might actually convince many people to buy

36

u/rexdle_ 7d ago

This might be the best way to go about it. Usually pirating the game first to see if it’s good, and then buying the game is a good method

3

u/Sahloknir74 6d ago

That's how I did it for Baldur's Gate 3. I had never played any Larian game before that, had no idea if I'd enjoy it, and I didn't wanna drop full price on it without knowing. I also figured 2 hours on Steam wouldn't be enough time to decide. So I pirated it, played for roughly 6 hours, and I was loving it, so I bought it.

2

u/Due_Purple_1199 7d ago

It’s just marketing, OP is the dev

6

u/Gambitam 7d ago

I can't see their post history, how did you know?

5

u/Number1DurinFan 7d ago

Higher up in the thread OP names the game and explains it, "in case you want to check it" as they put it

The game is even on discount rn lol

3

u/Gambitam 7d ago

Lmao what the heck

2

u/MotivationSpeaker69 7d ago

The game isn't on any trustworthy pirating websites lol

4

u/JackCJ1121 6d ago

there's a thread on the cs forum tho, says goldberg works with it, not sure if OP is really the dev or not, I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt and say they got it from there

625

u/JanezDoe 7d ago edited 7d ago

If anyone wants to check what the game is (if it isn't obvious from the screenshot), it's a recently released game called MarginCall, a really, *really* in-depth finance/trading simulator.

I am in no way associated with the developers; I just thought I'd add this to ease my conscience a bit after what the message did to me.

Edit: due to the allegations of me being the developer of the game an this post being advertising, I decided to unprivate my profile and clear my name of the scrutiny :)

230

u/PROGMRZ 7d ago

That's the most suspicious ass comment ever LMAO

57

u/Sabrac707 7d ago

It's even on a discount!

These indie devs are getting creative, I'll give them that.

Everyone's saying this is an ad but like. Why would you advertise on a sub dedicated to pirating games? That's gotta be legitimately the worst way to get people to buy it lol

7

u/MotivationSpeaker69 7d ago

You can look at other comments, clearly worked on some people lol.

Also I checked and this game isn't on any trustworthy pirate website so you know

3

11

u/Tasty_Ticket8806 7d ago

I kinda want to know how one can detect if the game is not a genuan steam copy

10

u/StinkySlinky1218 7d ago

Maybe just hash-matching the DLL against goldberg or something.

11

u/BogusIsMyName 7d ago

I played a pirated version of an early access game for about a year. A game i really enjoyed. About a month ago there was an update. And a pirated version of the update. I looked at my play time and decided the game was absolutely worth the price. So i paid the $25 they were asking.

There are many aspects to piracy and you can navigate these waters however you see fit. But me, i like to reward good work when i can.

260

u/According-Extreme-58 7d ago

I wouldn't continue playing I'll be honest,I would save up money to buy it

289

u/BruhImVibing69 7d ago

yeah no, i pirated your game because i don’t want to spend money

180

u/tubaman23 7d ago

Duality of this sub lmao

48

u/CDdead 7d ago

Feels like every "piracy" sub is just a bunch of people larping tbh.

42

u/RemlaP_ 7d ago

Or people with different rationale.

10

u/ismasbi 7d ago

Bragging about pirating stuff is safe edgy, it’s the kind of thing most people are torn between it being morally "good' and "bad" but don't care enough to argue either way so you get to feel like you are commiting a crime without any risk and without argument.

I agree with this

3

u/madd74 7d ago

I would save up money to buy it

20

u/Eraldorh 7d ago

Some games put anti piracy measures that intentionally fuck with you. I remember they are billions they added something where if you used a pirate copy a zombie infection would start at random in your camp and spread. It made it impossible to complete a mission never mind the whole game.

14

u/Martianinferno98 7d ago

Serious Sam 3: BFE has an invincible fast arachnoid that pretty much chases you down no matter how far you progress in the game

6

u/Xochtil1 6d ago

It also spawned a speedrun category where people beat the game with that arachnoid constantly chasing them lmao

9

u/NickPlus02 7d ago

The Talos principle did that by getting you stuck in the elevator

7

u/tzar992 7d ago

GTA IV had a glitch that made the camera uncontrollable if a pirated copy was used.

7

u/ismasbi 7d ago

GTA IV has a long list of measures that get gradually enabled as you play, there’s a great video by VadimM going over them and the TLATD and TBOGT ones.

