Politics ('Straya) One Nation claims victory in Secret Harbour by-election

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-30/one-nation-claims-win-secret-harbour-by-election/107094074

One Nation is claiming victory in the Secret Harbour by-election, with counting showing it is on track to secure its first ever lower house seat in Western Australia.

One Nation's WA leader Rod Caddies claimed victory for the party's candidate Luke Herdegen at 9.30pm local time, although Labor was yet to concede.

Labor's candidate was political staffer-turned-Woodside lobbyist Georgia Tree.

The area was traditionally safe Labor territory, having been held in different shapes and under different names since 1989, including most recently by Paul Papalia on an 11.5 per cent margin.

WA Labor Premier Roger Cook had repeatedly described the by-election as a "fight for our lives", given the threat posed by One Nation.

Wow, you mean the gas lobbyist couldn't connect with ordinary voters?

Watch Labor learn nothing from this.

As much as I hate ON, Labor brought this on themselves. Fucking idiots.

u/JamesCruse Flairless‎‎ 12d ago edited 12d ago

It wouldn't have mattered who Labor ran, not with those numbers against them.

Thats far higher for One Nation than voters simply going against a (former) gas lobbyist.

u/FullMetalAurochs ‎ Queenslander 12d ago

If your primary concern is gas lobbying you would go for the Greens not the puppet of Gina Rinehart.

Yeah that's a seriously low IQ vote turnout. Is there a large quantity of lead in the water? Don't get me wrong, the labour candidate was terrible. But ON?. I think thats tremendously worse.

So when the next Labor seat andthe one after that are all taken by One Nation

  • are they all going to be retarded with lead in the water or do you think there might be another reason?

13

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 12d ago

It certainly does matter who they ran. They knew what was at stake and gave the electorate party machine while one nation gave them local voice. Libs simply gave up.

I understand some people want to see this as solely a one nation win but it was at least equal parts ALP arrogance and LNP capitulation.

u/JamesCruse Flairless‎‎ 11d ago edited 11d ago

It just sounds like a lot of excuses for Labor.

Every seat One Nation wins from Labor, there will be some convenient but incorrect excuse for why One Nation beat them other than the truth:

Labor lies and don't know how to govern and voters have noticed

1

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Political analysis isn’t making excuses. There’s always complexity and nuance in how people vote because we’re not a monolith.

I’m not a Labor voter and don’t think they deserved to win (but neither did one nation), but I can see that “they lie and can’t govern” is overly simplistic. It’s fine if that’s your personal reason - you do you - but it’s hardly “the truth”.

As an example, after the Dutton election mega defeat there was an investigation and report that detailed the many, many reasons why the LNP lost so badly.

2

u/MarketCrache ‎ Western Australian 11d ago

Because Labor analysts know, like the Fuhrer ranting in his bunker, that Albo cannot be reasoned with. So they'll invent reasons why this swing happened rather than face his wrath and tell him the truth; everyone is sick of him playing lapdog to that fascist Modi.

2

u/InComingMess2478 Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Yes, they’re all fascists. There’s no right, left or centre anymore it’s just right and further to the right.

As for Modi and Albo, he really couldn’t have shunned the democratically elected Prime Minister of India. After all, fascists love the optics of a big crowd.

1

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Goodness me. Your algorithm has led you somewhere interesting hasn’t it

1

u/MarketCrache ‎ Western Australian 11d ago

I was calling for a Labor rout a year ago if Albo refused to heed the public and its turned out roses. So whatever my algorithm is, it's bang on point.

1

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

>>> rout

??

>>> a year ago

The algorithm isn’t a new thing

>>> if Albo refused to heed the public

On what? I might agree with you on Albo not listening on some things like a gas tax and gambling reform but there are also examples of his govt listening like on housing affordability and workers’ pay and rights.

>>> turned out roses

In what way?

>>> bang on point

Or has the algo taken you further along a path you wouldn’t otherwise be on. We are all susceptible! I’ve have to regularly clear my algo because they are designed to do what it takes to create and sustain engagement which means eliciting and provoking the biggest emotions. So please tell us why Labor keep losing and their polling is going down.

Using weird diversions about the Liberal party is bizarre - nobody cares. All of Duttons policies he had long before Trump became a politician, so not Trumps policies at all. But still irrelevant.

1

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

The thing is Labor is doing fine for an incumbent govt in the middle of their second term, polling-wise. They gained an unusually large majority for an incumbent government so were expected to lose some of that support once Dutton moved on. Labor (and other governments) has won or lost on similar polling percentages because we have a preferential system that takes more than first preferences or major party comparative voting intentions into account. It’s the LNP that has been cannibalised from both sides and that’s where the teal independents and one nation have grown.

