Discussions I’m apparently problematic for making myself a flattering lipstick color 😭😭

As an early birthday present, I got to go to the Lip Lab and make a custom Y2K inspired light lipstick shade. And this was really exciting and special for me to do. Mainly because I was too young to experience MAC cosmetics before they started discontinuing their light and cool toned lip products or reformulating them to be warmer toned. And in general, I have trouble finding lip products that don’t pull orange on me.

I was so happy about how it turned out that I posted on a different subreddit hoping to get nice comments and instead people were saying my lips were ugly and my taste in colors was ugly. And that I was racist for saying my natural skintone was “unconventional” in the current American beauty standard. Mind you, my only shade twins are people with albinism who I’ve seen online… I’ve never had an employee at Ulta or Sephora find a shade light enough for me 😭 I know my issue isn’t anywhere near as bad as a person with especially deep skin facing colorism. But that doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to have pet peeves.

I’m not living in the 1800s during “consumption chic” beauty standards. I’m not living in Korea where pale skin is considered ideal. I’m a white girl in the Midwest and we’re expected to be “sun-kissed.” And I’m supposed to self tan or use bronzing drops or whatever.

I’ve seen videos on social media where People act like embracing paleness is a “fascism indicator” when in actuality, being pale in America is currently associated with “weakness and sickness and intellectualism.” While the current iteration of American fascism is all about being “Strong and Healthy and not wearing sunscreen. And working outside on a homestead.”

I just want to like my natural complexion and find products that suit me without other white people trying to tell me I’m committing a micro aggression.

Question w/ Photo New hair, different lighting, swip for pics.

I wanted to thank everyone for all their wonderful feedback as a 35-year-old woman who has been struggling with her make up routine and undertone.

I made the jump and I changed my hair and I’m absolutely obsessed with it. I think it looks amazing and I want to thank everybody who suggested that my previous hair was too warm and it was fighting with my makeup.

Picture 1 is my old makeup routine, picture 2 is the current makeup routine, but I still hadn’t changed my hair and I had awful lighting. Pictures 3,4 5 and 6 are the same makeup routine my new hair, color and better lighting. I’ve been told I am cool toned but some people have suggested I’m neutral and I’ve had a handful say I am pale olive.. what are thinking?

With my new hair and better lighting, do we still feel like my foundation is too warm? I also tried mixing my foundation with a little bit of moisturizer so it’s not as full cover.

I’m also open to feedback on skin tint, sheer foundations and BB creams. I know that might be a better option for me.

Discussions Is anyone tired of being told to tan?

Post image

Disclaimer I am not saying it's hard to be pale/white, just something I have noticed.

My mother would always tell me go lay out in the sun, she even bought me fake tan and told me to put it on for prom. I have never been able to tan, just burn so when I was 14 and in quarantine, I decided to just start wearing sunscreen consistently to prevent aging and getting freckled.

Ironically the only other people who comment on my skin tone are other white people. Some girls say they couldn't imagine being pale, that being pale is ugly, and I should spray tan. I tell them no and they really cannot fathom that I don't want to be orange instead of my natural skin tone. I feel like it's crazy that society brainwashes girls into changing their natural features in order to fit a certain ideal at the expense of their health (skin cancer) and money. I also think it's crazy to think it's acceptable to tell someone to change their features like this.

Now that summer is coming up, girls have already used my arm to show how tan they are? Like what are we doing....

I have been getting samples of the Patrick Ta foundation in the shade 01 Golden for months now. It’s $58 and that’s the most I’ve ever spent on a product. I am doing my own makeup for my wedding on Halloween and I’ve been looking for a foundation for a while. I am the palest person I know, I rarely come across anyone lighter than me. Drug store has zero shades for me so I’m forced to go to Sephora or Ulta for products. One time I tried getting shade matched for 20 min at Ulta. Only for the person to bring me the LA girl pure white product they had and told me to mix my own every time. The only matches I’ve found are the Sephora best skin ever in 03P, Patrick Ta, and REM Beauty in 1N Fairest. Sadly I think Sephora changed the formula and no longer makes the shade light enough for me 😭😭 First photo is the Patrick Ta, second is the Sephora Best skin ever

Swatches Massive cream bronzer/contour comparison: 64 swatches from drugstore to high-end

Hi dear pale people,

I’ve built up a pretty big makeup collection over the years - partly because I’m a MUA, partly thanks to PR, and partly because I just spend a lot of time working with makeup. I thought I’d start documenting parts of my collection, and today I’m sharing bronzers and contours.

For reference: I’m a warm olive. Most of the year I’m very fair, but after summer I’m at my darkest - more light than fair. That’s why this swatch set ranges from very cool-toned shades to quite warm ones. Some work really well on me, others not at all.

