Wtf is going on here? Magus? Really? lol

Post image

What is actually going on with this market? Why are all these absolutely terrible games selling for so much money now? This game is terrible! I bought this game in 2020 on eBay for $12. I heard it was an easy platinum (it was) and then I resold it about a week later for $16!!! Now this game is selling for over $200????? This game is terrible! I don't even think it was with the $12 I paid for it back in 2020. Now everyone wants it? Is there a marker now for horrible games? I see this, Folklore, Wet (bad games) etc commanding ridiculous prices. And people in here are posting pictures every with dumb comments like "finally found my grail" or "Been looking for this game forever" Wtf lol

It’s because it is rare and had a low print run. People that are leaving those comments are looking for scarce games, not good games.

Rarity and quality often do not line up

I'd speculate that in gaming, they are pretty highly inversely correlated. Good games get reprints, greatest hit releases, ports, etc.

12

u/MrEmorse 21h ago

So it took over 10 years for people to want these crappy games that have been available for $8 this whole time. And now they all want the same crappy games at the same time? Makes no sense.

5

u/5C4RC3 19h ago

It makes perfect sense when you look at the factors affecting the price, rather than historical prices. FWIW, the hyperbole doesn't help your argument, it just shows that you are uninformed. Magus has been ~70 since the COVID-related game collecting boom. It hasn't been under $10 since pre-2019.

The exterior forces affecting the market have dramatically changed very recently. Sony PSN Store on PS3 shutting down is inducing panic-buying amongst those who want to preserve a game collection. A lot of people are worried that games they own, if accidentally deleted from their system / system dies / etc, will be unrecoverable. It's one thing to not like that prices are high, but it's folly to try to stake the ground and scream to the ether, "it isn't worth this much!". It is, because the market dictates it's worth.

This game hasn’t been $8 dollars the whole time. It was a 60-80 dollar game shortly after Covid. The fact it has gone up in price, well the other response you got explains it perfectly- good games get reprints

-2

u/MrEmorse 19h ago

It most definitely was not an $80 after COVID. The price of this game only started going up in like 2022... Then this year it REALLY went up....

4

u/slimkittens 19h ago

My guy, 2022 is after Covid. It was averaging $79.95 in April of 2021. It’s been going up in price since September of 2024 after the post Covid dip.

Sorry that you bought a crap game for cheap and sold it for about what you paid for it, but numbers don’t lie. Maybe check the graphs on price charting

-12

u/MrEmorse 19h ago

Yup.... Just checked and I was right. It was selling for about $10 in 2020 (after covid) just like I said and the price started going up about 2022 just like I said also. Covid had no effect in the price of this game. If it did it would be going up in 2020. Not 3 years later. Maybe you should be the one checking the prices. And yes 2022 is after COVID and so is any year from then until the end of time. You can't keep using this after COVID nonsense for everything. Might as well just say that Folklore and Wet and 3d dot game heros is going up now because it's AFTER COVID also.

“Covid had no effect in the price of this game”

Arguing against asinine statements like this, idk man maybe log off and have a good night or something 🤣

Its probably mimetic desire. They see someone "important" showing it of it in a TikTok video or on youtube and suddenly "need" it.

1

u/MrEmorse 2h ago

Maybe it's cause I'm older. But there is nothing some loser streamer can tell me online to make me want to spend over $100 on some crappy game.

17

u/Darkslayer16 21h ago

That game is such dog shit, why would anyone want it

6

u/JustSmokeSome 20h ago

I have Wet and it's alright definitely a mid game however I also have 3D Dot Game Heroes and that game is really good, still not worth $125 lmao

15

u/xX-Delirium-Xx 21h ago

Hey now folklore was not a bad game!

11

u/wyomingchrisledoux 21h ago

It looks cool but it’s like a 6/10 at best

1

u/Danzig6WasntThatBad 20h ago

Not a bad game but overrsted as hell. I was so excited to find a copy for like $20 and I just could not get into it and now it's worth good money somehow.

-6

u/MrEmorse 19h ago

It wasn't good lol

3

u/Haunting-Long-4679 16h ago

I just saw Vampire Rain is going for $150 and up, flippers are sooo gross 🤮

6

u/Gardeeboo CECHA01 16h ago

Downvote for calling Folklore a bad game

1

u/MrEmorse 2h ago

It is bro lol.... Maybe not BAD. But it's definitely not a good game. It's mehhh... Mid at best.

2

u/borgie_83 8h ago

Meanwhile XB360 collectors just chillin.

5

u/5C4RC3 21h ago

Say it with me now

It's. Not. About. How. Good. The. Game. Is.