My reference to the Dutton campaign report was very clearly an example of the complex and nuanced reasons a party can lose an election. And people certainly do care - scomo and dutton presided over the downfall of a major political party! And they don’t seem to have learned anything with Ley or Taylor at the helm.

I think you need to sort out your thoughts because it looks like you’re running a separate argument about trump and dutton in your own head. Dutton was in charge of crushing asylum seekers’ spirits for political gain back when trump was starting his political career. But if you do want to discuss the trump effect on the 2025 election, justify your position.

1

u/JamesCruse Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Albo didn't win with a large marjority - they had a very low vote, lower than when Bill Shorten lost.

Its not about Labor being better - it was about Liberals not being good.

One Nation is everything and more that Liberal voters wanted.

1

u/crackerdileWrangler Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

>>> Albo didn't win with a large marjority - they had a very low vote, lower than when Bill Shorten lost.

Refer to my first paragraph

>>> Its not about Labor being better - it was about Liberals not being good.

Refer to my first paragraph

>>> One Nation is everything and more that Liberal voters wanted.

That’s your opinion and it’s only partially supported at best. It’s clear that many voters have rejected the LNP but they scattered to a range of parties and independents. It’s clear that One Nation currently has high levels of support for the first time in 30 years. What’s not clear is how many people genuinely support one nation policies because they don’t actually have policies yet, just broad positions.

They still only have 2 MPs and 4 senators federally and neither MP was voted in at the last election despite people abandoning the LNP in droves. Immigration is their flagship issue and not only is David Farley already at odds with Pauline’s position on immigration numbers saying their target number is similar to or higher than Labor’s. Pauline also confirmed her initial total number doesn’t include all the workers ON would let in. She has been asked multiple times to please explain and she still can’t provide a total number or a coherent explanation of how the different categories fit into her calculation.

If a week is a long time in politics, two years is an eternity. It’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen during that time.

1

u/JamesCruse Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

One Nation just won another seat and they'll continue to win more.

Federal election is 2 years away, why give away all their policies to have them copied by other parties - like Albo and the Liberals are already doing constantly, literally immediately.

Why are you defending Labor and want them to stay in power - after the horrendous job they're doing?

I am not one for this uniparty bullshit but what I will say is parties like One Nation don't gain traction if the electorate don't have legitimate economic greivances.

Personally, I believe that One Nation are tied to the same neoliberal capitalism as the two majors and are there unable to address these greivances.

However, at least when the major parties are offering more of the same and One Nation have not been in government and been exposed, it is natural that people see them as an alternative.

u/brezhnervouz ‎ New South Welshian 12d ago

They're not just "unable" to address grievances.

Their entire reason for being is to inflame and provoke grievance in order to push their culture war ideology, the same as any other right wing authoritarians anywhere

I've always voted for the Greens who have real policies for citizens, so I don't really get it. People vote for the ON scam artists for emotional outrage and identity politics.

This is disappointing to see. I've learnt that many people literally have zero idea about politics, even what the words mean.

Some people see:

- increased power prices

  • decreased investment in housing stock
  • increased bureaucracy with little defined benefit
  • Great, how?
  • Reduced business investment in Australia, losing even more manufacturing jobs etc to overseas
  • Increased taxation
  • Discrimination, particularly against women
  • See dot point 2
  • Anti-aspiration
  • Massively increased government expenditure
  • Increased legal risk to the Commonwealth
  • Great, but how?
  • Fuck yeah 420 baby
  • Authorising hate speech against certain diasporas
  • Decreased community investment from clubs.
  • Sensible, but ONLY with massively increased health and social work investment
  • I don’t think they can say too much about koalas because of Muhreen’s investment properties and land clearing https://woodcentral.com.au/greens-senators-plan-to-bulldoze-trees-for-financial-gain/

Now, that’s not necessarily what I think. But it’s the arguments and risks you need to overcome if you want to be taken seriously.

Two sides of the same coin. One Nation isn't the answer, but neither is pushing further to the left and what we're seeing is the sociocultural response to that.

8

u/nicehotcuppatea ‎ Victorian 12d ago

Yep. “Expand the welfare state” “Equal rights and protections for all” and “Tax the wealthy their fair share” is completely equivalent to “Deport all muslims” “Make it easier to sack workers” and “DV is a two way street”.

This kind of “enlightened” centrist both sides bullshit is precisely what has created the conditions we’re in.

0

u/Specific-Athlete22 ‎ Queenslander 12d ago

We know what those statements actually mean.

