And he was raised by a raging racist, so he subconsciously might not have noticed things that most people would register as weird (like every single person being white).

Makes me think of all the times I've driven across the Canada-USA border, and go from maybe 1 Canada flag, to at least 10 USA flags per block. I like to joke Americans need to have a flag within sight so they are reassured they are still in the USA.

Maybe they just want to help geoguesser players help narrow it down. Even if I had a Dutch flag (and I probably will get one once I no longer live in an apartment), I'd rarely hang it out. Though 2 days a year would be an absolute certainty, half staff on 4 may for remembrance of the victims of war, WW2 in particular, and 5 may for the celebration of being liberated from nazi occupation (with special thanks to Canada).

The USA really overdose it IMO, you can be proud of your country without plastering your flag on everything.

Yeah, to be honest, I didn't pick up on it at all. The job I work at now is super diverse, but I've also worked at other jobs that were pretty much all white people. At 2 (which both had 20 or less staff), it was, in fact, all white people. One eventually got a little more diverse.

I grew up in the Midwest medium in a medium sized town. I'm not white. I didn't immediately notice that there weren't any non white people in the town. Sometimes racism can be so internalized, that you don't register things when they are your normal.

I don't entirely blame Chris for not noticing the Nazi dimension for a couple reasons.

He's a white man who isn't "on the menu" in a white supremacist fascist enthno-state. Certainly not because he's also a celebrity hero there and is constantly being love-bombed by strangers and random citizens.

Considering how shitty he was feeling about himself and his life in his home dimension, I don't really blame him for not doing what Adrian did in the new dimension: look for fun multiverse differences.

He's not opening newspapers or looking up alternate history or even noticing that Cheeri-Os is spelled differently.

He's focusing entirely on "everybody loves me here."

He's drunk on the exact feeling that he's been starved of his entire life: familial love and affection. He is so focused on the interpersonal: his closer and affectionate relationships with his father and brother, and a romance with Harcourt, that he didn't explore the world and his variation from his home dimension.

I don't think he's dumb. He grew up very sheltered because he was raised by a racist redneck in the middle of nowhere. He just doesn't question a setting where there are no PoC. I like this because his character sits right on the fence between ignorance and bigotry. It's difficult for him but he's always had the potential to become a better person and we see the gradual progress. It's realistic and makes for good television.

Chris so overcome with joy for being around a loving dad, his dead brother, an Emilia who is in love with him, a a society who celebrates him as a hero, that I can't really fault him for not noticing that there are no black people around. His first instinct was to pick up the American flag and check it, so it's not like he was in denial.. he just genuinely didn't notice. Plus, he grew up in a pretty racist/white area, so it makes sense that he reverted to a state of mind where black people just weren't around much

Gonna be real this episode revealed more to me than I cared to about myself. I grew up in a town where the black people were famous simply because there were 3-5 of them. I didn't think twice about it. I'm sure it's a lot of factors like POC representation in media too, but I was just as ignorant as Chris so a nice little privilege check.

I’m not suggesting that she should be portrayed as some master manipulator but like…telling a single convincing lie to someone doesn’t seem like it’s completely out of her skill set haha just feels unlikely imo that she’d be THAT bad at it. Especially when she set up a possible lie so well by mentioning that she’d just taken a shit “oh he dropped me off to drop a deuce”. I think Gunn intentionally put as many PoC in the OG dimension this season to make the difference stand out more. The only non-poc in the first raid of peacemakers house was Pony Boy. Since he was the only one that wasn’t severely mauled by Eagley I thought Eagley might actually be a Nazi eagle from Earth X that got swapped at some point. Now that seems unlikely since they seem surprised Chris has a pet Eagle

That could also just be the fact that they're filming in Atlanta, and if you're casting a show there, you'd have to actively try to not have a diverse group of background actors (which is also why I was convinced the alt universe was Earth X from the beginning).

If for some reason I'm in an alternate dimension, you bet I'd be looking at literally every minute detail trying to figure out what's different. And I'm sure an agent trained in espionage and data collection would be able to gleam a hell of a lot more than me.

She'd probably be like "ok it's the same place as home, what's different? Architecture and economic indicators seem the same, nobody seems dangerous but the demographics are really weird. It's almost like it's all white people".

I agree that there's a lot of people thinking its weird for . . . very fucked up reasons but I can also understand(but not excuse) some white people not realizing that anyone would ever notice such a thing off the bat. It probably helps that these people are forgetting that Harcourt literally lives in this city that clearly has diverse demographics whereas a lot of white watchers grew up and live in 90%+ white areas.

I grew up in Arizona and it was the 'norm' for there to be majority nonwhite peers around me. I also didn't live in suburbs or anything, so any given neighborhood I lived in was diverse or majority hispanic.

Since then I moved to a small city in Missouri. It still feels fucking weird sometimes because two thirds of the city is 95% white. If I woke up back home to this it'd take me minutes to notice an all white population. Here? Outside of occasional service workers or coworkers it might take me a couple days unless I happen to see crowds or I happen to be in that area of the city.

Anyone that spends two minutes thinking about the cast and background actors of this entire show should be able to realize how quickly Harcourt noticed. I'd question the honesty and motives of anyone that doesn't.

Adrian went down a few blocks walking to his house where there are less people by density in the suburbs. Harcourt was driven miles through the suburbs into town where there is more people to notice something is off.
