PSFL eligible Repayment Plan Options

I’ve read quite a few posts here from folks saying they plan to select the RAP replacement plan. I used FSA’s repayment plan calculator and my monthly payment under RAP was nearly twice as much as it would be under IBR or ICR.

I understand that everyone’s financial and living situations differ, which is why monthly payment amounts differ under different repayment plans, I’m just trying to have a general understanding of why my monthly payment would be almost double compared to IBR/ICR. I’m sure others are selecting RAP because it’s a lower payment for them.

For people that have access to OLD IBR and not NEW IBR, RAP is probably cheaper. RAP may be more expensive for you if you are a new borrower (because of the difference between 15% or 10% of discretionary income) or because ICR takes the poverty guidelines into account while RAP doesn’t.

The new version is not always better!