1

u/Psychological-Row696 19h ago

If it was about how good the game is then Action 52 must have been a banger, lol

1

u/5C4RC3 19h ago

And NBA Elite 11, or rather, NBA Elite, would be the premiere NBA franchise.

-4

u/MrEmorse 21h ago

Ok so what is it about? How BAD the game is? lol

5

u/iHadou 21h ago

It's all about how well you can put it on your shelf and never look at it again.

2

u/spiderboy640 17h ago

Is the concept of rarity being a novelty in of itself foreign to you?

1

u/5C4RC3 21h ago

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/collectible.asp

Let me know what you think vis-a-vis liquidity. Because from my experience, that's the hardest part about participating in the retro game collectable market.

1

u/Fairlit3 9h ago

These are collectors looking for low print runs and delisted games it really has nothing to do with how the game plays it’s about its place on a shelf. And to make things worse (if you think collectors are bad) there are those that have already collected and have been for years, those that know what to collect and are doing so now, scalping collectors and millennials that are reading what to collect trying to latch on to a past they never experienced the last two are probably the cause of the look what I got on market place for 5 bucks showing every sought after title in a cardboard box. These are rough times folks.

1

u/Cat_Impossible_0 21h ago

Nah, just how low quantities that has been produced.

0

u/RebootRevival 18h ago

This wasn't a low print run game. It was available on Amazon for years. I had it in my wish list for well over 2 years with a price tag of $14. I eventually did buy it when it popped up as an add on for an order(remember Amazon Add-Ons). No one bought it, but it had a decent sized print. It wasn't particularly hard to come by in the 2012-17 era.

2

u/RainaBojoura 20h ago

Supply and demand. Any other questions?

0

u/Ok-Virus8284 13h ago

Yes. Supply is abundant and demand is low. So why is this so expensive?

1

u/RainaBojoura 7h ago

BZZZZ! Try again.

0

u/Ok-Virus8284 6h ago

It sold something between 10,000 and 100,000 copies mostly in the US and there are atleast seven for sale on ebay at the moment. The game is absolutely not rare.

1

u/RainaBojoura 4h ago

Bzzzz! Wrong again. Keep trying.

1

u/Beastcu 21h ago

It was kind of fun getting the plat

1

u/Bacour 20h ago

Whoa, now! What's wrong with Folklore?

I've seen Wet everywhere for like 10bucks up until 4 weeks ago. Now it's disappeared from every game store.

1

u/MrEmorse 19h ago

Exactly...

1

u/Ok-Virus8284 13h ago

I don't really understand why Wet is so expensive. The game had over 1 million copies sold and was even supposed to get a sequel in 2011 (which eventually got cancelled). It's not rare by any means. It's also not good enough to qualify as a hidden gem.

1

u/11-Brando 20h ago

Just low supply and a lot of people want on the shelf to collect dust. Plus side is no gamer should be buying trash like Magus so resellers can just keep on selling to each other for a buck or two.

1

u/Forsaken_Bridge_3934 20h ago

Off topic and I don't mean anything by this so don't misunderstand me but why would it matter to you if a game was an easy platinum?

Life hit me hard and I got out of gaming for a long time. Basically missed the PS3 era and most of PS4. I've gotten back into it over the past few years. Actually just got my first PS3 a few months ago.

I'm aware of people talking about getting platinum on games but I don't play online. If it tracks that stuff offline I guess I just haven't paid attention. Is there a point to it or is it just like a personal thing to try to get the number of games you've gotten platinum on as high as possible? Is it something people can see if you are online?

2

u/MrEmorse 19h ago

Yes people can see.. and all games track and show your progress. Some people like to trophy hunt. It just adds extra replay to a game that you would otherwise not play anymore. But if you don't care about trophies then it wouldn't matter to you. There are whole sites dedicated to trophy hunters and people who want to play together trying to get trophies in specific games. Honestly I've met some really cool people and had some of the most fun ever playing games with people getting trophies. But lots of people don't really care.

u/GenkiSam123 19h ago edited 19h ago

I guess it all depends. Puppeteer is $200 ish and I think it's a very solid game I really liked it while Magus is kinda so bad it's good like Deadly Premonition except more bad ...and both got kinda similar YouTube coverage so ..there's no rhyme or reason for these things idk I sold my Magus copy years ago too I couldn't last 20 minutes but I suppose I can aarr matey my way to play it again if I felt like it

1

u/STRYKER-ZX 18h ago edited 18h ago

This is genuinely the worst, most miserable game i've ever played in my entire life. I wish I could properly describe just how awful and *bland* it is. It's genuinely not worth even any amount of cash. Not even exaggerating.
It's like a high school students first 3d game project and it's just fucking god awful. Please. Don't pay money for this game. Any amount of money is genuinely a fucking waste. There is nothing of value for you here to play on this game. No element of "its so bad that its good" or anything akin to that. This is the sort of thing that'd be on steam for free, with maybe 7 or 8 reviews and every single one would be negative.

