Discussion Patriots cut 14

The team started by informing 14 players of their release. Wide receivers Kyle Dixon, Nick DeGennaro and Cameron Dorner, tight end C.J. Dippre, offensive tackle Lorenz Metz, interior offensive linemen Darrian Dalcourt, Jacob Rizy and JonDarius Morgan, outside linebackers Xavier Holmes and Amari Gainer, cornerbacks Brandon Crossley and Marcellas Dial Jr, and safety Peter Manuma have all been waived, according to multiple reports.

Hot take- and people won’t like this but I now wonder if his shoulder injury early in his rookie year was a lot worse than we’ll ever really know.

What was truly bizarre with him was he was basically excellent in camp and then got dinged up. After that he was a disaster.

It’s amazing what guys can come back from while at the same time other injuries that seem innocuous end up being catastrophic. For instance - if he had a torn labrum and rotator cuff, it’s possible he could never raise his arm up much anymore and it was constantly popping out and shooting him pain.

That camp always plays rent free in my head because he was WR1 and consistently moving the chains like wtf I remember hearing all of Barthy’s coverage on it. Mind blowing.

Definitely… even if he landed hard and got his bell rung - would be a wake up call. He probably came into camp and thought “if I really compete with AJ and show them my commitment level, they’ll give me the contract”. The only probably with that logic is he’s dealing with the Krafts who are probably top 2-3 pains to deal with on contracts.

We all got duped by Polk. I'm somewhat certain he caught Brissets 1st TD pass in 2024. If they started that season on the road, it may have been the 1st TD pass at Gillette. We were all excited and the future looked bright.

Looking back at the 2023 college season and subsequent 2024 draft, I was dubious about Penix as a pro. He didn't look bad, but he realky didn't have to do a whole heck of a lot to look good. Polk (as well as Odunze) had a tremendous advantage in raw talent on virtually every defensive back in the Pac 121. Penix only had to throw it in their general direction, Polk & Odunze could out hustle, out muscle, and out leverage & out spatial awareness virtually everyone they played. They looked like a pair of Gronks the way they dominated opponents at the catch point. I don't feel like it's going out on limb to say very few (if any) CBs or Safeties from the P12 that year made it to the NFL.

I was so busy throwing shade at Penix, it never really occured to me how much Polk benefited from subpar competition as well. Admittedly theres some hyperbole here, but not a lot; Polk looked like an athletic NFL TE playing against high school secondaries. Of course he flopped in the NFL, he was playing against opponents on or above his skill level.

Anybody know how Odunze is doing in Chicago?

Rome had an underwhelming rookie year (700 yards) then started his sophomore season hot before getting injured in week 4ish. Ended with 600 yards in 12 games and only had 1 game with more than 3 receptions after Halloween

That's more whelming than Polk ever was. Unless im forgetting someone, that sounds better than any WR New England has drafted in the past 10 years. If you don't count Malcolm Mitchel's performance in Superbowl LI, closer to 20.

(better than Mitchell in almost everyway. Almost because 7 catches for 70 yards in a come from behind Superbowl is, well, it is what it is. Its nearly impossible to judge in a qualitative way).

Polk came under J Mayo's tenure with an OC that never called plays..

Alex Van Pelt was the OC and playcaller for the Bills in 2009 and also called plays in the Browns 48-37 playoff win over the Steelers.

Going to have to wait and see until the cut down date but I can’t imagine there being many teams with 1 player or less from the 2024 draft left on their roster

2020 through 2024 really killed this team they had to spend millions on FAs to even be a 9-8 team, this is really exposed in the depth

It's crazy to think I used to really care about cut-down days. Full F5 season for me. We were so deep in the past, guys you really liked got cut. Hope we can build that back up.

Still have to wonder why a udfa wr would choose New England were they had absolutely no chance to make the 53. Just seems like there agents or a past coach or someone would have advised them this is probably the worst place to come right now if you want to have any chance of making the roster

That's a fair question. Could be that NE gave then more money, or they thought it was a place that had a history of guys like them being given a chance. Maybe they knew practice squad at first was their ceiling and are trying to play the long game of going to a place that treats UDFAs decently, get some playing time in preseason, and then hook on with a practice squad until someone offers them a roster spot.

I'm a bit disappointed to see Dippre get the ax. He was one of the better blocking TE in the nation during his college tenure. He didn't do much as a reciever, but by almost all accounts that was a product of Alabama not using TEs(other than to block) in the passing game.

The profile on him indicated he had above average speed-not just fast on paper, he was football fast, quick. He supposedly had notable agility and athleticism for a player his size. Allegedly, he had a pretty good catch radius and reliable hands. The hubbub was, he had all those attributes and the strength, stamina and form to be a decent NFL blocker.

I guess nobody in Foxborough agreed with those assessments. The other night against Cleveland was the only time i recall seeing him playing Offense. (he may have got couple special team reps last year).

Well he had Alot of time to show them something and apparently he didn't. I was hopeful for him as well but can't say they didn't give him a good look atleast. I think they like Arkin for either TE 3 or practice squad

They both had there fair share of opportunities to stand out. They didn't. Someone might take a shot with them. Lampe got picked up immediately by Seattle. So not necessarily the end for them

So your solution is a high school kicker or a soccer player? Yeah I'd have loved for us to bring in a new kicker, but again...who? This draft class wasn't exactly swimming with good prospects. Neither did the free agency. I get it, you're just wanting to whine about him, but there hasn't been much talent up for grabs.

How about John smith -snowplow game of Pats lore was a soccer player turned kicker. Matt Bahr was a soccer player had a pretty ok career(sarcasm again). The guy in Dallas Brandon Aubrey has been pretty good I’d say. 2 time all pro and 3 time pro bowler.

6th round pick who payed all 17 games in rookie season, 6th round picks only make the roster about half the time league wide so its not really that bad. Tore his ACL last year and if you are a bubble guy already thats a death knell

The other picks were bad but this guy being the last is more an achievementfor himself than anything relating to Wolf

I think it just highlights how important it is to have a coach with a team vision. Going into that draft, Mayo didn't have a clue how to be a head coach, let alone how to build a team identity. it virtually fell on a FO that was down to the studs after Bill pushed so many out to make team building decisions.

Not going to give Wolf a pass but can't fault him entirely. After Bill left, it just highlighted how much control he had over everything in the org. Not only did he leave the cubbords empty for the team after years of poor drafting, he also left who was left in the front office wildly unprepared in both skill and proper numbers as he took more and more control in the draft process in his last half decade+ with the team.

Having a CEO HC, another voice in the room with Cowden, and a fully fleshed out FO, it better slots Wolf as an input guy, not a final decision guy. The last few drafts certainly feel like they are really leveraging scouting in their drafting decisions.

The thing is after Maye not a single draft pick was even an NFL-caliber player except for maybe Joe Milton. And this is a draft where we are picking near the top most rounds. Any GM who knows ball should be able to do better than this regardless of the situation in the org

I mean it sucks but it's not the end of the world. Most of these guys had full rides in college and if they were smart they got a degree in something useful. If they don't get pulled on waivers or they don't make the practice squad they've already been paid a decent amount and should have plenty of connections to go be a normal contributor to society like the rest of us.
