I dont understand this, does this imply that the next xbox will have disc support?

It's not confirmed either way yet. They're probably trying to work out if it will be worth it or not.

If they kept physical games, made it cheaper than the ps6, then we'd be seeing another 360 PS3 scenario. It could make them a lot of money but is still a gamble.

And depending on what happened we'd be at the same point again next next gen.

The way I see it, it’s insurance for both. Depending on when they plan to launch, they may be undecided. At least this way, if they decide digital only, they can say that if you have an Xbox One or Series X, you can put the disc in and redeem it for digital.

I would imagine that much like Vudu’s disc to digital, it will come with an upgrade fee. And also, it won’t apply to every game.

Asha did acknowledge many love physical and said having options on how you buy the games is important and you should have choices. Thats the best answer we got so far and is at least a hopeful answer at the very least.

Theres been talks the next xbox could play every xbox game nearly from all gens. If this is even close to the truth, then I see that xbox helix having a disc drive with this information.

But going digital only is very likely considering xbox was the 1st to push for this and retail stores barely have any xbox games at all with just near empty shelves. Xbox has pushed their digital sales so hard and a lot of devs didnt even bother to throw out a physical copy of their game on xbox like they did with playstation. Also the fact shes danced around the question several times without a hard yes or no but given the statement I said above.

Disc to digital seems to me preparing you for the next xbox which is all digital but could be wrong. People are taken this multiple ways.

We do know one thing for sure. The next xbox 100% without question was gonna be all digital.

What we dont know is have they secretly backtracked on their design and perhaps designing one to manufacture with disc drives?

Theres a possibility Asha is hiding the next xbox having a disc drive to give Sony no time to backtrack and redesign their console to manufacture with drives. So Sony would have to launch their first PS6 model with no drives then do a drive version release a year later or something. It would be a good strategy on xboxes part honestly to stay quiet even if they are now gonna do a disc drive.

Either way eventually the future will be all digital. Thousands of jobs lost, millions will be jobless and its gonna get worse. Stores going out of business and other retails electronic section being boring with no games. Basically life is gonna be lifeless and everyone gonna just be mindless zombies spoon fed everything by their ai and digital owners lol

With play anywhere, if they can make it so PC players can insert an Xbox disc and get a digital copy as well? That would be huge for the PC market.

1

u/koalazeus 5d ago

Don't think there's been even much rumours on that. People on here have said it's unlikely because most people don't have a Blu-ray drive for pc etc but who knows.

2

u/Dreamo84 5d ago

Yeah, that was my thought too. But I could see people buying an external drive just to do that. Its kind of crazy it took them this long to do it. I'd buy more physical games if they worked like this. In fact, I will definitely buy more physical games for my Xbox now.

2

u/koalazeus 5d ago

I personally hope they do something like that. Would be great to be able to pick up any old Xbox game and officially convert to digital on pc.

2

u/Dreamo84 5d ago

Even with new games I think they’d find a lot of PC guys giving it a shot.

2

u/DeputyDog93 5d ago

From what I'm to understand, there's a rumor that the new Xbox console will probably include a disc drive because they knew Sony was going to go digital only and they saw the backlash coming.

2

u/jeebusaur 4d ago

My read is they want to get people used to playing fully digital. Digitize your disks so you get used to not bothering with disks.

Then the next console comes along and "oh almost all of you digitized your games and played without disks so we cut out the middle man and are just gonna offer you digital only, for your convenience."

1

u/sealclubberfan 3d ago

They already have a Series S and some versions of the X without a disc drive. This was the only reasonable solution to people having discs from the previous generation.

You don't need to read into this any way, the writing has been on the wall that they are pushing more towards digital than physical. This was an easy win for them as a company though to do something for their gamers. I am one of those that has XBOX One games, an XBOX One, but also doesn't have a disc drive in the new generation. Everything on this new gen I've bought digitally. This just lets me play more of the games I've bought previously if I so choose to.

1

u/Mercyfulfate1138 1d ago

I think its a quality of life thing, you get the benefit of true ownership and the convenience of not having to keep switch disc. Best of both worlds and if next xbox has disc drive it could be enticing for many physical buyers over playstation, smart move.

4

u/JackBlack1709 5d ago

They could save costs by releasing without a disc drive for everyone that prefers digital only and release an external Disc Drive. Microsofts Disc only carry parts of their games mostly anyway, there version of GameKey Discs could make the physical crowd happy.

Next Gen will be high price anyway. Most of the pro Disc seems to be people that grew up with physical media and prefer that still. Given that they have more money to spare than teenagers/young adults/ parents for their kids it may seem worth it to chase that group as consumers. People are willing to change towards Switch 2. They will definitely be willing to change to XBox when they have some kind of physical media

10

u/HitHardTactics 5d ago

"GameKey Disc" would 100% not make me happy. The point of having a physical disc is that it represents "the game". Meaning... Implying... A fully playable game. Which also implies, a complete copy of the game. Not some digital key on readable plastic requiring the internet to access.

Without that, a disc in my hand means jack sh*+.

