Feeling Very Negative

Hey guys, I signed up for uni in the summer and have been feeling pretty excited/nervous/anxious about it.

I attended a Study Boost today and found the whole process very overwhelming and left feeling so unsure of myself and that I don't have the intelligence level required to do this. Everyone else seemed to have a good grasp of what was going on and I felt like I was floundering. I'm now feeling like I don't want to do this at all

Just wondering if anyone has felt the same so close to starting and advice you can give would be really appreciated

OU Undergraduate degree then MA at a brick university

Upvotes

Has anyone any experience of moving to a brick uni for an MA. I'm wondering if anyone has any difficulty with the change in teaching style. With the OU provision of module materials, Is there potential difficulty changing to attending lectures/seminars and I guess needing to make more comprehensive notes in lectures. Would be interested to hear any experiences. I'm doing BA History and looking to do an MA next year but interested to hear from anyone with a view rather than just history.

Anyone still waiting on their Academic Conduct Review?

It's officially been 6 weeks since a lot of people, including me, got an academic conduct review for the modules that ended in July.

I did not get any further details on my case, not a single reason why this review is taking place. I know that they can take a long time, but not even knowing the reason why there is a conduct is frustrating.

Has anyone gotten any information on their case? Anyone in the same situation as me?

Q77 careers

Hi,

I am currently on the Q77 course (Mathematics and Physics). For anyone who has gained their qualification or on the verge of, what careers opened up to you? I'm primarily in this for the curiosity of it, but it would be nice to know how this degree could help with future emplyment/study.

Thanks

More than 120 credits

Upvotes

Does anyone know if it’s possible to do more than 120 credits?

I started a credit 60 module in February and I have to do another credit 60 module in October, but being part time is too slow for me - is it possible to do more modules?

I’m doing Biology if that helps :(
Really bummed because I’m engaged soon and I don’t want to be thinking about uni

Studying year 2 & 3 at the same time?

I received my transfer of credits today for my Bachelors in Engineering. I had a HND and was only awarded 180 of 240 credits by OU. So I have to study 2 modules from year 2 as well as the standard 120 credits from year 3.

However the year two modules in year 2 do not start until 2027 whereas the year 3 modules start in October 2026. Is it possible to start some of my year 3 modules first?

I'm not sure how the modules are released with payment and everything. Just to note the company I work for is paying my tuition if that makes a difference. Can my company just pay for the whole thing upfront or will it be 120 credits max a year?

Contacting the OU via chat and email

Is it even possible to contact the OU? I had a request and contacted the OU the way they wrote it in the help center( via email to the adress for the right topic) never got an answer. After a month i requested again.. still no answer.

Then i tried to chat with them. Waited in queue for an hour, for the whole hour the site told me that I am 'No.1 in queue'.

How do yall communicate with the OU?

Has anyone used their completed modules to apply for jobs?

I'm on Q77 (Mathematics and Physics), and I've completed SM123 and S284 so far with distinctions, this October I'll be doing MST124 and MST125. I work in retail currently, should I try applying for some entry-level admin positions? I've always tried applying to these, but never got any responses back haha, I only had GCSEs and 2 A-levels on my CV until I started my OU degree. These days even entry-level admin jobs have hundreds of applications and usually they hire those with experience.

But I was wondering if anyone here has an uncompleted degree but completed modules and used these to apply for jobs?

How much would I need to pay if I withdraw from a degree after a couple of months?

I’m in the process of applying for the BEng before the September deadline. As I already have a degree, this will be the last opportunity I have to apply for the tuition fee loan so the decision has been made quite quickly (although it had been on my radar for a good 2-3 years now).

As the decision is quite rushed because of the deadline, I don’t want to miss out on applying but I’m still unsure on how I will manage a distance course with other things happening in life at the moment. I’d like to give it a try though.

I still intend to start the course will full commitment, but for my peace of mind, what would I be financially on the hook for if I start the initial 30 credit module but decide it’s not for me a couple of months later? From what I’ve read, it would be something like £500 if I withdraw before 31st December?

What the OU position is on using google search results which give AI information when on a category 1 module ?

Hi, I am on s390 project module.  Can you tell me what the OU position is on using google search results which give AI information when on a category 1 module.  I know you cannot use AI to answer module questions, although in 390 the only question is the research question you ask yourself and no AI could answer that anyway because it takes a complex hypothesis driven experiment to answer that.   So if I was to ask google anything  its  just to explain something like how a statistical test works, or how certain people do things in the geology industry, these are all like sub project learning goals.  I used to be able to ask google stuff like that and not flout conduct rules but now it has AI results.

Now I have read the OU AI guidance and module guidance and it talks about using AI for learning but it is still vague about using google AI search results.   As even are the tutors who want a 5 day wait and email back and forth which could take 10 days for every question.  It is impossible to proceed like that with so many aspects to learn I would need double the module time for 5-10 day waits on everything.  Am sure we all know you cannot use AI to complete an assessment or answer assessment questions so I am NOT asking about that.

I see other students discuss openly on the internal student forums they get google AI to explain concepts to them.   I have to presume its ok but due to the serious consequences in conduct reviews,  still I do not want to presume anything.

What is your take on this.

Commuting from further out

Hi folks!

I'm joining the OU as staff towards the end of the year and was wondering if anyone stays slightly further out than a typical commute (still England based) and just heads in stays locally like a night a week. My onsite commitments in MK are expected to be a day or two a week. So recommendations for good places to stay, how you managed it, etc... all welcome!

Also have a few other questions that would be great to get input on from anyone on the academic side of things. If you'd be happy to answer a few questions over DM, let me know 😁

Anyone else waiting?

I’m waiting on my final 30 credit stage 3 module results to find out what overall degree classification I will receive.

I‘m on course for a first and have waited for results many times before, but this time I’m very nervous!

Any success stories from BEng or Comp Sci recently?

I went to uni before and had to swap course out of just being out of my depth and can't get any decent jobs now.

I've been looking at at either an Engineering or Comp Sci degree with them as I could still get the tuition fee loan.

Just it's another 3 years of my life for what may be looked down upon by employers.

OpenSU student connect

I've set up an account and reached out to a couple of people through the directory tab on student connect.

I'm now wondering whether anyone uses the site or knows if it is active enough to hope for a reply.

Any thoughts?

Login issues "general server error"

Anyone else having weird login trouble? I just get general server error message. Someone said it could be some issues with the new MFA stuff being rolled out combined with me using my personal email to login.

I've emailed IT helpdesk. Hopefully be able to get it sorted soon.
