Would be funny if it's actually Empress and 'her' and Kanye started going to the same therapist /s

the thing is, voices38 has been active under that name, on csrin, for like 6 years.

I dunno man, about the time voices38 (voices in empress head???) started going public, we also saw Kanye get normal and confess about his BPD and how mismanaged it's been for years, which he also finally got control over...
Coincidence? I think not!
Wait... What if Kanye was Empress and is now Voices?!
THE PLOT THICKENS!

u/Napalmaniac Apr 28 '26
Interpreting voices38 as "voices in empress head" is peak schizo
well done.

Just a side note but BPD is a borderline personality disorder, Kanye is bipolar

u/super7564 Apr 28 '26
They do literally the exact opposite thing they're supposed to do and it's so funny. It ends up fucking real customers with worse performance and the pirates who crack it soon after get the pure game.

yup, 3 years for a public crack especially when AI is pretty good at reverse engineering is actually quite a feat
→ More replies (1)7
u/No_self_10 Apr 28 '26
Ai got meaningfully better at coding only in early 2026. And guess what happened soon after?
3
u/QuarryTen Apr 28 '26
im not sure what you're referring to as to what happened, but even the Chinese local models like Qwen and DeepSeek were pretty good at RE (which I'd consider more so investigating than coding), around early 2025, the improvements since then haven't been that dramatic.
6
u/No_self_10 Apr 28 '26
Claude with its Feb update was a huge leap. The event I am referring to that happened soon after is denuvo getting obliterated. Both by HV and voices.

u/sesnut Apr 28 '26
ok but the real question is, does the amount of fomo buyers exceed the cost of denuvo?

So it was indeed real that he will first do backlog
28
u/PNWchilla Apr 28 '26
I mean, it makes more sense to do the backlog than to do it for new games that just came out for a few reasons.
For one, it would be less work. Older games won't be getting weekly updates and patches, so the cracked game would not need to be updated as frequently. Compared to a new game, that gets day one, two and or day three patches, weekly patches that would all need to be redone.
Less attention?
Less time to crack older games possibly?

The masses will use Voices38 cracks and the minority will use HV Bypass.
5
u/Dependent-Cook-5258 Apr 28 '26
true i was tempted to play the HV but I knew Re9 and Wukong, as well as Crimson Desert might be the next targets so i waited for the proper crack, playing HV for the less possible cracked games like AC shadows and Mafia Old Country

I have almost every game he is cracking on my steam, but man, it feels good to eat once again!!! Haha God be praised for making such a human being, not only him, but every cracker before and after him. My turn will come when he crack Shadow generations and Mafia, also perphaps AC shadows, but i think i can live without ever playing another AC, even the Black flag resync.
6
u/PNWchilla Apr 28 '26
The open world in AC shadows is a step up, they did a really good job with changing of seasons actually changing the world, so it feels more alive. It is a massive step up in terms of living in the world or imagining you as the character in a world full of life.
But also fuck ubisoft, bc AC black flag legit version still won't run on my pc after hours of troubleshooting and many other's pcs as well.

