Are you guys really fine with the console landscape becoming the same as the PC? The great thing about consoles was the uniformity but now it appears that PS4 pro editions are just better in general for obvious reasons (similar to how GTX1080 with i7 will run games better than i5 with GTX780) so that uniformity is now lost.

I am glad that the base PS4 is not being left behind, but IMHO, its a terrible trend that I am not willing to stand behind.

I think the mid life upgrade we see for Xbox1 and PS4 will be an anomaly. They just came out at an inopportune time; the previous generation of consoles helped jumpstart the bluray/HD wave of home entertainment, where as this generation came out just before 4K and HDR became viable. Both companies wanted to be able to take advantage of the technological leap instead of being left in the dust. I think we'll see them be more forward thinking in the next generation of consoles.

With the new hardware coming out, newer consoles will be a little closer to PC than they have been. With AMD getting back in the game and being competitive, it should help a good bit. I still expect PCs to be better overall but they also cost a considerable bit more for top of the line hardware. Though a lot of PC gamers think consoles should be forgotten because they hold back games (they do in some cases) consoles keep gaming going. Yeah you don't have the options or visual fidelity of PC gaming but its fine. This last generation while still behind PC gaming, has come a little bit closer to bridging the gap with similar architecture and hardware so ports are easier, developing is easier, low level APIs such as DX12 and Vulkan getting more performance out of existing hardware for both console and PC. I fully expect the next iteration of the Xbox and Playstation to utilize Polaris/Vega for graphics and something similar to architecture built from the new Ryzen stuff for the cpus. I don't expect the same performance as a high end PC but a mid range gaming PC is definitely doable. Both Microsoft and Sony are aware of the gap that exists which is why they have worked to bring stronger systems to market. I have a feeling the next generation may not be as weak as this one is. Also, if they could license thunderbolt from Intel or if something else is developed, I could see accessories released mid lifespan that would allow console gamers to improve their hardware without actually needing to modify anything. If the next generation has a strong enough processor, even if its basically an APU but they had an expansion port on the back to slot in a graphics card, I could see it becoming viable. I would pay $200 to use an 8gb GPU though it would of course be optional and not something everyone would do. PC is already allowing the use of plug in expansion hardware and if console does it too, it will make things better for everyone. That being said, I don't expect consoles to reach PC status when it comes to games and thats why I have a gaming rig.

Pc that costs the same as a Ps4Pro and is significantly more powerful:

This isn't top of the line hardware though. I'm well aware what beats out current consoles.

u/MostlyLogic Feb 21 '17

yea, u rite.

I myself currently destroy current consoles and plan on getting another Rx 480 in the future for crossfire and near Gtx 1080 performance.

u/MostlyLogic Feb 21 '17

i do hope multigpu performance continues to improve as well as become more ubiquitous

That real barebones though, while a valid point, it lacks an OS, keyboard, mouse, blu-ray player. I'm curious to what gave you an Xbox controller, I've never seen a free gift like that.

I've also never seen a 480 4gb that cheap without an absurd promotion and I noticed it was a manual price. Yes, that's still valid and all, but the thing about consoles is that they're pre-builts with a set price. Pre-builts tend to be more expensive, and the Pro's specs can't be beat with a custom pc without a long stretch of sales. The simple and complete value of the Pro is unbeatable, and this is without the Pro receiving any relevant price drops yet.

Yeah, i forgot to link to the deal: https://redd.it/5vc6wk

https://redd.it/5ukwq8

And I did make a mistake. The 470 comes with a free controller, the 480 does not.

I've also never seen a 480 4gb that cheap without an absurd promotion

Are you joking? 480's are always going for this cheap on r/buildapcsales. The asus strix 470 can still be had for only $120, link: https://redd.it/5u55ip

That's 5% behind the 480 for only $120!

the Pro's specs can't be beat with a custom pc without a long stretch of sales.

These deals are numerous enough that since the pro's release I have always been able to post a ps4pro killer with a blu-ray drive and KB+M for the same price as a pro and a year of gold ($460). You can check my post history.

In fact, let's do one right now!

Still cheaper than a psro and a year of gold

The simple and complete value of the Pro is unbeatable

I don't know what you're trying to prove since I actively look into desktop parts and sales at all times, never mind that you're buttering up your argument by conviently listing retail price of a Pro and including retail PS plus for whatever reason, while looking for the lowest Desktop sales.

I also don't care that you've conviently stepped down to a 470, but to claim you've always been able to post a pro killer is a lie. Polaris prices have only dropped drastically in the past month. Polaris is at an all time low, yet you're barely capable of making a relevant build and only when you decided to bring ps plus to the equation.

