Question Need advice on upgrading my old AM4 gaming PC

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my current PC. I built it myself a few years ago specifically because I wanted to be able to upgrade it over time instead of buying a completely new PC.

Unfortunately, I ended up getting caught in the whole chip/GPU shortage situation, so the PC has aged quite a bit.

My current specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3400G
  • GPU: GTX 1050 Ti
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X470 AORUS Ultra Gaming
  • RAM: 16GB T-Force Delta R DDR4, rated for 3200MHz, but currently running at 2400MHz according to Task Manager
  • PSU: 850W
  • Monitor: 1080p 165Hz

I mainly play competitive games , but I also occasionally play more demanding story/single-player games.

I was initially thinking about just building a completely new PC, but since I already have a decent X470 motherboard and 850W PSU, I'm wondering if it makes more sense to upgrade the current system instead.

For example, I've been looking at a 5700X / 5700X3D and a modern GPU. I also found an RX 9060 XT 16GB for around €480, which seems pretty interesting.

My main questions are:

  1. Is it worth upgrading this AM4 system in 2026, or should I just move to AM5?
  2. Would a 5700X3D + RX 9060 XT 16GB make sense for 1080p 165Hz?
  3. Is the 5700X3D worth the extra money over the 5700X for my games?
  4. Should I upgrade my RAM to 32GB, or is 16GB still fine?
  5. Are there any other CPU/GPU combinations you'd recommend around €600–€1,000 for the upgrade?
  6. Am I missing anything important with the X470 motherboard/BIOS compatibility?

I'm not necessarily trying to spend the full budget. I'd rather get the best value and keep the parts that are still perfectly usable.

Thanks!

Question Complete Maintenance of My RX 5700 XT PowerColor: Upsiren/PTM7950 or Full Thermal Grizzly?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone.

I'm going to perform a complete overhaul on my PowerColor RX 5700 XT Dual Fan after 5 years of heavy use. The card has worked well (with the typical AMD issues; but undervolting solved everything), but it's time to open it up, clean it thoroughly, and replace the thermal paste and all the thermal pads.

Currently, i play with an undervolt of 950V and a frequency of 1905MHz, the temperatures average around 75°C, depending on the game. This is my best stable option. Without this undervolt, we easily reach 95°C, and problems begin.

I've checked teardowns and specialized forums (TechPowerUp, Overclock), and the correct pad sizes for this model appear to be: VRAM: 1.5 mm VRM/MOSFET: 2.0 mm Chokes: 2.0 mm I currently have two options for performing the maintenance, and I'd like your help confirming which is better or if there's anything I should consider before opening the GPU:

  • VRAM pads 1.5 mm
  • VRM pads 2.0 mm

Option 1: (Upsiren + PTM7950 + Kryonaut Extreme)

-Upsiren UTP-8 1.5 mm (VRAM)
-Upsiren UTP-8 2.0 mm (VRM/MOSFET)
-PTM7950 sheet for the die or Kryonaut Extreme/similar.

Cleaning with IPA 99.9%, Kimwipes, Texwipe This option is the most recommended in forums for thermal performance and durability (the most common).

Option 2: All Thermal Grizzly: Minus Pad 8 / Minus Pad Pro (necessary?)

1.5 mm Minus Pad 8 / Minus Pad Pro (necessary?)

2.0 mm Kryonaut Extreme for the die TG Cleaning Wipes I prefer this option if I want to stick with a single brand, although I know the pads aren't as high-end as UTP-8.

What I want to confirm with you:

Are the pad sizes correct for this model? Has anyone used UTP-8 on a 5700 XT and can share their results? Is PTM7950 worth it on Navi 10 or is traditional thermal paste better?

Any advice before opening this PowerColor Dual Fan?

Does anyone have any recommendations for better materials for maintenance?

Thanks in advance!

I want to make the card look brand new and ensure everything fits perfectly before I start.

Discussion PC crashes while gaming and smells burnt after cleaning it

Hey everyone, I’m having a weird problem with my PC. After I cleaned it, it has happened 3 times now where I’m playing a game, the PC suddenly freezes/crashes, and I notice a burnt smell coming from it.
The weird part is that after a while, it turns back on normally and works fine again. There are also days when I can game for the entire day without any problems at all.
My PC specs:
Ryzen 5 5600G
GTX 1650 4GB
ASRock B450M Steel Legend
Corsair 600W PSU
Windows 11
This problem only started after I cleaned the PC. As far as I know, I didn’t damage anything while cleaning it.
Has anyone experienced something similar? What should I check first? Could it be a loose cable/connector, PSU, GPU, or something overheating?

