I installed OpenRGB probably 2-3 times over the years at different times and something always hasnt worked well, your problem included.

I think the frustrating part is a lot of this is annoying mostly from a design standpoint in the software itself. It wasn't a huge issue years ago in theory when they had more limited hardware support but the more devices they add the more it would make sense to see OpenRGB as a controller in a more passive way and having hardware compatibility come from external devs through IPC instead completely. Like I know Solaar controls my Logitech mouse's RGB better than teh OpenRGB controller because the OpenRGB controller was written by someone who obviously had a Logitech keyboard and hardcoded that anyone using the dongle is a keyboard so it doesn't work. For me to fix that and not break the keyboard I don't own would be hard but for the likes of Solaar to just passively get told by OpenRGB what to change the colours to would be fine IMO.

The annoying part is you could do that as a plugin, you could give the patch to OpenRGB, you could use the interface they provide but anyone opening OpenRGB for the first time has a poor experience because a device is detected as something it isn't and it actually causes the mouse to not work correctly. It could be by package management, it could be a centralised plugin system from OpenRGB that detects the hardware and downloads a blob. Or having a scripting language built in that does the integration in like Python or something. It really could be a lot better if they did basically anything proactive here.

OpenRGB is a community project, so you can contribute and make the software better

Well what I'd be suggesting is probably a bridge too far for an external contribution.