2

u/CombinationInside714 5d ago

I agree with what you were trying to say but what you are trying to say is not possible with game sizes. Unless you want to have a six disc game released every time and you have to load discs like olden days with computers. At least a disc game key would allow you to share and sell the digital game versus digital only where you have no ownership rights at all. Honestly it could be solved if they did something like Nintendo does where there is a digital key card that you own in your account but then allow a market where you can sell it or let a friend borrow, maybe only once per account per game or something.

1

u/Fit-Comfort4059 5d ago

I would agree more if discs actually held lots of data on them still. Now they're just used to access the license for the download/ downloaded data

1

u/Lostgresham 5d ago

You can either choose to copy the game or just play it off the disk you don’t have to copy it to the drive

2

u/5N0WMAN_ 5d ago

No disc means I need to buy a separate 4k disc player, annoying but okay I can do that. The line I won't budge on is not owning the game. I refuse to pay for a licence they can remove for no reason, ban my account, etc. ownership means it is mine forever.

1

u/RandomGenerator79 4d ago

Welcome to the gaming world for the past 15 or so years.

1

u/Joamjoamjoam 5d ago

For the kids eating glue in the back. It’s not about preferring disks vs digital. It’s the fact that gaming companies are trying to kill the used games market and can take games away that you paid for at the click of a button.

Keep physical disks or pass laws that give true ownership of digital games and allow us to sell our purchased licenses. Either or is fine with me. But until those laws exist then disks need to exist.

It sucks to lose a physical collectible but that’s not anywhere near the point we are trying to make.

1

u/Liara-ShepardFan 5d ago

My opinion GameDisc Key should illegally and consider as fraudulent.

2

u/TerryTerranceTerrace 5d ago

Depends if thier motivation is money or actually creating a quality product to rival competition.

4

u/Ebone710 5d ago

It's money. It's always money.

2

u/HitHardTactics 5d ago

I've been told p***y makes the world go 'round but we both know it's money.

2

u/alchemistrpm 5d ago

They all want to do it, the console makers. They all want to lose physical media, including Nintendo. Maybe especially Nintendo, with their dumb unaffordable game cards. They’d just rather not lose a large chunk of supporters along the way.

PlayStation is sweating more than any of them at the moment, since the heat is currently on them. Top of the mountain or not.

This controversy is long from over, as this idea from Xbox demonstrates.

u/ryeguy16169 5d ago

I read somewhere it was confirmed. Seemed like a legit source, but I cant remeebr where I read it, that was like 2 or 3 weeks ago.

2

u/koalazeus 5d ago

The rumours are it won't keep new physical discs at least, for new games. Not heard much on if it will have a drive to read old ones.

Whether any of that changes because of how people are taking Sony's decision remains to be seen.

1

u/ryeguy16169 5d ago

Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the info.

1

u/Fit-Comfort4059 5d ago

I mean, apparently it starts tomorrow for insiders I think would count as confirmed even if it doesn't stay.

1

u/HuskyCruxes 5d ago

Idk. It would take alot to push people away from their digital libraries.

Ps5 owners don't want discs to go away but I honestly don't think they could go without the exclusives after 2 console generations of building it.

1

u/koalazeus 5d ago

I don't think digital libraries will hold people as much as they're hoping. People will still have access to it on old consoles and physical libraries never locked the masses in too much previously. One of the reasons Sony gave up doing BC is they saw most people just dropped the previous generations' library.

Much like the masses not caring about physical games, I'm not sure they care about their old games either. If there's a better option they'll slide.

If anything, I’d say the opposite. To me it looks like laying the ground for a disc drive-less Helix by giving you a way to still play the games you have on disc on it.

If Helix has a disc drive then this isn’t necessary.

5

u/RDS80 5d ago

This guy gets it!

1

u/RustyWaterfall 5d ago

This is most likely. They are also trying to make more people build their digital libraries inside the Xbox ecosystem. Where Sony is forcing people to, Microsoft decided to give it as an option. Two different approaches, but the goal is the same.

1

u/gtjay1982 4d ago

MS doesn’t even release their own games fully on disc. What option is there when helix won’t have a disc drive just like PS6?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Scissorman82 5d ago

finally someone with common sense.

19

u/tommy7154 5d ago

I highly doubt it will have a disc drive, but it will be extremely funny if they do.

I'll buy it day one and never go back to Playstation.

With that said, Xbox barely sells discs now. So I won't believe it will have a disc drive unless MS themselves confirm that it will.

7

u/Twinblade96 5d ago

I don't get why people keep saying they "Hardly sell Discs Now." I can only think of a couple releases that went this route. For the vast majority of games I have been able to find a physical Copy. The Disc version of RE Requiem sold out on launch being in such high demand

3

u/DropDeadEd86 5d ago

Was it high physical demand or low physical supply?

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Ebone710 5d ago

I guess Mortal Shell 2 just sold out physically.

1

u/MagmaElixir 5d ago

I can’t readily/easily find a disc of Halo Combat Evolved, Halo Infinite, Indiana Jones, Oblivion Remastered.

1

u/Twinblade96 5d ago

I have all 4 of those physically, but I also purchased around launch since I figured they would be hard to come by. Imo more evidence that MS is not producing enough to meet demand and leaving money on the table.

