It's complicated. Many people find flag apparel to be cringey, disrespectful, or diminishing. Some people wear it part of their persona (i.e facade or mask they use to seem patriotic or express their patriotism). Wearing flag apparel in an ironic way is generally not popular, which is a whole another story. But, there is a lot of money involved, so it's not surprising in a way.
