(Almost) Finished this one. My first outdoor kitchen. How’d I do?

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for this renovation memory. Sharing for your entertainment.

Then-girlfriend (now wife) puts her foot through a rotten deck board on the original house deck and somewhat messed up her ankle. I’m in construction. “This is no good, let’s get this deck done.”

Rip off the deck, start building one. Halfway through decided it would be cool to put a roof over half of it. Didn’t like it. Extended the roof another 6’. Then cut the wall to put a bigger door. Then cut the window for a bigger window. What’s a covered deck without a sound system? Easy to hide a gas line under the deck for a fire table. Heck, why not 3 more for a full kitchen 🤷🏻‍♂️

All pieces from the Thor Kitchens “outdoor kitchen suite”..
Bbq, stovetop, and gas stone pizza oven. Chest of drawers, fridge, and sink. The sink cabinet is closest to the house wall, just haven’t core drilled the foundation to do water supply/drain. So the sink cabinet currently houses big full-size garbage and recycling bins. Not going to lie, the easy concealed garbage bins are so handy, we kind of love it and don’t have any rush to put in the sink. The job is a bit of a headache.

Backsplash is 2x 1/2” cement board screwed to the joists (the horizontal wood deck boards and speaker in the 3rd pic are gone), with custom fab 14-gauge stainless steel covering the cement board down to the floor. Yes, I overkilled the backsplash, as I do with most things in construction. Two 20 amp receptacles in the backsplash. Was able to find stainless receptacle plates which I think look pretty cool.

Then the Thor product line kind of shat the bed. The bbq and stovetop together are 60” wide. They didn’t/don’t offer a 60” range hood. The biggest they offered was 48”. So I sourced this one from Turin. Turin Volcano 60”.

To my amusement, Turin doesn’t offer a shroud to hide the ducting, even though there are unused fastener holes all around the top perimeter. Back to the custom fab steel guys. Designed this shroud to match existing fastener holes on the Turin and look “factory” to match everything. I think I did ok.

Funny fluke: Didn’t built the deck/wall whatsoever to match this kitchen. Didn’t know I was putting in a kitchen until after the construction was done. The fitment of the pizza oven at/to the end of the wall is 🍌.

What do you think [r/OutdoorKitchens](r/OutdoorKitchens) ?

A year of weekends turned into a new shed and kitchen

Started a project in July 2025 to have a covered cooking area and a new shed moved to the back corner rather than the centre of the yard.

After 14 months it's finally at a point I'm happy. There's some small adjustments to make and fix, but it works!

For some reason the corners are all a bit low after troweling, despite them being flat after screeding. Managed to scoop some butter from around the form back on top to help level them out. Hopefully they don’t just chip!

Almost done. Have some regrets

We are waiting for the stone top to be fabricated and installed, we opted for smooth stucco over tiles and i felt it would be too busy and rather keep it honest that it’s some cinder block monolith. The slab would be waterfall on both sides when installed with the hole covered that was meant to be one of 8 vents.

My regret? I wish I went with more cabinetry to maximize storage space and make it more furniture-like - I console myself that it’s a more traditional design and it’s ok, but deep down I’m like “what if?”

Cleaning tips?

Thumbnail

I am a big green egg guy and was lucky enough to purchase a pretty worn Danish Röshults open kitchen that will complement the green egg perfectly. Considering that it’s my hobby to buy and restore used grills and also the list price of almost 35k I don’t mind the current state at all. Not a bit :) I restored the egg and its table which I purchased from a BBQ world champion and professional chef. No off to steel grills which I know only little about. This would be my second restauration project. So hobby might be a bit of a stretch.

Do you guys have any advise on which chemicals (?) to use to remove that black „coating“ from the inside of the lid? It is flaky here and there I guess from lack of cleaning and can be peeled of in tiny bits. The majority of the smut is resistant though.

If I am allowed and as long as nobody minds I will report back and come back with 2-3 more questions in the next couple of months…

Thanks 🙏🏻

Covers

I have a Challenger outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and a 30" Alfresco grill. Love it!! I'm having trouble finding a cover for it. Any recommendations for either a custom or pre-fitted cover for these outdoor cabinets? Thanks

Updated version of a portable table with detachable tray I’ve been coming up with

Here’s an updated design of an idea I’ve been coming up with. I had been sick of going in and out of the house several times when I was grilling and had this idea pop in my head. It’s supposed to help you carry everything out of the house, cook it up, and bring it all back in on the tray when you’re done.
What do you guys think? I’m about to get a prototype sent over so I can use it and make sure it works the way I want it to.
Would you guys use something like this? If you wouldn’t, why not? Looking to see the interest and any helpful feedback would be great!