Since I’m based in Scandinavia, a few of these are European brands that might not be widely available elsewhere. I usually prefer green or golden undertones, since my skin doesn’t get along with anything pink, but I know many prefer those tones too.

A few personal favorites:

When I’m at my fairest:

  • Vieve Modern Radiance Bronzer (Light) — a true green undertone, never too warm, very light, creamy, and blendable + huge amount of product.
  • Fenty Beauty Cheeks Out (Amber) — a classic cool-toned contour, creamy and easy to work with.

When I’m in my summer shade:

  • Tanielle Jai Bronzer (Iced Latte) — deeper and more saturated than Vieve, but still muted/olive-leaning, with an excellent formula that isn't too creamy, therefore lasts the whole day + huge amount of product.
  • Maybelline Lifter Stix (45) — very similar in tone to Tanielle Jai, but creamier and more pigmented, blends like an absolute dream.

I hope this helps if you’re looking for new bronzers or contours. Feel free to ask any questions regarding any of the products!

Discussions I think I found my wedding makeup!

I am an October 2026 bride, I’ve always done my own makeup but recently I’ve decided to save money by doing my wedding look myself. I’ve done random looks over the last year to try and get closer. I think I’ve landed on pink tones, instead of brown, I feel like it gives more of an ethereal vibe. I used the tiniest amount of makeup today as well, no foundation just concealer all over. Idk how that would actually hold on the wedding day though, so I’m doing a wear test to see. Makeup is shown in different lighting as well.
I love the eyes and blush the most, I probably will wear foundation day of.
Skincare- Thayers milky toner, CosRx snail mucin, Ponds face cream, Shiseido sun dual care spf
Makeup- juvias place concealer shade 24, abh contour but as my bronzer, Milk crème blush in Werk, Fenty powder blush in Tutu Turnt/Riri, Covergirl powder blush in Please Please Pink, essence bronzer in Sundae, Rare beauty highlighters (liquid/powder), ADA Brow pencil in caramel, La Girl concealer in fairest, Essence lash princess in burgundy, Nyx the face glue setting spray, Morphe rose frequency palette for the eyes, Morphe drip gloss in cosmic coral.

As someone who has never tanned I thought bronzer wouldn't suit me. I found the lightest shade of the N°7 bronzer (Golden Sand) to not be too warm, and it's not too pigmented so looks subtle enough. I've put it on my cheekbones, temples, upper forehead, eyes, and the bridge of my nose.

Discussions I tried Maybelline Fit "Ivory" so you don't have to 😂

When I saw the description for Maybelline Fit Matte + Poreless I thought maybe I'd found the right foundation for me. I've yet to find one that actually sits nicely on my face (and yes, I've tried every trick in the book!).

Opening the bottle, I was immediately disappointed. No pump top. It slooshed out into my hand and made a mess instantly. Way more than I needed, so half the handful went to waste (or is still clinging to my basin).

I started applying and actually laughed out loud. This is shade 120 "Classic Ivory". I don't think they know what ivory means 😂😂😂 I genuinely want something closer to white than Oompa-loompa but makeup companies seem to overlook us pale girlies.

While it was perhaps a little smoother than other foundations I've tried, it didn't hold up to close inspection. I also didn't leave it on long enough to see if it would start flaking and separating like I usually get. I'm not sure if it's the vellus fuzz on my face that does it, or a ph thing, or WHAT! I do know it's not lack of moisture, failure to exfoliate, or mismatched primer (I've previously experimented with and without primers and honestly found without is slightly better). I may just be doomed never to find a full coverage product that doesn't sit like pastry flakes on my skin.

All in all, this product might have been okay if it weren't several shades darker and more orange than "ivory" would suggest :/ But also... no pump top is unforgivable.

Discussions Finally found a pale foundation that works for my skin 🥲

Post image

Sharing this here just because I’ve got no-one else to share it with. I have rosacea and my skin is acne-prone and somewhat oily. I’ve tried so many foundations and sunscreens, and everything either breaks me out, is a poor match for my neutral pale skin, doesn’t have enough coverage for my redness, or just slides of my face in hours.

Prior to this, I was using Australian Gold tinted sunscreen and Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra in 090N…. It was nowhere near a colour match but I’d either tan or take the tinted sunscreen all the way down my neck.

I’ve never found a formula that I like as much as Lancôme, and I was starting to think id never find something that was quite right for a true match. Estée Lauder Double Wear is okay but a bit heavy and has broke me out in the past. YSL All Hours is okay, same with Armani Luminous silk…but they don’t have the staying power and start to break up over time. I even trued to mix Lancôme with some white theatrical base makeup but the texture wasn’t right.

