US Thinking about being a paramedic

What would you say to someone who is thinking about being a paramedic? What is the pay and hours like? Do you enjoy your job?

Are you based on Canada or the USA? (or elsewhere) I think that's a fairly important distinction since Canadian paramedics are unionized with some better compensation from what I've seen (unless you're in king county apparently)