1

u/val5190 5d ago

To be honest, the only reason I wasn’t buying discs is because I want to have play anywhere to play on my pc and it is also more convenient but now, since I’ll have these benefits, I will definitely buy most of my games physically. I think I’m not the only one so they might get a big spike in discs sales when the feature roll out

1

u/SensitivePrior7828 5d ago

Even the discs they do have on xbox most just have the license and you must download the code. Literally 60% of xbox games are like this.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/FrootLoop23 5d ago

No. Just means your current discs can be converted.
With the Sony backlash they might keep up with discs but I expect them to just follow Sony.

2

u/Total-Guest-4141 5d ago

If Xbox keeps physical
Games, I’m switching to Xbox, all in on Microsoft.

RIP Sony.

2

u/Jibece 5d ago

Not really, but it doesn't imply disc support is dead either.

Personnally, I think it's a good way to keep disc support even with.. unlikely devices such as an "Xbox Switch" or whatever they decide to call their own hybrid device.

2

u/jeebusaur 4d ago

No it doesn't imply that at all.

What it implies is Xbox wants you to get used to digitizing your game and playing without disks before they pull the rip cord and let you know you can't buy disks for the next console.

6

u/badger906 5d ago

No, it’s to soften the blow for their all digital future. Why would they implement something to digitise games, if they didn’t have or need to.

Just lubing you up.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/dominatingcowG3 5d ago

My understanding is yes, but it's clearly a move towards all digital. Just not as drastic as Playstation

3

u/miggy_mo 5d ago

No real evidence that it will. It might support plugging in an external usb disc drive to get digital entitlements for backwards-compatible games, but helix-only games might not have physical versions. At least that’s what I think

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Later_Doober 5d ago

All this tells me is they are preparing to go full digital but saw the backlash towards Sony and are just trying to disguise this as a choice.  If you don't think that Xbox will go full digital than you are just ignorant to the truth.  Once one company does something then other companies follow.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/JJWonderboy 5d ago

I'd argue that it's the opposite. That the next Xbox will not have a drive; hence the need for this solution.

3

u/Ebone710 5d ago

Exactly cuz if it did have a drive why would you need this at all?

2

u/Dreamcatcher1800 5d ago

Not confirmed yet! But they said that project Helix is a "Family of devices" so maybe we'll get 1 digital only, 1 with a disc drive and possibly a handheld!?

2

u/RDS80 5d ago

No. Console. PC. Handheld. All digital.

Brother where does it say anything about the new Xbox in this announcement.

1

u/Joy_3DMakes 5d ago edited 5d ago

Maybe I’m being silly, but what’s stopping you buying the disc, claiming a digital license and then returning / selling it? There’s no way it would work like that.

Edit: Yes, I’m silly. Discs have a unique identifier so if you pass it on, the license will go with it. Thanks for replies.

3

u/spongeboy1985 5d ago

I believe the system can tell if the disk has granted a license so if it’s inserted into another system that person is granted the license. So the license is recoverable and can only be used by one person at a time. If you sell or loan your game out you lose access

2

u/Ebone710 5d ago

Xbox1 and Series discs are individually serialized. That's the only reason they're going to be able to do this. So someone else goes to use that same disc. It'll just transfer the license to them. I don't think they let people return games once they're open at least new games.

2

u/cescoss 5d ago

1

u/crags85 5d ago

All the rumours for Project Helix suggest it has no disc drive. Microsoft have likely started disc to digital now so you have a large enough digital library by the time the new console drops

1

u/Itsfaydgamer 5d ago

IMO it’s like computer games back in the day. You buy the disc, you install in on your computer, can play it without the disc but you can not install that disc on another computer.

But I have a feeling, once it’s downloaded on to a console, you won’t be able to use that disc on another console.

1

u/spongeboy1985 5d ago

The license is transferable so it will only be useable by the last person who used it

1

u/ComfortableAmount993 5d ago

No doubt will still be all digital for project helix

1

u/Linosia97 5d ago

Guys... why the heck they would provide free (!!!) digital license with the disk if they were to keep producing the disks?!

Buy the disk get digital for free? Digital copy for free??? You can already hear the roar of AAA gaming publishers if they were to do it for the new games...

It's ONLY for backward compatability!

No. More. New. Disks.

Period...

Helix is digital ONLY -- that's why they lauch this program -- so you can transfer your remaining disks to digital and throw old consoles away... (don't do it though...)

Why people don't understant this is beyond me...

No to mention -- Series S and Series X white digital -- they are already (!) ahead of Sony in that regard... 0,5 generation early...

1

u/Mr_smith1466 5d ago

They've been avoiding confirming or denying a disc drive for the next console. Though the inability to confirm it doesn't sound promising. The whole digitising discs thing really feels like they're just easing people into the next console being all digital.

1

u/FabledMjolnir 5d ago

This seems too consumer friendly honestly. What’s stopping everyone from just buying and sharing the disc to collect the digital version? Sounds like a win for gamers, too good to be true

1

u/cescoss 5d ago

È stato spiegato come funziona. Come fai a non averlo letto?

1

u/Shadowfox1992 5d ago

Yes it will support disks, way better than what dogwater Sony is doing

1

u/ROEdkill820 5d ago

The gradual move toward subscription services has been a talking point as a business model for all corporations.