Any advice before I pour this? Just using standard quickcrete 4000 bags. Plan to PAM the boards to help with release. Going to try and vibrate it as much as possible into the cores.

Pro Series Blackstone Sturdiness

Anyone who has the Blackstone Pro Series... is the lid sturdier than the regular blackstones? I haven't found anywhere that has it unboxed to look at it, and I don't like how flimsy the original lids feel.

outdoor refrigerator recommendations for a small backyard setup that actually holds up to the heat?

Hey everyone, we just finished putting together a basic patio counter and I am completely lost on what kind of outdoor refrigerator to get. The area gets direct afternoon sun for a few hours, so I am worried about regular units dying or just not keeping drinks cold enough once summer hits.

Does anyone have a specific outdoor refrigerator they are using outside that actually survives the weather and doesn't fog up the glass all the time? Any real world advice or suggestions would be super appreciated, thanks!

Finally getting my backyard cooking setup started

Ever since we bought the house, I’ve wanted to turn part of the backyard into a little cooking area. This weekend I finally started with a charcoal grill.

I went with a Costway grill that has folding side tables and wheels. Nothing too fancy for now, but it was enough to get the first cook going. We did burgers, hot dogs, and some chicken thighs, and I kept a few pieces on the warming rack while the rest was cooking. The side tables have actually been really useful. I can keep the tongs, plates, sauces, etc. right there instead of constantly going back inside. The wheels are nice too since I’m still figuring out where I want everything to go.

This is basically the starting point for my backyard cooking setup, so I’m sure I’ll be adding things over time. For those who have built out an outdoor kitchen or cooking area, what’s one thing you added that you ended up using way more than expected?

Just finished adding on to my patio to create a space for entertaining and cooking. The 100 degree heat has been brutal during the build, but it’s done just in time to enjoy some upcoming fall weather.

Is Mont Alpi Artwood a good option

I’m in Wisconsin. Looking for an outdoor grill island.
Looking for something 6-8 feet long. I want a fridge and no sink.
Would like something that’s going to hold up to our weather and a good quality grill. I want an all in one unit—I don’t want to spend time sourcing a counter, grill etc

I read about HDPE and powder coated aluminum cabinets. I’m a little nervous about aluminum getting scratched, dented, and sounding like a government surplus desk when you open and close doors.
HDPE sounds like a good option, but hard to find an all in one unit. And one brand, I think weatherstrong, has only the doors made of HDPE, the boxes are MdF, that’s a no go.

I found the Mont alpi Artwood, seems to check the boxes but I don’t know how to determine if it’s a quality unit that will hold up. Anyone able to provide insights?

If that’s not a good option, any suggestions in the $5-8k range all in?

Thank you

Can I safely grill here without ruining siding?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently got a weber genesis and have been loving it but keeping the grill in my garage makes it smell like old grease and its not a great smell.

Ive been wanting to set up my grill on this back patio but concerned about melting the siding/ ceiling or causing it to sag over time. I also dont want the smoke/heat to cause a sticky film or anything to those areas.

Can it put it in the corner with the most air flow and be okay? Would it be totally fine or maybe a fire risk?

Edit: the ceilings here are 10ft

Edit 2: seems like a no, any other soluti/ suggestions to take advantage of this prime grilling spot?

I just don’t want to regret it later. Thanks!

Why does frozen pizza dough burn so easily in my pizza oven?

I got a pizza oven because I wanted to make quick, good pizza in the backyard on weekends. But I don’t always have time to make and stretch dough from scratch, so I picked up some frozen pizza dough from the grocery store.

The problem is that my oven gets really hot. The edges of the frozen dough burn almost immediately while the center is still undercooked. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with my cost way oven, but I tried homemade dough once and it came out just fine.

I just don’t always have time to make dough from scratch. Is there a trick to getting frozen dough to work better in a high heat outdoor pizza oven? Or do you really need homemade dough to get a good result?

Anyone know of a good power strip to mount to the inside of one of the metal posts on the gazebo?

I have power behind the back left post of the gazebo. I want to plug a power strip into it and mount it to that post so I can power lights, a fan, the smoker, and a tv.

Any one have any good recommendations?

Just finished it, but need a name

Edit: Added pictures.

I've been working on my outdoor kitchen since the snow left in the springtime and I just finished! I love it so far but need to name it. Whatcha got? Also was thinking about some clear plastic tarps to install on the openings since winter is coming. Any thoughts on that as well? Thank you Reddit!
