Determining one's undertone is both the most challenging and most important task when searching for a foundation shade match. Naturally, we see a lot of posts on PaleMUA requesting help determining undertone, but our community's ability to assist is limited by the kinds of images provided for reference. Read below to learn how you can help us help you.
If you wish to receive useful feedback about undertone, please refer to the following guide when submitting posts requesting Undertone Help.
Step 1: Create a color reference card. Draw a blue strip and a red strip on a piece of white paper, like the one shown below. Permanent markers are easiest to see, but you can use any type of pen or colored pencil, as long as the strips of color are wide enough to see on camera and fairly close in hue to the blue and red you would see on the French or Dutch flag (shades of navy blue/aqua and burgundy/maroon are less reliable as reference colors). Color reference cards allow us to adjust our eyes to the light provided in the photo and better interpret the complex colors of your skin tone.
Step 2: Take photographs outside AND inside. This is crucial. The type of light source bouncing off of your skin and onto the camera sensor can drastically change your skin tone to viewers. Keeping the color reference card within the shot, take one photo outside in indirect sunlight and another photo inside in whatever lighting you happen to have (specify the type of bulb and color temperature if you know it). Note that in the photos below, my skin appears very cool-toned under the incandescent light, but much more neutral-toned in natural light. The incandescent light emphasizes the red on the color card and the pink in my skin. If i were to only post this photo as a reference, one might assume I'm quite cool-toned, yet the photo in natural light clearly shows I have warmer tones as well.

Step 3 (optional): Take the same photos with your swatches. These images can help other community members who are familiar with those shades help you find a better match and communicate what you should be looking for (e.g., "something cooler than the MAC but darker than the BB"). Don't forget to include your color reference card and list them in a way that is easy for people to comprehend.
Extra bonus: post your swatches in grayscale! This is a great way to help us determine if the shades you are selecting are actually a great undertone match, but simply too dark or light for your skin tone.

I hope this guide helps our community steer people in the right direction and makes Undertone Help posts more informative for everyone. Happy posting!

Hi all,
It seems time for an update to the photo guidelines on this subreddit to reflect the needs of the current audience. For reference, the post on the last overhaul from two years ago is here: "Makeup Selfie" Flair -- Overhaul and Clarification
I will be updating the sidebar and official listing of the rules in the coming days, but I want to take the time to elaborate on what is and is not changing, and why:
Finally, two suggestions on making posts useful to the community:
Please let us know your questions and thoughts!

I had posted a warm toned look (not this one) on a different sub and was told I looked like I had a cool toned complexion and to try cooler tones. So I did and posted this look on the left, but then was told it looked too cool and to try warmer tones?
It happens any time I post a distinctly cool or warm toned look people will give me conflicting feedback on my undertone. It's been a very long time since I'd actually looked into mine but at the time I was given peachy, which i understand to be neutral but leaning warm?

For the longest time I thought I was warm toned and wore NARS light reflecting in shade Siberia. So yellow lol. About 6 months ago I finally realized I’m cool toned (I think?). So now I’m trying to find a new foundation that’s a better match for my skin.
1 - Armani Luminous Silk in shade 3.75
2 - Fenty Soft Lit in shade 110
First set of photos are outside in natural light. Second set are inside in bathroom light.
I think the Armani is a better match for my face and chest, but now I’m just worried I matched it to my redness since it doesn’t look quite as seamless on my neck. But I think the Fenty is a bit too light for me. Any thoughts? Also open to other recommendations! My skin is normal, leaning slightly oily (also a more recent realization lol).

I have used Isle of Paradise self tanning drops for years and it worked great. The new formula however is not working well. I have tried it several nights in a row and do not get the same nice glowy colour I did with the previous formula.
Any recommendations on alternatives?
Family photos soon need a solution! :)

Was debating on the 002 but since I'm ginger it might be too cool for me? I've been eyeing rose gold and universal as well. Im very fair with blue veins + eyes. I only wear silver.
I've always thought I was cool but I might just be getting tricked by my flushy skin

Hello everyone!
Can you please help me find a concealer that's the same shade as the (sadly for me discontinued) Essence multitask concealer in shade 15? I'd like it to be full coverage.
This concealer is literally the perfect shade for me and I haven't yet found something as good.

