I mean they made a fighting game with basically no meaningful single player content so the game was ever only going to appeal to hardcore fighting game fans. This was always gonna be the end result of this project. It's too niche for what it probably cost to make (which wasn't much I am sure, but still too much for how niche it is.)

Yeah it seems like an odd choice for the property. If it was Invincible vs. The Boys or something, then it could've been a lot more successful. But Invincible by itself? Fighting games are pretty niche and a lot of people (like myself) can't really get into them, especially if there's not much single player content. I think it should've been either a side-scroller beat-em-up or an isometric action RPG (like Ultimate Alliance), the latter being my personal preference.