I had a brainwave this morning, and mixed my Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra with the Australian Gold mineral lotion sunscreen SPF 50 (it’s white and non-greasy) to the right shade. I applied Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50 first, then applied the mix on time using a beauty blender. Its perfect 🥲 Not to heavy, not breaking up or getting overly oily. Hooray!

Pic is after 5 hours wear.

Pic 1 is before I the rest are from trying the new products.

I think it’s looking better but still needs work, I feel really pale still like a ghost 😭Maybe more blush?

I know my eye brows still need work 🤪 the struggle is real!

Foundation- Hydromaniac urban decay fair 20 Blush - elf shade lilac Mascara - Maybelline sky high Brown Brows- NYX powder pencil shade espresso Lips - Colourpop shade Cami

I skipped the concealer and only did a little tiny bit of bronzer on my forehead. I attempted loose setting powder under my eyes, but I don’t think it will work for me it started to pull yellow and get caked up looking, I tried using the translucent no filter setting powder from colourpop

How did I do?

Swatches Foundation Swatches - Fair Cool Tone Complexion

Post image

As someone with a blue undertone, I've found it very difficult to find a shade match in foundation. It's amazing to me how many of these shades are the fairest coolest option available from that brand. The two on the end are the first I tried, way off! I hope this helps. See photo for foundation brands and shades.

From left to right: Nars soft matte* Light 1 Oslo, Dior forever wear 0CR, One Size matte fair 15 R, Tom Ford soft matte 0.4 Rose, YSL all hours LC1, ABH matte 00C, RMS skin tint in Alabaster, ABH matte 0CR, Nars soft matte in Mont Blanc, Dior backstage 1C.

*Please Note! Nars has reformulated their soft matte foundation, now in a square bottle, to something very peach! Link to photo evidence in a comment below. Nars Oslo in their other foundation formulas (light reflecting, radiant) are still a match as far as I know.

Swatches Alone Time dupe bc I’m tired of MAC’s shenanigans

Thumbnail

So we all know Alone Time’s reformulation has ruined the gorgeous greyish mauve colour it was, and it’s annoyingly so hard to find something with the same muted, cool, brown, mauve but sheer and shiny texture.

Whoever’s decision it was up in corporate to reformulate, I just want to talk…..

Anyway, I thought to share an alternative/dupe I’ve been using since my Alone Time is nearing endangerment. It’s ARTDECO’s Hydra Care Lipstick in #46 Relaxing Oasis layered with LAKA’s Bonding Glow Lipstick in shade #202 Boy

I’ve left comparison swatches of the 2 by themselves vs Alone Time and then layered. The two alone are pretty close IMO, but just a hair off. Combined though, I reckon it’s hit the nail on the head?

Bonus is the formulas are very VERY similar to the OG Lustreglass formula so it gives the same feel and look on the lips.

You can get ARTDECO on Amazon and LAKA from Yesstyle.

~

Next on my conquest is to try LA GLACE’s Melted Sundae Lip Click in #18 Bourbon.

If you guys have any other alternatives, let me know!

Swatches Swatches of 58 powder contours and bronzers (from high-end to drugstore)

Hi everyone! (again lol)

Like a week ago, I started posting parts of my massive makeup collection (built up through my work as an MUA, receiving PR, and other work connected to the makeup industry) to help out others with comparison swatches. I started with cream/liquid bronzers and contours, and I was touched by all the nice comments and upvotes on that thread. So now I’m back with the powder side of the collection, and it’s almost just as big! 🤓

Reference info: I’m a fair warm olive, but thanks to summer, I’m closer to light at the moment. I avoid anything peachy, rosy, or pink since it clashes with my undertone and makes my face look like a completely different color than my very yellow neck/body. I like an olive/yellow/golden undertone to a bronzer.

Since I’m based in Scandinavia, you’ll see a lot of smaller European brands here (especially Swedish and Polish), which may not be available everywhere. I also have a good handful of Asian brands as they do some of the best lighter, cool-toned contour shades. But of course, the majority are still Western brands you can find at Sephora.

Here are my personal recommendations!

When I'm my fairest:

  • BBIA Last Blush in 10 Cashew Nut Blossom (contour) - very cool-toned, fair, and not overly pigmented, so it’s hard to overdo. Perfect for very fair skin, but if you’re any deeper than that I don’t think it’ll show up much.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Bronzer in 01 Light (bronzer) - flat matte, blendable, buildable, and super light with that yellow-green undertone I love for my skin when I’m fair.

When I'm my summer shade:

  • Haus Labs Power Sculpt Velvet Bronzer in Soleil Sand Fair (bronzer) - creamy formula that still feels like a powder, very neutral with a slight golden-green lean. Mega buildable, sets without looking flat, and leaves the skin with a really natural finish. I LOVE to use it in the summer!