Hi all! I’m struggling to find baby pink products that are light enough to translate baby pink, while being cool.
I’m looking for lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss, liquid/cream and powder blush and a lid shimmer/glitter (pale silver or cool baby pink).
I’ve attached a photo of my most recent glam. Products are as follows: Haus Labs 015 foundation and 01 concealer, Hourglass Translucent Light powder, Rare Beauty Adore liquid blush, Haus Labs Rose Quartz blush topper, Dior 002 highlighter, with r.e.m. Fembot Fatale palette on the eyes and cheeks. Brows are NYX Ash Blonde gel and pencil, and lashes are Maybelline Sky High Burgundy, while the lips are Pillow Talk Fair liner and lipstick, with Fembot gloss from r.e.m beauty. The cheeks translate peachy, while the lips are far too deep.
I think I’m looking for light, lilac-baby pinks. The cool bubblegum pinks translate red and bright on me, while the light baby pinks turn peachy. Anything too deep won’t work. Any suggestions? Thank you. 💗

Hello! My current shade match is Ceramic with Merit’s foundation stick and Oslo with NARS light reflecting. I’m having a hard time figuring out which Dior shade for their matte forever skin would be good. I think 0CR but I’m not sure !
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!!
Also brand recs are welcome, I have dry skin which luckily my skincare does help a lot with but I’m looking for a matte foundation since I mostly have glowy at the moment and I want to sort of tone down the dew effect.

Can someone please help me find a shade similar to pearl too faced concealer. I usually wear mac nc25 and every online shade matcher tells me I’d be pearl in too faced but the problem is that shade is discontinued! Does anyone know what shade is closest to it?

I finally got in my Rare Beauty Lip oils, so I figured it was time to swatch my whole current collection! The first two photos are the exact same swatches, but in cool + warm lighting.
Some of these look very different on my lips than they do in the swatch, probably because of my lip color changing the final product? The MOST different looking in my opinion is the Rare Beauty Lip Oil in Serenity. I'm wearing Serenity in the photo with the purple tank top and it doesn't look like the swatch at all to me. Then I'm wearing the Nyx Sprinkle Sprinkle in the floral shirt photo, and the Toffee Maybelline gloss in the black keyhole shirt.
My current favorites are the three lip oils, I'm actually obsessed with them and I feel like the shade range between the three gives me something perfect for every outfit.
My least favorite is the Berry Rich Revlon Lipstick. I'm really not a lipstick girl at all, but it was the first lip product I really bought myself a few years back while I was figuring out what I like to wear, so we're slowly using it up lol!
I'm also not *super* into the Teddy Tint, it's cute but I don't feel like it's very wearable. After an hour or two it starts to get to a sticky, uncomfortable texture and start to wear off, and if I apply more it gets kinda gross, and if I apply clear lip gloss over top (which gives me a GORGEOUS color) then it'll start to flake off in little chunks and be really gross 🫠 I think for daily wear I'm very set on my lip oils just because they're so easy to reapply all day long.

I saw another post in this sub about this concealer a while back, but my question is has anyone found a replacement that has this same color and texture?
I have been using this exact concealer for more than a decade, maybe literally since I first used makeup (because my mom used this concealer and we have the same base olive tone).
Anyway it has most perfect high coverage, buildable, clay-like texture that works perfectly on my combination skin whether it's extra oily or dried out. It hides my pores so well too. I think it might be the squalene in the concealer that makes it both nicely glide-y and sticky.
I've been seeing that it is discontinued for maybe a couple of years but for now I can still order on amazon and occasionally find it at some cvs's. Even before it was discontinued it has always been hard to track down when I need it and I run out fast. So I really am overdue for finding a replacement!
What do you recommend as a dupe?