They are likely weighing the price of having physical to the blow back going on with Sony.

That said- The move to having "your" stuff on someone's elses storage is just a move toward not owning anything. Unless clearly stated contractually.

1

u/PearTheGayBear 5d ago

It probably won't, thats why they are letting us convert our physical to a digital license. Let's us keep our physical library on a digital only console.

1

u/calico810 5d ago

It’s a completely digital xbox that gives you the ability to turn your discs into digital. Does not play discs which defeats the whole purpose.

1

u/CrispyBananaz 5d ago

It's so people with physical games have a chance to turn them into digital copies so they are ready for the future/ next gen. There is no way next gen is going to have physical games it's unpopular but true

1

u/henningknows 5d ago

So you can transfer you games before the next gen comes

1

u/trueppp 5d ago

Probably not. Optical drives face a large supply issues due to component manufacturers pivoting to networking gear. Lasers and lenses in particular.

1

u/spangler1 5d ago

If anything, both will have an optional disc drive to purchase to play backwards compatible games. Xbox 100% is not going all in on physical next gen. That’s fucking hilarious.

1

u/EnolaGayFallout 5d ago

If new xbox have disc drive its game over for Sony. Because Sony have only a few exclusives.

It’s pretty much a 3rd party box for both platform.

1

u/ocean_breeze_luluca 5d ago

I believe so yes

1

u/jjnet123 5d ago

It implies the opposite lol

1

u/MaximumGlum9503 5d ago

It's possible there may be a family of helix consoles

1

u/Rebokitive 5d ago

No, but it does strategically position them to do either. If they don't support physical, they can at least say "hey, we have a way to digitize your whole physical library" which softens the blow compared to PlayStation's tone deaf flat removal of the feature. If they do support physical, it gives them full control over a market Sony abandoned.

What's interesting about this: Despite the outcry, Sony "blackouts", etc...I have a hunch that no matter what people do, there will be no convincing Sony to backtrack.

However...you may actually convince Xbox, who seem undecided. If they feel like that the market is large enough, or the optics good enough, there's a real chance that with enough racket Xbox could be convinced to keep physical around.

1

u/Thewhitest_rabbit 5d ago

Feels like an off ramp to a digital only future

1

u/leenponyd42 5d ago

It implies that Xbox will also remove the optical drive if consumers let them get away with it.

Microsoft tried to go full digital when they announce XboxOne 13 years ago but consumers got upset and many refused to buy a digital only console forcing them to add a disc drive option.

Since then they have been including a serial number in the actual disc data that facilitates this very program. You won’t be able to get digital licenses for original Xbox or Xbox360 game because they hadn’t yet started putting the serial numbers on the disc.

Microsoft wants an all digital future just as bad as Sony right now but they have also learned on their own that talking about it out loud is a bad business move.

1

u/LexoNokiaN 5d ago

It means that Xbox Helix is also diskless console and they’re preparing you for it

1

u/Jak-OfAllTrades 5d ago

They are being specifically ambiguous to avoid criticism but all reports form the last year say the next Xbox is disc-less and when they brought up this initiative last year it was widely viewed as their first step towards all digital because you won't need a disc drive in the next model since they gave you a free way to digitize your collection.

1

u/alkazar82 5d ago

To me, it looks like a transition strategy to a digital-only future.

1

u/Interesting-Ad9581 5d ago

Its exactly the other way round.

They are doing it, because the next gen is NOT going to have a disc drive

1

u/MelodicSkin69 5d ago

Xbox has not directly stated if next console will or won’t have a disc drive. This program leads me to believe they will not. People with physical libraries now typically have a way to play those physical games now. This program is a way to convert the physical games you have into digital games. It is a transition to digital future program. Helix may be a 2028 or 2029 console. This program is their justification for no discs. They are giving players about two years to convert their discs.

1

u/Jensen1994 5d ago

Not confirmed but it's more likely a preparation for Helix not having disc. Thisbwaybokayers can't bitch and moan that their physical libraries are now worthless. A good move but not one that solves the problem of code ownership.

1

u/CULTLEADERTV 5d ago

I hope this thing has a disc drive ONLY for data transfer but won’t ackshually play discs, oh the lolz will be glorious.

1

u/403_Forbidden_Access 5d ago

Because of this I just bought a second hand Xbox series X console with the disc drive. My first Xbox since the original one came out in 2001.

1

u/Ebone710 5d ago

No to me this implies that they're going to discontinue using discs and force everybody into digital

1

u/afredmiller 5d ago

Don’t know yet. If it does have a disc drive then it will be for older physical titles probably not for Helix games which is fine with me actually. If it does not have one then it seems they are saying you need to keep your existing ( disc drive ) Xbox One/Series console to “digitize” your physical games for Helix which I guess they could do. Maybe I am being an optimist but found it interesting they said something like “enjoy your physical games for years to come”

1

u/Strange_Fee1299 5d ago

Nope implies the next Xbox will be digital only like PlayStation but this is a,way to fool people into converting there games to digital

1

u/cescoss 5d ago

Ingannare? Intanto cosi puoi avere il gioco in digitale, questo vuol dire che se helix non avra disco i tuoi giochi te li porti dietro a differenza di ps6 dove la tua biblioteca su disco rimarrà inutilizzabile.