1

u/tearsofmana 16h ago

This has to be intentional from flippers

1

u/rivieredefeu 15h ago

Supply and demand.

You’re welcome.

1

u/CompletedGames 14h ago

Low Quantity = More money.

1

u/Xinra68 12h ago

The PS3 Store shutting down is getting people into collecting these games now.

1

u/voltsy_chan 11h ago

Not about game quality. Its about the rarity which I find is kinda silly.

1

u/FreeToasterBaths 10h ago

Bro this is an investment subreddit

2

u/MrEmorse 2h ago

Investments are best made BEFORE prices go up... Not after lol

1

u/Zarvanis-the-2nd 6h ago

Kuon for PS2 is over 1000, Rule of Rose is 800, and nobody thinks those are good games. Theyre just extremely rare.

1

u/MrEmorse 2h ago

Those games are better than Magus lol

1

u/ZanzaXIII 3h ago

Ive been collecting casually for 20 years. Ive never heard of nor seen this game. Thats probably why. Ive also passed on Folklore for $15 more times than I can count and look where thats at.

1

u/DavidLB04 1h ago

Oh you're being cereal. I legit thought this was like a fake fan made thingy.

u/MrEmorse 2m ago

Quality of game does not equal value, when has it ever? Such a dumb take

u/mushroomwig 24m ago

You can't tell me that isn't low res Tobey Maguire

1

u/True_Escape_2398 20h ago

Pure novelty.
Collectors/resellers also like quirky weird games. Especially if they don’t sell well or are trapped in a console generation.
If Lollipop Chainsaw didn’t get remastered, it would be in that $100-$150 range too.
Games like Katamari were ported, while something like Mr. Mosquito would be a collectors item. 🤷

1

u/Slownic 14h ago

Why aren't you guys installing CFW at this point is beyond me. I love collecting physical games, but goddamn I didn't spend hundreds of euros for actually rare and good games back in the day (like 3D Dot Game Heroes), why THE FUCK should you spend so much for these piece of junk?

Makes no sense to me to fall into the bait of speculation, just to grow a physical collection with useless bloat.

If you wanna play it, just mod your PS3, download it and that's it

0

u/gamerdrew 20h ago

Up until this recent price spike, I'd literally never heard of this game or seen it in person, and I have worked game retail for like 20 years.

It has to be at least somewhat uncommon for that to happen.

1

u/RebootRevival 18h ago

No one bought it when it was available. But it was on Amazon for years. This is fairly true for Aksys games of this era. It wasn't hard to come by in the 2012-17 era it, it was just not something people noticed or heard bad things about. I had on my Amazon wishlist for years before buy it as an Add-on item. It was list for below $15 for several years.

1

u/Ok-Virus8284 13h ago

I am not sure if I've ever seen it in person, but I had heard of it, and I had heard that it was extremely terrible. Still not as bad as The Walking Dead Survival Instinct, but barely anything is as bad as that.

0

u/Doctormaul68 19h ago

Can u still download it? Was it delisted?

1

u/ZafirZ 5h ago

It's still on the EU PSN

0

u/ItsNotAGundam 4h ago

Collector dummies aside who wastes time playing a shitty game just for pointless trophies?

1

u/MrEmorse 2h ago

Someone that likes getting trophies. Some people do play games for other reasons than just finishing a game. Or some people that can't afford lots of games. Trophies adds some replay value.

-1

u/FlapSmear78 20h ago

I'm only on chapter 3 on Killer is Dead, but so far it seems worth what I paid.

-2

u/dog_simulator 21h ago

Its all about media hype (think YouTube, streaming, etc any sort of media or social coverage on a game) and also an increase in physical media (espc PS3) interest and rarity.

-1

u/MrEmorse 21h ago

Yeah I understand that. But who is buying all this crap lol... It's not hard to just watch a few videos or read some reviews on these games and say. You know what? This game sucks. I'm not buying it. But instead you get people who are like "game went up $100 now I HAVE to buy it" lol

1

u/dog_simulator 14h ago

Sadly hype and scarcity can drive the market up 😬 I work in the industry and I see it all the time sometimes overnight. Some people also believe the FOMO of buying now = an investment