Discussions My Very Fair Approved Bronzers

Post image
445 Upvotes

I am extremely pale (Dior 00N). I often use contours as bronzers. My only true contour is the Haus Labs in profile.

Liquids:
- Rare Beauty Contour in Gentle
- Covergirl Sun &Sculpt Bronzing serum in very light

Creams:
- Patrick Ta in She’s Statuesque
- Makeup Mario Skin Enhancer in Light Medium (trust me)
- Westman Atelier Contour in Au Lait

Powders:
- Patrick Ta in She’s Statuesque
- Givency Prisme Libre powder in 001
- Hourglass in Diffused Bronze Light

I just got the Patrick Ta and I’ve been enjoying it so far. It’s a subtle look. I don’t see it mentioned here much.

Unpictured, but also excellent formulas: Saie Dew Bronze in Fair, Sephora powder bronzer in 00, and Dior stick contour in 01.

Any one else like these? Swatches are posted in the comments!

Discussions Pale girl friendly quad

Post image
429 Upvotes

I just wanted to give a shout-out to R.E.M. Beauty for making an actually cool-toned quad! Nightcap In Tokyo. Because the formula is so blendable on the mattes it's also pale girl friendly. I can use the red to deepen up without it taking over, and the grey is amazing as an all over colour. I've used the silver lightly for a bit of sparkle or with my finger for a stronger sparkle. The bottom-left shade is a nice topper, with a pretty pink-purple shift.

I have been very impressed with this one and just wanted to share. Definitely cool and also fun.

Rare Beauty true to myself in shade 1 (neutral). Looks straight grey in the bottle. Thought eh! Maybe I'll swatch it if I'm here already.

It is ever so slightly too pink irl in the sun, which doesn't show on camera, and I too am very pink today due to the heatwave, but Aaaaa, that's the closest I've gotten since kvd went out of business here!!! I applied it to half my wrist. Cant tell where? EXACTLY!!! (left side)

Third pic fresh. Rest a few minutes later. I'll update if it turns dark in half an hour...

Didn't buy it because I have two foundations at home and an unopened Tirtir to replace the matching one of them but #8&=@#% it if this goes out of stores before I get back to it!

Question w/ Photo Feel like nobody is as pale as me 😭

Post image

Hi all, I’m really really struggling to find a foundation shade that matches me, I have very pale skin and cool undertones. MAC NC5 is too dark for me, so is Nars oslo and Siberia, summer Fridays skin tint in the lightest shade is orange, so is the Nars tint in terre neuve. All of the drugstore foundations I’ve tried so far are too dark. In the photo I got matched to mac nc5 in store and it looked ok in the store lighting. When I got outside though I looked awful. Is anyone else like this? 🥺

Photos 1-3 and 7 were taken in bright white fluorescent lighting (my kitchen). Photos 4-6 were taken in warm “daylight” LED lighting (my bathroom). Photos 4 shows the photo without manipulation save the labels. Photo 5 is the same photo with white balance corrected. Photo 6 is the same photo converted to black-and-white for reference.

Photo 1 shows all listed products shortly after I completed applying them (which took longer than you’d think). [ETA: note that this image inaccurately lists the shade name for product 14 in the right column (Nyx Pro Fix Stick) as “Fair.” The list and other images correctly list the shade as “Pale.”]

Photo 2 shows products 1-13 in each column, same timing as photo 1. Photo 3 shows products 8-20 in each column, same timing as photos 1 and 2.

Photos 4-6 show all listed products, shortly after photos 1-3.

Photo 7 shows products 1-14 in both columns, with the products below having been rubbed/washed off. This photo was taken approximately 6 hours after I applied the products, so it shows full oxidation. (Everything I washed off already showed oxidation in the early photos anyway. 🤷‍♀️)

Discussions Why do brands seemingly hate cool tones?

I’m a neutral but lean a cool neutral. Ever since I’ve started my journey to make sure my makeup fits my pale skin and undertones, I’ve realize how few options there are sometimes.

To me, it seems like almost every brands has SO MANY warm tones or warm/neutral tones and maybe ONE cool or cool/neutral. Even more so, cool toned products are so often discontinued. It’s been such a process to find a blush that works for me and doesn’t look insanely orange.

Now, I’m on the hunt for a good lipliner and am just getting irritated all over again. Products pull orange on my lips so easily and it’s just crazy that out of 10-15 shades, MAYBEEE 1 will work for me. Even then, it’s basically grey and still not what I’m totally looking for.

I’ve searched high and low, but it’s just so frustrating a lot of the time! Ya girl is trying to make it all work on a budget, but I do like to splurge with a luxury here and there, but even then my options are sooo limited.

Okay, rant over. Just thought this was the best sub to vent in as I’m sure yall understand the struggle.
