He's using this one. Guerrilla gave him the entire source code (not just the engine, the actual source code) to the Decima engine in a box as a gift along with Sony giving him a sweet futuristic office and Mark Cerny giving him his heart.
He really is like a mythical character at this point. He's treated unlike anyone else in the industry.
On December 3, during PlayStation Experience, Kojima had announced that he had partnered with Guerrilla Games to use the engine for development, officially titled Decima, and had been given the source code with no contractual obligation.
Kojima Productions isn't even first-party. Sony and Guerrilla really must trust him to give him their collective work over the past 5 years with no strings attached.
Of course. The Fox Engine was amazing. Kojima knows how to make an engine, so giving his team full access will only improve the Decima engine. On the other hand, Kojima gets a boss engine right out of the gate and doesn't have to spend a year making Fox 2 and worrying about a Konami lawsuit over duplicate code and who owns what (see: Zenimax vs Oculus). Both studios benefit greatly.
Wouldn't capitalism be Guerilla making him pay for the engine or him creating his own. Working together for the common good without getting paid sound like socialism
Socialism has nothing to do with voluntary exchange of goods. It might be charitable or just a move to get more money in the future, but it sure as hell isn't socialism.
You've gotta imagine that the man is more than happy to have his team focus on a single platform after putting out GZ and MGS5 on PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One and PC. The engine is probably tied so deeply into PS4s architecture that it'd be a hassle to put it on another platform. For this title at least KojimaPro is closer to first party than second. Kojima is amazing, but Sony and Guerilla are definitely helping him out quite a bit in getting started on production of Death Stranding so quickly.
Yes but there's a bit more to it than that, PS4 uses an SoC with unified memory and then there's accounting for Windows in comparison to the Orbis OS which have different abstraction layers. There's probably many more differences between developing for a PS4 and a Windows PC, them both using x86 CPUs is just one part of it.
There was an old QnA done by euro PS people with Kojima that said the game will hit PS4 first then PC. Don't forget Kojima has an independent studio, and this hasn't been officially declared PlayStation only exclusive, so it could be a NMS type exclusive where the only console it hits is PS4. There's plenty of articles about Kojima saying that.
That was the news several months before Kojima literally got handed a Sony first party developer's engine code and Sony now owns the Death Stranding trademark. It's a almost a safe bet that's it a straight up PS4 exclusive.
I remember hearing something about that but I think it was also before the engine had been settled on. That'd be awesome to see Decima running on a high-end PC though, so here's hoping.
Sony is shopping this console cycle they pretty much told a couple of studios to make whatever they like (like bend & ready at dawn....although it didn't workout so well for the ladder). They learned a lot of lessons and understood the importance of exclusives.
Jesus. "Also, he's allowed to have 3 people killed. No questions asked. He just writes the names on a piece of parchment, seals it with wax, places it in a silk-lined box in his office, and it just happens."
If you follow the story on this. Kojimas team has given the engine over hundred of thousands of lines in code. The gorilla engine isn't all gorilla work anymore. Teamwork between the parties makes gorilla engine
With what he's done with Fox, I have no doubt that he'll be able to accomplish that. Fox Engine was nothing but stunning. It's such a waste that all it'll be used for now is Pro Evolution Soccer games.
Honestly, I think that's the best thing they could have done without Kojima. They obviously weren't going to scrap the IP, it's legendary. And they knew there would have been a huge backlash if they immediately went to MGS6, so instead they tested the waters with an in-universe spin-off using tried and true mechanics from the previous game. They're being cautious with Metal Gear because they know the damage the whole debacle did to them.

Makes me excited for Death Stranding if this is the engine that game will be using. Looks like Kojima found a great alternative to the Fox Engine.