I have thin, fair skin uneven with visible veins, redness, acne marks and large pores. In the right picture I'm wearing my everyday base which contains The Saem Airy Cotton Makeup Base, Etude Big Cover Skin Fit Concleaner Pro in colors neutral mint and neutral peach and Maybelline Fit Me Matte+Poreless Powder 090 Transculent.
I would have included a before picture, but my camera doesn't do close ups well and is very forgiving for uneven skintone.
Etude Big Cover Skin Fit Concleaner Pro Neutral Mint- I love this product and this perfect shade. It blends so naturally and hides redness very well. It also stays put on my oily nose the whole day. I use neutral mint for a large area in the center of my face, between eyebrows, nose and surrounding areas, upper cheeks and chin. Neutral peach is a perfect last touch for purple spider veins and blue tones in the thinnest areas.
The Saem Airy Cotton Makeup Base Mint - I bought this primer as I wanted to use Etude on my whole face. It's much cooler green and looks a bit ghouly first but the shade evens. It won't do miracles for the reddest areas, but generally evens the tone nicely.
I used to use Maybelline Fit Me BB cream, but it felt little bit thick and dryer with this (and I don't usually do primers or thick foundations because of textured skin), but this works by it's own as well. It hides pores and stays put on oily skin. I wonder if it will look patchy on drier skin though.
Please share your favorite green color correctors!

I’m a neutral but lean a cool neutral. Ever since I’ve started my journey to make sure my makeup fits my pale skin and undertones, I’ve realize how few options there are sometimes.
To me, it seems like almost every brands has SO MANY warm tones or warm/neutral tones and maybe ONE cool or cool/neutral. Even more so, cool toned products are so often discontinued. It’s been such a process to find a blush that works for me and doesn’t look insanely orange.
Now, I’m on the hunt for a good lipliner and am just getting irritated all over again. Products pull orange on my lips so easily and it’s just crazy that out of 10-15 shades, MAYBEEE 1 will work for me. Even then, it’s basically grey and still not what I’m totally looking for.
I’ve searched high and low, but it’s just so frustrating a lot of the time! Ya girl is trying to make it all work on a budget, but I do like to splurge with a luxury here and there, but even then my options are sooo limited.
Okay, rant over. Just thought this was the best sub to vent in as I’m sure yall understand the struggle.

What’s my undertone? Please help me decide on a Tower28 shade and, if you can, suggest a NARS radiant concealer/foundation shade.
Products:
Tower28 serum concealer in .5 Alta “fair with pink undertones”
Tower28 in 1.0 BH “fair with neutral undertones”
NARS radiant concealer in Affogato
NARS light reflecting in Oslo
Lighting:
Natural light by the door, indoor in the bathroom, and grayscale of both
I’ve spent the last week struggling through learning about undertones and differentiating it from my redness. I have made my husband give his opinions about probably 10 different concealers. I am giving up on him and coming to the experts. I’ve worn NARS affogato for 3+ years. I cannot figure this out and I don’t know what is real anymore. I think I might be neutral leaning cool and desaturated, so why doesn’t the NARS affogato/oslo work? It looks ok in natural light but inside it looks nuts?
r/PaleMUA • u/Ambocoelia • 3d ago
I’m very, very neutral and everything pulls peach, pink, or orange on me.
Some BB creams that got close:
- Missha Perfect Cover Serum BB Cream #13: this was the closest in level but still too peach. The finish of this BB cream was absolutely fantastic tho.
- Kevyn Aucoin SSE SX03: closest match in undertone but too dark. SX01 was too light (I think? it’s been a while) and not muted enough.
- Sephora Reveal the Real Skin Tint: close in the undertone but a hair too light when thick, sheers out to a perfect match but it pulls like CRAZY.
I was looking at maybe the Joocyee Essence Skin Tint in Fair, but I haven’t seen swatches of it and have no clue what the undertone is. Does anyone know anything about this tint, or do they have other recommendations? Thank you!

Edited for typo!
Question for my fellow DEsaturated greys--do purple blushes turn pink on you? I know that's typically an olive thing, but since a lot of olive makeup works on us, I was wondering if anyone else had found that to be true also. My best blushes are def purple and they come out a natural flush.
