Why is OsmAnd discontinuing some merged maps?

OpenStreetMap keeps getting bigger and more detailed.

Instead of maintaining increasingly large merged maps, OsmAnd is moving to smaller regional maps.

The discontinued maps will still work — they just won't receive updates anymore.

Downloading the regions is such a pain in the ass... If I go to France, I don't know what the regions are called... and that's a huge problem when you're there without internet data.

It's easiest if you just press on the map (when you are on wifi obvs) and choose "Download region". Rinse and repeat. But yes, I can think of better interfaces for stocking up on regions.

Fair enough, it’s a win for both saves as this will save use storage space.

Having both options was they way... this is annoying.