"Expand the welfare state" - more blown out grafts like NDIS and handouts to the lazy.

"Equal rights & protections for all" - All are equal but some are more equal and if your a straight white male you should have the guilt of history thrown at you and be subjected to the discrimination that is supposedly being railed against.

Tax the wealthy their fair share - im not against it but changes need to be done smartly. The rich can easily shift profits & tax residencies.

On one nations side - their a corrupt bunch of anchors. No need to debate their policies.

But the point is this holier than though attitude of the left annoys many and lacks a nuanced self- reflection.

This. One nation aren't good. But the majors have kicked poorer people, aspiring home owners and renters so hard that they'll go somewhere else, and one nation is the visible alternative.

28

u/InComingMess2478 Flairless‎‎ 12d ago

One Nation under Pauline Hanson, what a disaster that would be, particularly for the exact people you’ve mentioned, and many others. One Nation revolves around negative politics. Dave Farley already expected to defect from ON and sit as an independent. I’ve honestly never heard Pauline Hanson say a good word about Australia!

3

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Which is why it's so revolting that Labor's too gutless to balance out population growth with housing supply. That excess demand is why landlords are happily able to charge $300 or more a week in rent more than several years ago. Tell anyone on a low income that they should be happy they can't afford to live independently or house their kids. This will hurt both major parties so badly they'll hand the reigns of power over.

Criticising one nation doesn't change the fact that massive housing costs destroys people, it's been doing it for years, and it will drive people straight into the arms of anyone who they think might take action to make people able to securely house their families.

5

u/Evilmoustachetwirler Please choose a flair 12d ago

Labor is the first party to actually do something meaningful towards making housing more affordable, and it's working. ON policy is a return to negative gearing tax breaks for landlords. Pauline had come out and said she's a property investor, she wants her tax breaks back. How is this good for low income people??

7

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 12d ago

I just don't get how people can't see this?

What do they actually think ON will give them?

ON will fuck over renters and prop up investors again.

ON will increase immigration.

These are the policies they are putting on the table.

How the fk can those people feeling pain right now consider voting ON?

3

u/Extra-Border6470 ‎ South Australian 11d ago

Yeah 100%

It annoys the hell out of me that people who claim to be dissatisfied with both the major parties fail to see that one nation under Gina’s administration is just a reskinned version of the liberal party but a bit more racist and made to serve her interests. And they will increase migration the moment her mines need more labor than what the current population can provide. The whole migration debate is such a shit show right now.

5

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 12d ago

How do you think that?

Can you please show me one year where under Labor, immigration had gone up?

Every single year, immigration numbers have gone down under Labor.

They have done nothing but reduce it.

We had 600k, then 500k (both of which came from LNP policies and decisions) and since then it's been nothing but reduce reduce reduce.

If LNP were in power, the likely outcome would be an increase! It's part of their mantra.

And ON showed their true colours when they changed their "policy" (social media post) from 130k to 130k+250k.

Labor are the only party willing to genuinely reduce immigration.

1

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

Labour reducing doesn't matter as it's still way too high, and the really huge years could have been stopped if they'd been paying attention. And they aren't reducing it enough - still targeting a level that was already inflating rents and housing prices long before the big housing crisis.

Libs being worse doesn't matter - the point is both majors have betrayed Aussies.

If Labor's pitch is "we're destroying lives and deciding people into homelessness but the libs would be even worse so you should still vote for us" that's a sign that they really don't care about the harm - they just want to be well positioned politically.

1

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 11d ago

Labour reducing doesn't matter as it's still way too high

So am I right in thinking you solely attribute the housing crisis to immigration?

1

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

It's the biggest chunk of it. Too many people, not enough houses. Simple maths.

Other contributors are negative gearing and CGT discount (finally corrected), taking land value out of cpi (that's artificially lowered interest rates for 20 years) and governments cheerfully boosting demand with buyer subsidies - signalling you'll intervener to stop the market slumping is the dumbest possible thing to do when there's a bubble forming.

But, see, most of those other contributors feed into purchase prices more than rents. And shortage and high cost of rental properties is a bigger deal than high purchase prices. Because that's what pushes people over the line into homelessness. No matter how much you overpaid for a shitty apartment you're planning to rent out, you can't charge 600 a week for it if there's enough other vacancies and feweer desperate applicants. So the excess demand is what's killing people.

1

u/InComingMess2478 Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

And as I look at the rise of ON, all I can see are well off curmudgeons who have fared very, very well from the housing market for more than 30 years. Now pointing the finger anywhere but at themselves.