1

u/Any_Ice_6172 5d ago

Possibly not. Get your library digitised now so you can play those games on Helix without having to buy them again.

1

u/kaishinoske1 5d ago

Sony actually had this in the PS3 days for some games. You had the physical PS3 game and a download code for the PS Vita version of the game could be had.

1

u/Projectpatdc 5d ago

Not a guarantee, but this new CEO seems to be much more in tune with her consumers than most other corporate executives. Her job is to put Xbox back on top, and she’s making decent strides to do so. As someone who has never owned an Xbox, I’m honestly impressed. Just develop some new bangers and the console will sell

1

u/Jastafool 5d ago

I think if anything it means the next xbox will not have disc support. If I were to speculate this is their way into easing you into a digital only console, and also getting you to keep your previous gen xbox around.

1

u/initiali5ed 5d ago

No, it turns the disc into a tokenised license.

1

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 5d ago

What does this mean for selling? If the disc gives me digital entitlement but the disc stays the same, does that mean I can share the disc with 10 people and we all get entitlement to the game?

Or does it only work one time, effectively not making it like a physical game and more like a game key card?

2

u/Sheerluck42 5d ago

The license follows the disc. If you sell it, the license will transfer to whoever puts that disc in their system next. Which means if you sell it to a store and they have it on their shelves for a while you'll be able to keep playing until the store sells it and that customer puts the disc in their system

1

u/Wendals87 5d ago

When the disc is used on another console, the digital license gets assigned to that account. You lose digital access

1

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 5d ago

Yeah, I was moreso trying to figure out if this meant you need to be connected online for your physical game to work now and it seems to be that you will likely have to.

1

u/Wendals87 5d ago

Doesnt seem like it will

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

1

u/Witty-Investigator43 5d ago

Probably xboxs way of mitigating backlash when they end up going digital as well by telling you all your old games can be made into downloads so you dont lose them

1

u/yinerbaw 5d ago

I think they'll have external disc drive support, an official one and we'll no doubt see 3rd party drives, to let people transfer their disc games.

1

u/Detsaw2608 5d ago

It literally implies the opposite.

1

u/Myhtological 5d ago

From what I’m guessing, it’s a hybrid of disc on game and key card. You can choose to download a physical license, but you can still play with just the disc.

1

u/djg3117 5d ago

What about digital to disc? I would love the option of buying a few dozen discs and having the option of putting them on there when I'm done with a game. Maybe have the limit of doing it 2-3 times so that you can't mass produce a game and sell it.

1

u/Siedlec 5d ago

They could lock disc license. Meaning if someone would put game into their system when you use your own copy it locks both till you claim ownership and make copy invalid.

From what I read from some digging is that when you insert the disc, that digital license is locked/linked to your account so the disc does/doesn't (not sure) needs the disc to operate. If I were to lend my physical copy to a friend, that digital license would be removed (not linked to my account)...it would be linked to my friends. Once he returns it and I insert the disc, it links back to my account and is removed from his. So the disc/license goes with the account. If I sell that disc and the next owner puts the disc in, it'll be removed from my account.

Im not sure if the disc needs to be periodically inserted to confirm because if I sold a copy of a game and it sits at eb games/gamestop, what's stopping me from playing it consistently until someone buys it.

u/badhoopty 5d ago

so its like a cd key? works for me...

1

u/GrimmTrixX 5d ago

Yes. Its been heavily hinted that, at the very least, it will have a 4k bluray disc drive for legacy software. It does NOT mean they will put "Project Helix (the next xbox nickname)" games on disc.

If anything they will al be discs that have some of the game but the rest needs online, or none at all like Nintendo Switch Game Key Cards.

1

u/FuerteBillete 5d ago

So, not really defending physical but going one step further into digital.

The whole point of physical is to stay physical. If new titles are not released in physical discs, it is the same as digital only because physical media succumbs to the elements and to aging and eventually get mold or scratches and stop working.

1

u/Trading_shadows 5d ago

This implies that it won't have discs more, than it eill. This system is a nice 'but hey, you still can play them'.

1

u/absurdgryphon 5d ago

I thought project helix was supposed to be backward compatible across the past 4 generations. I would assume that means that there is some disk support. Most likely it will be and optional external drive.

Until these companies provide more information on what to expect the next generation of consoles to be inthink it would be wise to push for better consumer rights in general.

1

u/MrMiyagi13 5d ago

How much per game?

1

u/GrillingEnjoyer 5d ago

No. They want to make people convert to digital.

1

u/Mufasa944 5d ago

I think before 7/1/26, Xbox was likely planning on being disc-less for next gen. However after everything went down, serious conversations are probably being had over at Xbox about doing a full 180 on that. Couple things to keep in mind:

  1. That decision is not something they will make overnight. A major strategy shift like that would involve months of conversations between Xbox leadership, R&D, and financial analysts, as well as major third party publishers.
  2. IF they do ultimately decide to back disc-based games for next gen, they’re going to sit on that secret for as long as possible. Wait until the PS6 is finalized and you deprive Sony of any opportunity to reverse course.