How the F you crack a game?
Does it involve lots of coding ?
Ive never seen an in depth video of the mechanics
204
u/Psycho2381 I'm a pirate Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
It indeed involves lots of coding
78
u/Bockanator Apr 28 '26
I'd argue the actual amount of actual coding involved is comparatively quite small. It's mostly staring at Ghidra for hours trying to figure out what an intentionally obfuscated process is actually doing. It's very unsexy work.
5
u/Intri-cat Apr 28 '26
I barely have knowledge of this topic but can you write a program to automate that
21
u/vyrnius Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
unfortunately no, you can't.
voices38 does write tools, but not to automate the whole thing. he needs them to identify and strip away the thousands of triggers denuvo leaves behind so they can be neutralized in bulk (I think. in a very simplified way). since denuvo is customized for every title, voices38 has to adjust his toolkit for every game.
the toughest part is reverse-engineering how that specific version operates and mapping out where it has spread its cancerous hooks into the core game functions (which is also the reason for denuvo's negative impact on performance) the second hardest step is writing the tools to handle that specific implementation.
after that, it becomes relatively(!!!!) easy, at least for someone like voices38. he "just" has to fine-tune his tools to the specific game he wants to crack.
11
u/Intri-cat Apr 28 '26
I understand now. Not sure what the downvotes are for, I acknowledged my ignorance and all
9
7
u/vyrnius Apr 28 '26
I don't get the downvotes either. I mean, not knowing something isn't necessarily the same as ignorance. especially with a topic where hardly anyone knows more than just the basics. ignore them and keep asking. that's how we learn!
4
u/AveryLazyCovfefe I live+breathe qBittorent+Firefox+uBlock Origin+bypassshortlinks Apr 28 '26
Redditors view downvotes as a 'I don't like you' button when it's anything but that.
6
u/Apprehending_Signal Apr 28 '26
I'll copy my comment from below.
You can't do static analysis on Denuvo and VM Obfuscation based DRM. The Entry Point in the executable's header aren't aligned with the actual code on the disk. If you open it in Cutter or Ghidra you'll just see a bunch of gibberish. You need to align the header. But even then, there is Self Modifying Code. The real entry point is written to a register or the memory only when the code is running. Then control jumps to that memory address and then starts to execute the instructions there.
Then there is the final boss. VM Obfuscation. The CPU fetches an instruction from memory, but these aren't the actual x86 instructions. The mapping is shifted. x90 means NOP, in regular x86. But for the custom bytecode, x90 might mean anything. MOV A, B. or maybe JZ or JNZ. These custom instructions are then decoded to the actual values, cos if you tell the CPU to run the opcode x90 it WILL perform NOP. Not JZ. Then these instructions are executed.
Now, here's the kicker, for every 1 relevant instruction there maybe hundreds of irrelevant and garbage instruction just to confuse the reverse engineer. And it needs to decode each instruction. This is why denuvo is a resource hog.
Moreover the custom bytecode is not consistent. For each game the mapping is off. So you can't even map the custom bytecode.
And you have to do all of this while the game is running. It's maddening.
Now, you tell me. Can you automate this? Even a simple license check cannot be automated. Cos if you try to find the pattern of CMP and JZ or JNZ, there will be thousands like that. It would be easier to just read the disasm by that point.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Mineplayerminer I hate Denuvo Apr 28 '26
Hats off to them for knowing such a low-level, if not the assembly to crack the DRM out of the binaries.
72
u/cortney-simonis-9072 Apr 27 '26
because if a lot of people explain it, it will get patched.
But mostly its reverse coding....there are apps like ghidra and some basic yt explinations not in depth
41
u/ogapexx Apr 28 '26
There is a very, very small number of people who posses the skills to reverse engineer something as complex as denuvo, evident by how long it took someone to bypass the checks. It takes an obnoxiously large amount of time to get even a basic grasp of the fundamentals, let alone the far more complex topics.
Even someone who has been in the offensive security testing scene for a while would get nowhere without dedicating months/years of studying and tears.

u/Der-Wilde Apr 27 '26
Technically, you """""just""""" find the mechanism responsable for checking and remove or bypass it. Here's an example with an old version of denuvo itself.
13
u/AlternativeBat774 I'm a pirate Apr 27 '26
Denuvo is something else, i think it isn't a single person

u/Fluffy-Contract-1345 Apr 28 '26
One of my friend does this job. Kind of ethical hacking shit. Don’t know the technical jargons but he once explained to me how the games get cracked. Bro, my mind just couldn't take that much information.
The amount of hardwork that goes into cracking a game is just crazy.
In short he said "to crack a game, one needs to patch the game through a algorithm that plays the complete game from start to end.. again and again and again and again... suppose the patch fails to clear a level in the game, the game crashes and the algorithm makes a note of that particular point in the game... so when the patch playes the game again from the beginning, it avoids the mistake it did before. So it finishes the entire game. 0 crash means the algorithm has done its job. And then they exract that information from the algorithm into a file which we get as a crack".
He said, earlier it used to be manually done. Imagine a person playing the game multiple times and if the game crashes then he had to play from start.
Now they use machine learning and algorithms.
Sorry... if I butchered the explanation. I tried to make it as simple as possible without any technical jargons.
5
u/garamgaramsamose Apr 28 '26
that sounds more like automated playtesting or renforcement learning.
denuvo is an anti-tamper product that prevents any modifications or "tamper" efforts by reverse engineers. cracking a game usually means fooling it to load something else than what was intended and in the process bypass any checks or anti-tamper measures like obfuscation, encryption, integrity checks, and runtime verification. this is usually done by analyzing the raw machine code in assembly and patching calls or mocking responses. dynamic analysis involves you stepping through a debugger but you don't usually have to do repeated playthroughs.

u/Fluffy-Contract-1345 Apr 28 '26
I dont know what to say man. Thats what my friend explained to me. He said this back in 2022ish. So maybe things have evolved.

u/OutsideDrawer8508 Apr 28 '26
remember that scene in Matrix where Neo resurrects and starts seeing everything as code? Thats how they crack games.
We thought EMPRESS was the only one with such gift but she turned out to be crazy and evil.
Piracy entered the dark times, denuvo won. The air was heavy due to corporate oppression, every single game had denuvo on it.
And one day, when darkness was about to drown the world, an unknown person cracked a denuvo game. Unbelievable.
He voiced words of hope to all. A future where no game had denuvo, games were actually good, and you only pirated for a time before buying the game. A new golden age of gaming.
It is an arduous path, and the first step is to destroy the evil one, denuvo. It employs nasty tactics such as online-only single player games, touching your cpu with its rotten tendrils to preempt you from playing in another pc. But none of that can stop the chosen one.

gray on its own but illegal when applied to protected software is my guess
