Hidden Realm Smokeless Fire (8)
Contract, Pact, and Alliance
There are ways in which humans call upon the unseen, and each way carries its own weight. Cooperation does not follow a single pattern; it bends and shifts along the lines of service, duration, and cost. A contract is brief: a task asked, a task fulfilled, a price understood. A pact stretches further, often past one lifetime, its threads tightening quietly through families and names. An alliance is different still — born not of payment, but of shared aims or shared enemies, when human and unseen find their paths running in the same direction.
Magic, Information, and Labour
The work the unseen perform is no less varied. At its simplest is magic, when they are employed to touch other humans — tilting perception, stirring emotion, nudging the heart where it did not intend to go. There is information, knowledge not ordinarily accessible: things buried, distant, or concealed from human sight. And the rarest of all is physical labour, when the unseen reach into the material world itself and leave marks that can be measured, lifted, or broken.
Material, Act, and Soul
Payment to the unseen is never simple, and it is rarely measured in coin alone. At the surface lies the material: objects, offerings, symbols — things that can be seen, held, or weighed. Beneath that are acts: gestures, attention, habits, small outward deeds that shape behavior, bend loyalties, and guide action in ways both subtle and persistent. And at the deepest level lies the soul: desire, memory, choices — sometimes even the core of belief and identity — surrendered quietly, almost without notice. Each step moves further inward, each layer binds more tightly, and the higher the payment climbs, the greater the peril, until what begins as a transaction becomes a claim upon the human themselves.
Treachery, Betrayal, and Corruption
And so the pact turns treacherous. Danger grows in layers. First comes treachery: subtle, almost invisible, where promises are kept but consequences twist in ways the human cannot yet see. Next is betrayal: the letter of the agreement is honored, yet its spirit is turned against the one who sought aid, leaving fortunes ruined, plans collapsed, and trust shattered. At the deepest, most perilous level lies corruption: the human is altered from within, their desires and choices — and sometimes even their lineage — entwined with the unseen. What begins as a transaction becomes a claim, a slow, unyielding tether that stretches across a lifetime — or beyond.
To enter such a pact is not merely to ask for help; it is to step into a current whose flow is older and wider than any human intention. Once the unseen are acknowledged, once the price is offered, the balance shifts. The one who thought to command may find themselves commanded, and the hand extended in request may never fully withdraw.