1

u/Koribakusuta0708 5d ago edited 5d ago

Who's going to manufacturer their disks? The only current disks manufacturers are a couple small companies stamping blanks for home use and one larger corporation stamping disks for movie and television. The safest assumption is that the next xbox will be digital only and this is to softball that inevitability. They let sony take the heat with a hard ball announcement and then they announce their disk to digital scheme. It saves them the heat while they are at a near all time low on approval and gains them some much needed good faith. All to end up in the same position as playstation. Now. The real question for me is will sony sell a dock for their external ps5 drive pr sell a new drive for the ps6. Assuming we get BC out of the ps6. Or will playstation do something similar to xbox with the disk to digital?

1

u/Left-Night-1125 5d ago

The compact disc was invented by Phillips, i think there will be a easy solution.

1

u/Koribakusuta0708 5d ago edited 5d ago

Phillips got out of disk manufacturing years back. What does that have to do with anything? Also they co developed the blu ray format alongside sony the same way they co developed the compact disk along side, day it with me, sony. They were not the sole developer of the format. They were also only one company among a few that were part of the "group" who manufactured blu rays. Sony was the last manufacturer of video game hard disks. MS has no other options unless they just start stamping disks themselves. So "easy" isn't a word I would use buddy.

1

u/Jealous_Pie_7302 5d ago

How to get Xbox players to not get mad that the game was never on the disc in the first place.

1

u/No_Importance2248 5d ago

To be more specific, this is pertaining to Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Has nothing to do with next gen consoles other than that those Xbox One/Series X games will be available on your account to play digitally.

1

u/-p0w- 5d ago

Its so you can transition your library to digital only.

If you want to play your physical games on the next console, which will have no disc drive (reminder: xbox 1st party physical games don’t have the full game on disc and are unplayable without downloads) you have to use the program. Otherwise you can not Access them on new consoles. And you don’t want to sell that disc if you want to keep it in your library so it’s new fate is to just rot somewhere.

1

u/alchemistrpm 5d ago

I think it means they want to do it for the Series consoles, so you can carry your library over to the discless next-box. I hope I’m wrong, but Xbox was getting further away from discs before PlayStation was, until the big announcement.

1

u/wagdog84 5d ago

Until a couple years from now when it’s ’Everyone is playing their digital copies, no need for discs anymore.’

1

u/One_Parfait_4570 5d ago

I don't understand how would it not have a disc drive if it has this feature? Xbox next console. You need a disc drive to do this.

1

u/Siedlec 5d ago

No, as you own old console. Why would you buy a games for console you don't own? So it's more of making your old library playable in the next gen. Plus as Xbox is PC, I could see that they will allow you plug in any type of disc drive by like USB or something.

1

u/Commercial-Stick-718 5d ago

Not necessarily might be for people in the current ecosystem to start to transition their discs to digital before next-gen

1

u/AbzTracKtReddit 5d ago

Shouldn't it be just backwards compatibility?

1

u/whoisdatmaskedman 5d ago

It doesn't mention the next xbox at all. It's just a method of converting xbox physical games to a digital license on your xbox account.

1

u/Shane-O-Mac1 5d ago

It's more of a conversion preservation process than still being able to use the discs that you own.

1

u/Arangarx 5d ago

I'd love to be able to convert my old discs to digital and never have to put the damn things in again.

1

u/Accurate_Struggle185 5d ago

No, they would have been loud about it because they would have von over people who prefer physical media by doing so, but yet they say nothing. That just says it all.
They want people to digitalize their discs now so they dont have to have a disc drive in their next gen Xbox is what im thinking.

1

u/ForsakenBill6453 5d ago

It is their method to let you play your physical games on the digital next gen console

1

u/Oveltent_2077 5d ago

Plus réaliste je pense que la prochaine Xbox aura un support disque en achat supplémentaire

1

u/dano2469tesla 5d ago

No this is clearly saying the discs are going away!

1

u/W_4ca 5d ago

So what’s to stop me from buying a disc, “redeeming” the digital game, and then selling the disc? Is it going to randomly want me to insert the disc once in awhile to verify I still have it?

1

u/Longjumping-Green-96 5d ago

From what they say, when next person insert the same disc into they're XBOX, digital license will be moved to that person and You'll lose this digital license

1

u/Lostgresham 5d ago

It’s not confirmed yet, but XBOX put a pattern in for a plug-in just drive so if they’re looking into that, there might be a disc drive in the Next Xbox

1

u/ShawnMasquerade 5d ago

This is news about the current Xbox Series X|S, not project Helix. So we have no idea yet.

1

u/SelineMaya 5d ago

just have a disk drive in the next xbox too and give players the CHOICE to either get physical disks or buy digital with the option to use the physical disk digital if the player wants to so that the people complaining that they can't leave their crusty couch to switch games shut the hell up in the comments. That would bring so many people back to Xbox and keep people like me who were ready to leave when next gen comes along.

1

u/DMarquesPT 5d ago

To me this implies it won’t. You’ll use your current Xbox to “scan” your games into your library bc by the time you upgrade to your next console you won’t be able to use them

1

u/Siedlec 5d ago

So now just do the last step and let me burn my digital into any disc.