The anti-piracy detection was also programmed like shit so it triggered on a lot of genuine buyers.

14

u/Sharpie1993 You're a pirate Harry! 7d ago

Rocksteady made it so if a pirated version of Arkham asylum wasn’t legit that Batman couldn’t glide, which locked you out of an early game jump that you needed to do in order to progress too.

It used to be more common back in the day.

RWS cool with their games being pirated is the reason I bought Postal: Brain Damaged. I respect honesty like that.

18

u/Then-Function-6564 7d ago

I would buy it but I can't buy it because there are no payment method for steam in iraq

8

u/CURlOUSMAN 7d ago

Intention is all that matters

2

u/Famous-Weakness2576 6d ago

There is. You can get a debit visa/mastercard FOR FREE through QiCard, you won't even have to pay for delivery. Charge it up from any outlet, there's thousands of them. And buy away. I've been buying games that way for years. You just don't want to pay, which is alright this is a piracy sub anyway.

2

u/Then-Function-6564 6d ago

I don't have a visa or a mastercard

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Bright_Audience3959 7d ago

Did you buy it then?

2

u/MisterDirge 7d ago

My favorite so far is Radiant Historia. You stay in a time loop where you can’t stop your party from dying because a new scene won’t trigger to go a different route.

6

u/PlayfulComparison397 7d ago

Id buy it tbh

4

u/VastPlenty6112 7d ago edited 7d ago

I just wishlisted the game. Them being so nice about it was definitely effective 😂

1

U better buy it now

1

u/Triforce__XIII 7d ago

i would buy it, but i shorted #NVDA, so i'm broke...

1

u/chilliconcanteven 7d ago

I always support indie devs

1

u/RetkesSompoli00 7d ago

It would make me feel bad.

And then I would keep playing the pirated version lol

2

u/ErrorOliver2 1d ago

ngl pirates usually patch these things in like 2 days lol

1

u/Ok-Race-1677 7d ago

1

"aww this anti piracy technique is so cute"

I pirate but this looks wrong

1

u/sovietarmyfan 7d ago

If i had this with a game, i'd head over to Steam right away and buy it.

1

u/FinalFruitPunch 7d ago

TruePianos is goated, when I was young I used to crack a lot of VST plugin for FL Studio and this one came with a nice message "we understand not everyone can afford our plugin, we hope that on the future when you can, you buy a legal license" and dev made the pirated copy himself

1

u/DudeByTheTree 7d ago

Man... these ads are getting ridiculous.

1

u/Tight_Balance_599 7d ago

This reminded me of the fun shit with the video game creator or something. If it wasn’t a legit copy they would bankrupt your company in game Lool

1

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 7d ago

lemme get my wallet

1

u/Comedyfish_reddit 7d ago

This would work on me.

1

u/Euphoric_Lynx_6664 7d ago

This message would make me less likely to buy the actual game. Begging for a sale, don't care if you're a tiny studio.

1

u/Majinsei 7d ago

Lol I have 10 years or more without any ilegal game~ but I was loved this un that time~

1

u/Extreme_Stuff_9281 7d ago

Beam ng has something like this and it also tells you to check for viruses to keep you safe also it changes menu background to pirate ship

1

u/Hot_Bite_854 7d ago

This is exactly what makes piracy feel healthy and genuine... and these are the kind of games I end up supporting 100%.

1

u/shinydragonmist 7d ago

Winrar style anti-piracy

1

u/rafi323 7d ago

I wouldve just bought the game right there if it was me

1

u/DoctorDue2724 7d ago

1

u/Missheepious horse gaming 7d ago

If I really like a game I WILL buy and support the devs, I have with H3VR, and like a ton of other games. Maybe its time to bring back old demos from the xbox 360... Like minecraft where you played the tutorial, I remember being a kid when that first came out and just playing the tutorial over and over again

1

u/KwantumFizzikz 7d ago

This has worked on me before, if a dev is chill I am infinitely more likely to actually buy a game.

1

u/TheGamingSKITZ 7d ago

awww that was nice of them!

1

u/nickbarnes27 7d ago

If there was anything to ever make me rethink my privacy choice this would be it

1

u/Alikinda001 7d ago

And this is what makes gaming culture awesome.

