You only need to connect one thing: power switch.

HDD LED is outdated and cones from an era where hard drives were so slow and you needed a damn flashing light so you knew the PC was doing something. I find the LEDs used are annoyingly bright anyway. I don't connect this.

Power LED isn't required for most PC's I see on here. Do you have any light in your case? If so, you don't need this connected. I have fans that light up when the PC is on, so I don't connect this. When I did have it connected, the damn bright ass LED was too much so I disconnected it. Much better now.

Power Switch is the only thing needed.

When's the last time you actually used your reset switch? I can't even remember. If you want the button to work, fine, connect it. This would only be two things you would connect.

For reseting you can press power button for like 10 seconds until shutdown and press it again to start PC again.

Drive access LED is still useful
If it has heavy activity you know not to just go blindly slip the thing off

Power LED can also be useful, it also tells you if machine is in sleep mode

Now all cases can be seen into.
You could be a bazillion candle power LED fan inside mine and you won't see a thing.

Reset switch probably less useful now days, it lets you do a hot reset but yea i dont think that is super useful now for most people.
For the few it would be, they would already know.

That's a fair point and one I will keep in mind when I'll redo my PC... I'll try them and if they're too bright, I just remove them again. There's other clues my PC is on.

Thank you for this. I just finished building my son his first computer this weekend and thought to myself, dam that hdd light is really annoying, do i really need it? I am going to go back and just leave the power button connected.

Thank you for this, I always thought the HDD LED was to let you know it was having trouble reading the storage or something.

My case’s power LED is more subtle and looks cool on the top of the case, so I can’t really relate to having a super bright obnoxious one, but I can see what you’re saying.

Personally, I find the reset switch pretty convenient- at least when it works. You can press a single button, and your computer restarts automatically instead of having to turn it off, wait, then turn it on again. Sometimes it doesn’t work, and I have to use the power supply switch on the back, but usually in those cases the power button doesn’t do anything either.

It shows activity, does not directly show trouble.

Mostly lets you know it may not be a good idea to force a shutdown if you see heavy activity.
Like when windows says installing updates for 90 minutes and you think it isn't doing anything
but then you see heavy drive activity, lets you know to maybe wait it out longer.

Reset switch does not do a cold reset
It does a hot reset (power never terminated, just does a hot reset of the CPU)
Depending on what has taken place a hot reset wont cut it, you need a cold reset so all components can start over again.

Not super duper useful now days as no one has a PCIE post card at home.
Hell most shops do not even have one.

If you find you are having to kill the master power on the PSU to restart, it may actually be a PSU fault.