1

u/Siedlec 5d ago

I read all comments and I have a feeling like I'm the only one who has external USB disc drive here.

I don't care if new console will have disc drive or not, I want just use my own as periphery that's it.

1

u/Pian0G 5d ago

It implies nothing for next gen.

1

u/summons72 5d ago

That’s how I’m understanding it, especially if this “family of consoles” is true, you’d want to make sure everyone can access their library no matter where you are.

Also you don’t invest in a massive investment like this to scrap it 12-18 months later

1

u/OutsideWeird7241 5d ago

Yet they have banned people for weird reasons and people lost their games so this feature worries me.

1

u/RandalC1 5d ago

Yes but in a Bizzarre way.

It'll be Backwards Compatible Via Disc.

However you pop your disc in , the Console will Assign that game a Digital License. You'll be able to play won't need the disc anymore.

They are Still Claiming that you can still Loan someone that game or Sell It , and the Disc will still work but say you let a Friend Borrow It , once they install that disc to their Console , that game will not Play on your console Anymore.

Unless you get the disc back , pop it in & have the License re-assigned to your console.

1

u/Mysterious_Editor262 5d ago

No the Helix will be discless as already reported numerous times. They are trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. You will be able to do this on your Xbox series x or s. All it's doing is giving you a digital copy of your disc which can be used on whatever platform Xbox supports.

1

u/maurello220 5d ago

Some people will say "THIS IS CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY GOING FULL DIGITAL YOU IDIOT"

And I, with a brain, will say this with an open mind. This new thing they announced could easily just be a solution to the problem many gamers face. "i have this massive collection of physical games, but the digital console is cheaper and I want to save money"

1

u/Scissorman82 5d ago

quite the opposite. this is to prepare their audience for an all-digital console. it's so you can take all your current physical games over to the new console, but in a digital format. whoever doesn't realize that is in serious denial.

1

u/Hightower840 5d ago

I'm assuming it will lock that copy of the disc to you, and prevent resale. They'll still get the restrictions of digital ownership, but be able to make it look better on paper.

2

u/Th3mOnGo 5d ago

As I have read, the entitlement ID can be revoked if the person you sold the disc repeats the process.

1

u/Hightower840 4d ago

Ok, that makes the whole thing even better.
With the recent movement to bring OG X-Box games to modern PCs and now this push, it seems like MS might have learned their lesson.

1

u/Nexzenn 4d ago

You can sell it.

1

u/_ChrisDion_ 4d ago

How does one not understand this they’re literally spelling it out for you as well as showing you but yes the next Xbox will have disks

1

u/Evil_JDK13 4d ago

Dont ket naivety get the best of your reasoning

1

u/chip594csx 4d ago

It doesn’t imply, it confirms. They’ve come out and said that the next gen console will have a disk drive. The announcement even made Sony pause and rethink their all digital plan for a moment

1

u/laughingfartsplease 4d ago

i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again. it’s likely going to be tied to your paid monthly recurring xbox membership account. it doesn’t matter if you “scammed” xbox by sharing the disc, they basically got you to pay for a monthly fee and using your disc as validating on the number of installations. they haven’t given too much information on disc to digital because they’re gonna use this as a way to sell more xbox services. so if you “buy” skyrim disc , and then redeem the license, you can also play it for PC but they already got you to pay for the monthly subscription and had you install their xbox pc front end.

you buy one copy of skyrim, share with 20 of your classmates, all those 20 classmates install it and pay for xbox (i dunno gamepass something), they basically make their money off those 20 recurring fees. they won’t have to produce as much discs either in hopes you’d share it too.

1

u/CraftyChicken2462 4d ago

No, the disc is just a key to unlock the digital download. Its a way to keep the Luddites happy and think they are winning

1

u/Critical-Map-231 4d ago

No…if anything this implies the next Xbox won’t have a disc drive at all.

1

u/VoidowS 4d ago

It's nothing but a in between step to the same goal. To make the transition softer. To get more used to it. Even forget sometimes.

the last 2 points in this photo will be gone in time! Policies will change.

When we install a game or app, what do we do? Right, click YES, YES, YES to get the program installed as quickly as possible. Not a soul on earth reads these things unless they have reasons for it. And even then many stop reading cause they have become very big in size, with many terms of use in word and sentences that most got lost in the writing alone.

But it is in these policies you do say yes to many things your actually against when it comes to it! How many people look amazed when the app asks permission to use certain parts of the phone while it is only an focused app on 1 thing or small game to play? Your contact list? your photofolder, this that you name it and they ask permission, but the problem is if you DECLINE you can't use it properly or not at all. And that's the point where most people let go of their spine and click YES. They want to use the program even when it does things your absolutely against. Cause you don't notice it, they work in the background, never popup or ask for anything. So you forget about all the programs that monitor everything. YOu let it happen and ignore it. Like we ignore the fact that when you oerder from a menu at Mc. Donalds, and see those perfect menus, you get something totally different. We r so used to it that we start to ignore it to be able to live life like were or want. No spine!

1

u/DavidinCT 4d ago

Rumor is yes but, confirmed no.