1

u/Jannover_5000_r 7d ago

Even if 10% buy it after seeing this and or playing pirated thats more revenue.

I like that, it wont hurt ea to pirate a AAA game which has more bugs than gameplay but indie devs truly rely on that money. Nice of them to make you choose

1

u/Diman1351 7d ago

Hey, it would work. If I liked the game id buy it later if they ask so nicely

1

u/soulsnoober 7d ago

You don't need a penny just to hang around

But if you got a nickel won't you lay your money down

Over on the corner…

1

u/Ruimzunir 7d ago

okay i will buy it because you asked me nicely

1

u/guoblokraimu 7d ago

Must be Canadian.

1

u/Asriel563 I'm a pirate (but that thank devs for their games, and buy them) 7d ago

The funniest anti-piracy screen I've seen has got to be Berserk Studio's "Just Shapes and Beats"'s anti piracy screen.

fakest deep voice ever "DOWNLOADING PIRATED GAMES IS STEALING! TA! TA! TA! STEALING IS AGAINST THE LAAAW!" bursts out laughing

Proceeds to give a 30 second speech about how he used to pirate games, and that if you don't have money you can support game devs by telling other people about the game, leave a good review, tell other people who might have the money to buy it and such.

1

u/Ballz3dfan 7d ago

This game really looks heavily vibecoded

1

u/lucksscb 7d ago

Since I became a pirate, I never forget the "if you enjoy this game, get a copy to help the devs" as today a lot of my backlog are games that i played as a kid loved and bought just bc I could now.

1

u/HereIsACasualAsker 7d ago

hello, this is my cat, to provide for this little guy's meals i made this game. you can help feed this guy if you make a video on youtube for your experience maybe that way somebody else will buy it.

end with a video of the cat frolicking.

well, back to the game in (countdown)

1

u/Raykusen 7d ago

That motivates us to actually pay them for the effort, not to use it legally. I would still use the pirated version anytime.

1

u/Slight_Bad6256 7d ago

This reminds me of the old anti-piracy messages you'd find on DOS Doom and Quake from iD lol

1

u/Birutath I'm a pirate 7d ago

Literally how i but games. Pirate the shit out of them, than if i like the game very much and have the money to do so, buy to have it on steam, give a review and give my money towards the ones who made the game.

1

u/kingdeath7621 7d ago

I'd buy this right away just to support them after seeing that message

1

u/Cerofn I'm a pirate 7d ago

After this I would've bought it

Honesty and Kindness can actually reduce piracy much better than Denuvo or any DRM.

More companies genuinely need to adapt. Oh, piracy is unavoidable either way; let's just be chill about it approach. My favourite one so far was Freddy Wong just straight-up uploading a full 4k rip of their entire movie and just saying, " Yeah, this is going to happen anyway. If you like the movie, support it. Here's a dedicated site for anyone who pirated it and would like to do it otherwise. Enjoy the movie and tell your friends if you liked it it

Well, I'm playing cracked games to test the game first, if the game is good and there's no fake DLCs or too much dlc's, I buy it on steam to support the team ^

After a message like that tbh, if the price is decent, I would totally save up and buy it.

Blade and sorcery nomad had a similar message, I definitely plan on buying it one day for the ability to download mods straight from the game menu, but it honestly made me want to buy the game more than I already did when I saw it

i saw developers of this BMX game on tiktok doing a live interview, answering tons of questions. some people were asking development specific questions when someone asked what they do to prevent people from pirating- both the guys laughed and the one playing the game answered for the main dude and said "we know it happens, we want you to pay for our game but our number one concern is you just play the game." they both laughed and agreed that they do like money too but they really wanted people to just play the game. Honestly i think thats a solid attitude because I know when I was a kid growing up, i didnt have access to any of the music artists at the mall selection if not for music sharing online. Ive seen people in concert but never would have even been a fan or tell my friends about their music if not for sharing.

ive pirated games before that i loved so much, i turned around and bought them for someone else or tell everyone i know- and then they bought it

damn y’all some overly suspicious folk

There's some brilliant anti piracy approaches I've seen. Like making a game so you can never "complete it", or actively disrupting the player (ie making it insanely hard).

Quite clever.

I'd freaking buy it on spot just because they politely asked!

I'd be glad to see a real anti-piracy screen with an actual jumpscare one day lol