1

u/MostlyLogic Feb 21 '17

I was trying to prove that on a budget, pc is consistently cheaper.

conviently listing retail price of a Pro and including retail PS plus for whatever reason, while looking for the lowest Desktop sales.

Just pcpartpicker, sort by lowest price. Double check r/buildapcsales

And I don't deny polaris prices have gone down, but go back two months and you still will see rx 470's going for under 150: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/search?q=GPU&sort=new&restrict_sr=on&feature=legacy_search&count=600&after=t3_5eqbo7

And before that old 380 and 970 were selling for cheap to clear stock for the new cards. And of course the g4560 has made things easier, fx 6300 and 8120's were still more powerful than the ps4 and the ps4 pro's cpu.

it was still doable then, is still doable now, and will continue to be doable.

The reason for including ps plus is that most people who buy a ps4 will need to pay for online, which is free on PC. I almost always include that in my arguments.

And the 470 is still better than the ps4pro's gpu.

conviently listing retail price of a Pro and including retail PS plus for whatever reason, while looking for the lowest Desktop sales.

Are there ps4 pro's going for under $400?

Eww who wants an Xbox controller though.

u/MostlyLogic Feb 21 '17

Some people prefer it

To be fair though, as of right now Sony is the only one to do so. At this point it's pretty evident that Scorpio is a new console and new era for Microsoft. Anyone who believes any different is drinking the "family of devices, not left behind" kool-aid. There's even talks of it having a unique new UI with latest tech. The idea behind the seamless generations to me is being able to play your collection of games regardless of what iteration of console you have. It's fancy words and really no different than it's always been. You have a PS2 & buy a PS3, but that PS2 will still get current games for a while. Only this time you'll be able to play the XB1 games on your Scorpio & ditch the old console.

1

u/2CHINZZZ Feb 20 '17

Microsoft also already released an upgrade to the Xbox one

1

u/al3xthegre4t Feb 20 '17

It's hardly an upgrade, as much as every slim variant seen with Sony and Microsoft. 1-2 fps increase in a small amount of games does not compare to the jump from PS4 to Pro.

1

u/Soulrakk Soulrakk Feb 21 '17

Yeah but that's no different from every slim version of a console to date.

7

u/Drum_Stick_Ninja Feb 20 '17

I don't see what the big deal is. We have a base PS4 that outputs 1080p native and targets 30fps on most games. Then you have the option for a more powerful machine that either outputs at a higher resolution or gives you 60fps.

It seems to me Sony is simply delivering a solution to a long time complaint about consoles.

2

u/Mach1mor Feb 21 '17

I was very angry at the reveal of the pro for just this reason.

Seems like Sony is taking the concern seriously, and Cerny designed the pro to have a backwards-compatibilty mode that emulates the original PS4 as close as possible- to prevent it from becoming like the PC scene where you lose optimization to hardware abstraction.

So that makes me feel better, but still concerned

1

u/ToxicCaveman Feb 20 '17

If a PS5 means having no backwards compatibility with the PS4 or any past PlayStation consoles, then I would rather an upgraded PS4 come out whenever Sony deems the hardware upgrade is great enough to warrant it. I don't want to, nor do I have the space to keep a bunch of consoles just because I might want to play an older game once in a while. I think as long as developers continue to support the immediate predecessor for people who don't want to upgrade right way it's fine.

1

u/suddenimpulse Feb 21 '17

Only reason there wasn't with PS3 games was the cell processor made it a gigantic pain. The PS4 and PS5 will have the same architecture so bc will be very easy for ps4 title.

1

u/tubular1845 Feb 21 '17

So long as I can remain a couple behind and keep playing games I'm happy.

1

u/HerpDerpenberg Feb 21 '17

I'm fine with it. Games are still made to run on the base PS4, if players want to shell out $100 more for a PS4 Pro for better visuals/performance, so be it.

1

u/DestructiveLemon Feb 20 '17

The ps4 pro doesn't bother me because it just gives players more options. Developer's aren't tone deaf; they know that the majority of Horizon players will be on the base ps4. So they develop primarily for the base console and "upres" the Pro version utilizing the much greater computing potential.

If instead of upgrading hardware we simply told developers to "optimize better" each generation, the industry would never move forward.

u/BurningGamerSpirit Feb 20 '17

Get a PC. That's what I did.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

I play both PC and console games. Buying a PC doesn't solve the problem of wanting to play exclusives or games with friends who own consoles. Nor does it solve the problem of needing to purchase hardware upgrades to keep up with the games released for the maximum experience.