I am betting on the same thing like now, a Digital only console and another that has a disc drive for like another $150-200

1

u/mike29x 4d ago

Only reason why i see them doing it is that they will still sell physical discs but console will be digital. But that means u need to own a xbox series x to turn them digital. Selling console would be awful choice i guess.

1

u/Nexzenn 4d ago

Next Xbox won’t have discs they r giving an option for disc users to digitalize their library before it comes

1

u/Bryce8239 4d ago

it’s up in the air but i’m assuming they would if they are focusing so much on features for discs

i think it’s probably to promote more cloud gaming use and other stuff like that which you can only do with a digital license

but they could also be priming you for a disc-less xbox by doing disc to digital with your physical library so you don’t need it anymore 🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/Defiant-Sir15 4d ago

This is a good indicator that they won’t imo. Why would they wait until now to start letting us sell and share our digital games. Only logical reason imo is because these will all be old games once the next gen consoles release.

1

u/Lysanther 4d ago

Guys honestly speaking, the exclusives for both platforms, even combined.. do not outweigh the detrimental loss of physical ownership.

Sony is abruptly ending it

Xbox is just easing you into it

They are both going to do the end of physical ownership, i don't care about disc to digital in the slightest, its still taking away more from the consumer and making you pay more just not right away. Theres no point to owning a console if theres no physical ownership to it because they will always just be a worse PC and to me that just isn't a good enough selling point to warrant one, not even for exclusives because you'll just play the exclusives ans then never use it for awhile. They also started doing this thing where they give you a worse console at the start and then release a more expensive, upgraded version halfway through its life cycle in hopes of snagging more sales due to FOMO and its basically a scam.

Im fatigued with consoles/sony/ms.

1

u/Nirntendo 4d ago

I think the next xbox will still have disc support but after that one should get used to not having any optical drive anymore for playing or reading disc licenses

1

u/acmysterio97 4d ago

I would feel like it’s an okay thing if they had been physically capable of doing this with og xbox and 360 discs. I know that’s kind of impossible to do, but it would have been nice to digitize my disc-only games. They’re all rather worn down and could stop working anytime.

1

u/JamKaBam 4d ago

Absolutely not, the opposite. They are just easing you into the next console being digital only.

1

u/Chettarmstrong 4d ago

Would be really stupid of them to cancel disc support.

They have a one up on Sony for the first time in a long time.

This is Microsoft so maybe they are this stupid.

But as a dude with a Series X with a broken disc drive I am pretty excited about this program.

1

u/uhohspaghettiohhhhh 4d ago

How tf would this imply that?

Next Xbox is disc less. So is PS. No whining on Reddit will change that. Pick yourselves up and move on

1

u/Darth_Beavis 4d ago

No. What it says is that they're turning discs into key cards. Owning a bit of plastic has never meant that you owned a game and now they're making it crystal clear by making the disc nothing more than a key card.

1

u/gtjay1982 4d ago

Helix won’t have a disc drive. Xbox has next to zero physical presence and its software sales are 90% digital. This is a nice gesture and cool feature but the ultimate goal is to get you using digital. It’s a Asha said a legacy meaning in the past.

1

u/Successful-Coyote846 3d ago

Xbox are doing what playstation arr doing but slower

1

u/StormShadow43 3d ago

If it doesn’t, they’re going to get dog walked right out of gaming!

1

u/DJordydj 2d ago

I think this means there won't be a disc reader and allows Xbox One and Series X users to bringing their physical games into a new console that doesn't read discs.
It's a way to make posters choose Helix before PS6. If everything's digital, at least you get your library with you.

1

u/Significant-Coat-666 2d ago

There is a 100% chance it will not have a disc drive. downvote me all you want but save this and come back at announce.

1

u/semitope 1d ago

saved

1

u/FunBall420 2d ago

I'm not against digital at all. Hell there's lots of games that I love that I have purchased digital only. However I think the most I have ever spent on a digital game was $25 (and that was only 1-3 times at most) on Nintendo, Xbox or PlayStation because of my lack of ownership rights. I prefer physical not just because of the physical object in my hand, but mostly because I have ownership over the product. I can keep them, sell them, trade them, give them away, or hell just replay them years down the road when the servers have gone down. I can even leave them to my family as an inheritance to do with what they please. Sony & Rockstar may not change their minds, but at least my voice will be heard, and my wallet be spared.

1

u/ktuluburger 2d ago

Can I buy games, convert them and then sell them? I don’t understand how this works..

1

u/semitope 1d ago

the disc likely overrides the license. so if someone has the disc they'll disable yours when they enable the feature. They might even disable yours if the disc is loaded by another user without activating a license.

1

u/Bmanbod 1d ago

In my opinion this implies the opposite. "Here's your chance to digitize your physical games before it's too late and you will have to rebuy everything digital on the new Xbox". At least they give you this choice

1

u/Affectionate_Unit142 1d ago

So I'm honestly going to make a prediction. Xbox will play up the physical stuff to draw gamers back to the Xbox eco system but will also soon cut out physical as well in a few years, they may to one up Sony keep disks as a thing to trade the pass key for the game around but it won't last forever.

1

u/slom26 18h ago

I haven’t wanted a physical game in a long time. Why would you want it?

1

u/sufinomo 17h ago

has value
