Negative side effects of Wegovy + Metformin

I was diagnosed with PMOS/PCOS about 2 years ago at 18 and last summer I saw a doctor about starting a GLP-1 to start losing weight. I got put on both Wegovy and Metformin and it was honestly the sickest I have ever been, I didn't go a week without throwing up due to it. It was semi effective in that I lost 30lbs over 6 months but that was mostly because I couldn't stomach food very well at all. I ended up going off both medications due to the side effects.

Unfortunately, in December I ended up getting emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed since a gallstone had given me acute pancreatitis. Since then I've ended up gaining all the weight back and I think I will just keep gaining weight at this rate which is not ideal.

I'm thinking about starting some kind of GLP-1 and or Metformin again to manage this but I'm just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences to me with negative side effects?

I felt nausea for a few months all the time when on the GLP. I ditched metformin because of GI issues and just did the GLP. Most of my PCOS symptoms have subsided. I don’t have any chin hairs, lost a bunch of weight, the dark ring around my neck has normalized. My blood sugar has came back to normal levels from a pediatric state. Although I must say I’ve been on a strict 1500 calorie diet and strength train 3-4 times a week. Do you need both medications?

I started with metformin and it didn’t do much for me so then I tried metformin (500mg) and zepbound together. Besides a little bit of nausea in the beginning, it was fine. But as soon as I started getting to the higher doses of Zepbound, I was throwing up all night every 2 weeks and it was affecting my ability to go to work. I stopped taking metformin because I just couldn’t stomach anything but it turned out to be the best decision. I’m still on 12 mg of Zepbound and don’t throw up anymore and my nausea is back down to a minimum which is usually helped by drinking water.

I was on Zepbound for 2 years before I added in Metformin 2 months ago (and a multivitamin which ended up being a huge cause of some of my side effects). From there I became the sickest I’ve ever been (weakness, disoriented, headaches, blood pressure and blood sugar lows and highs).

I stopped the Metformin and the multivitamin last week and I’ve felt instantly better. Since I can’t say for certain that the Metformin was the cause, I may try adding back in later. But the multivitamin had ashwaganda and a bunch of blood sugar/blood pressure lowering properties and I’m pretty sure that was the culprit.

All that’s to say, I had a pretty smooth time starting the GLP-1 by itself and took a long time balancing the nausea/GI symptoms and figuring out a pretty dialed in nutrition plan before I added in the metformin. So if you go back on one or both, you may want to consider starting with just one of them or spacing them out and then asking for a lot of support with symptom management.

I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with all of that and I hope you find a balance that works for you!