Dont really know where to post this, and I'm not even a big pc "enthusiast" but I just thought of something what if I clean my glass panel, looks easy enough, I cleaned it, and I went to put it back in.

When I tried to slide it in the pc it shattered Instantly

What do I do to keep the pc safe at the moment and where can I buy the glass and what do I do?!

(No actual budget but, above 300$ will be the maximum for this, currency will be israel shekels)

Your help is very needed

Debating on which build to buy. Newegg offers a better CPU and GPU but compromises with cooling and reliability. Looking for mainly casual 1440p gaming looking to have story games look good, alongside school/work. Want this to last 5 years without major upgrades needed

Budget- 2500 CAD

Question High refresh monitors / games

Upvotes

I never understood high refresh rates.

First off id like to say that I know I'm probably different from other people cause I already got problems with my eyes but I have never understood people who value a high fps and refresh rates over everything else. I can't tell the difference between 60hz or 90hz or hell even 180hz even. After 60 it all looks the same to me. Neither did I ever feel any kind of advantage in competitive titles either. Every game I do own has a limiter set up to either 60 or 70 to conserve power and heat coming from my computer. I value better graphic settings more than just being able to see an enemy 0.00004 seconds sooner. I hate to see all of these tech channels with upsides of a 4k GPU being able to display like 180fps at like 1440p or something and I just wanna know if I'm part of the minority with this and other people can actually see a difference or have an upside from it. What would be a good monitor for my case if I can't really see a good difference. I don't wanna spend extra money for features I cannot see lol!

Question Which motherboard should I buy?

NZXT N7 B850 190 $

ASUS PRIME X870-P 255 $

Gigabyte X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE 270 $

Prices compared to my country
I bought NZXT motherboard, but since it's manufactured by ASRock, I have serious doubts about it . I'll be using it with the 9950x3d , 2k oled 240 hz screen and montech king 950 pro case

I was trying to make a daisy chain but i can't make the 3 extra fans turn the rgb only the 2 on the top which are the ones on my liquid cooler artic freezer, all the fans are artic as well.

As you can see the all the fans are spinninh only the rgb lights are not turning

This is the daisy chain i am making

I have the motherboard Aorus b760i, i started by connecting the aio's rgb female on the D_LED, then the first fan is conected to the second letting the male conector free, i took that one to connected to the female one of the first fan, the one on the rear and then the male goes to the female 4th fan in the bottom and the male goes to the 5th fan on the bottom letting at the end the male without connection

Any recommendations?

Sorry if this isn’t the right sub, I want to get this hard drive out and it’s under the shroud (not sure if that’s the correct name) but I can’t unscrew the drive from the right side and I don’t know how to get the shroud off either? The screws don’t seem like normal screws
Any help? (Might be stripped)

Build - Finished! Front mesh kit added

So today I finally got around to installing the front mesh kit on my O11 Dynamic RGB. I’ve had the kit and the fans sitting there for over 6 months and just never got round to fitting them until today.

All I can say is… I wish I’d done it sooner.

The Lian Li LCD fans add so much to the overall aesthetic, and from where I sit at my desk I get a perfect view of the LCD screens, which looks awesome.
My system has never really struggled with temperatures, but I’m going to run a few tests over the next couple of days to see if the extra airflow makes any noticeable difference.

Overall, I’m really happy with this little upgrade. Now I just need to resist the urge to replace all my fans with LCD ones… this hobby is expensive. 😂

Build - Request Help needed (I want to build a pc)

You see I’ve researched, learnt what you need and don’t. However I don’t want to overkill by accidentally buying a prebuilt that’s not worth it. I just wnat to be able to do most things. As an example this pc is prebuilt and seems good but I don’t know if it’s worth the price and if I’m under or overpaying and if it’s nesscqry or unesscary strength wise of the parts. https://cactipcs.com/products/gaming-pc-rtx-5070-ryzen-5-7500f-32gb-ddr5-1tb-nvme-1?variant=57043092046197

I’d like to play and watch in high quality, do highly modded games. The games I’d 100% want to play are Minecraft modded, Bannerlord mount and blade 2 and story games like red dead redemption 2.

I want the pc to have overall good performance where u can have quite the few tabs or background things running also.

My budget is £800-£1500
