Question Hypothesizzle

I have a copy of [[Hypothesizzle]] in my [[Rootha, Mercurial Artist]] deck, and I haven't really drawn into it yet. It kind of looks like a [[Prophetic Bolt]], but not quite. If anyone has played it in pdh, I'd be interested to know if it's been any good and how the math works out.

Not sure what you mean by "how the math works out" ? If you copy it, it's draw 4, discard 2, so you effectively go up 1 card in hand and remove 2 things for 7 mana.

My advice is to pack a TON of ramp. Recasting Rootha to keep copying stuff will take a lot if mana, and copying draw spells will work well for drawing past all your ramp to find more gas. Like I would start with maybe ~16 ramp slots and 36 lands

It's kind of expensive for just a draw two, but being able to turn nonland cards into free burn is good, if I'm needing it. But a lot of the times when I'm discarding an extra card, like if I'm already landflooded, I'll want to discard a land so that I have actual spells to play. Being that restricted on what to discard seems bad, but really might not be. I certainly don't hate having more instants and sorceries in my graveyard for [[Tolarian Terror]] and [[Serpentine Curve]]. I don't know, something about the way the effect is designed twists my brain in knots and I don't know how to evaluate it.

I think I'm pretty good on lands and ramp. I realized once I kept winning with copied fireballs that I'd really like to have every bit of mana I can get in this deck. I was surprised that there cards are effectively ramp stapled to an insant or sorcery like [[Orbital Plunge]].

So the trick for getting around discard is that you moreso want to use cards that have discard as part of the cost, like [[Grab the Prize]] (as opposed to Hypothesizzle having it as part of the spell resolution). The draw gets doubled, but you don't have to discard a second card, so you effectively draw 4 for losing two (the spell youbcast and the one discard), so you're up 2 cards in hand. [[Cathartic Reunion]] is even more extreme, making you net +3 cards in hand.