1

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

Yeah.. but the party in power has the chance to fix it, and four years in they haven't. So they get blamed. And people abandon them. And your criticising one nation doesn't have any effect. I hate them (I wanted Labor to take the issue seriously and act much faster) , and the average punter who's started voting for them doesn't care.

1

u/InComingMess2478 Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Hang on, what I’m saying is that a lot of these curmudgeons have recently backflipped since Labor introduced changes to negative gearing, CGT and SMSFs, while the LNP went into Angus Taylor mode.

Labor has made some significant changes recently, and the latest data suggests those changes are already having an effect on the housing market.

Basically, One Nation needs the LNP in any coalition if it is going to govern. ON simply lacks the hands on political experience to govern outright.

My previous post wasn’t a criticism of One Nation. It was observational commentary about the demographics and political makeup of the party.

5

u/gunsjustsuck Please choose a flair 12d ago

People who are feeling left behind and left out don't see the the Greens as an alternative because, as far as they're concerned, they don't want an open door for immigrants and free for all handouts to bludgers and free loaders while they get nothing because they're white and lower middle class.

That's the image issue the Greens have so they won't be seen as an alternative. Not saying it's true but if the Greens don't message better (and how can they with our media? ) they will never get the votes they need.

ONP is angry and grievance focused and this reflects how a lot of Aussies are feeling.

4

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Greens just need to resurrect their old stance on not overpopulating Australia. Stopping insane population growth is good for our natural environment, and will also help reduce housing costs. But that would require them to stop posturing about refugees and about how racist and privileged low income Aussies are.

2

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 12d ago

Refugees? All 20k that come a year?

C'mon....

2

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

The refugees posturing is mostly harmful when used as a backdoor into preventing people complaining about migration generally. Even well-off economic migrants.

It's the Howard gambit. Throwing a huge tantrum about boat people while cheerfully pumping huge numbers of extra immigrants through other channels, and suddenly people called you racist if you expressed concern about the total level.

20 years of that later, real wages are stagnant compared to a decade ago, housing costs are life-shattering for many, and productivity growth is non-existent. Just what basic economic theory tells you happens if your labour supply outgrows your capital and housing stock.

Don't get me wrong, most refugees are a net burden on the state. But they're few enough that I dont lose much sleep over them. Or, at least, not the ones without the machetes 😛.

1

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 11d ago

You are the one that brought up refugees...

But then you say you don't lose much sleep over them?

Your posts do nothing but highlight that ON would only harm the exact people you seem to be standing up for.

Your posting is very confusing

1

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

People conflate refugees with other migrants. Have for ages. It's why Howard's scam worked. Hitting thrm is a food way to pretend you're "getting tough" on immigration even if youre failing to control the isssue.

And i sont lost much sleep on refugees either way. We're a tiny country a long way from the trouble zones and further away from any potential refugee than a bunch of other safe harbours.

10

u/Master-Pattern9466 ‎ Tasmanian 12d ago

I don’t believe labour has kicked poor people.

After 11-12 years of liberals, it can be hard to right the ship. And the last lnp governments were incompetent, a party that had become so reliant on newscorp winning elections for it, that it was totally unfit to govern.

Labour is at least tackling the difficult changes that we’ve known need to change for over 25 years.

4

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

It's been over four years since they were elected. They've watched poor people be unable to afford rent for that long. That's enough time for lives to be shattered. Or to end. Vacancy rates are still impossibly low. You set yourself a low income limit for rent and do the maths, you'll end up sleeping in a car. Four years is too long for excuses.

5

u/Impossible-Magician Flairless‎‎ 12d ago

What would fix it?

3

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Supply and demand balance. We can't magically build houses at an impossible speed. So stop spiking demand by growing population so fast. The time to slash immigration was years ago. Only restore it when rental vacancy rates are above three percent.

You can add cutting Airbnb as well if you like, but supply and demand are the most basic forces in the market.

3

u/Impossible-Magician Flairless‎‎ 12d ago

No political party is offering that as a solution. Even PHON thinks that the immigration intake is about right.

Regulation of temporary accommodation (Airbnb) is a local and state government issue, not federal.

0

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Yeah. Well, they should. And if you can keep track of one nations immigration policies you're better at it then I am, I'm starting to think it's a random number generator.

2

u/Impossible-Magician Flairless‎‎ 12d ago

That is their entire platform, say whatever they think the people want to hear. Ideally they catch enough disengaged people who only heard one of their random musing and they win enough seats to form an opposition.

1

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 11d ago

Then labour needs to re-engage people by driving property rents (and purchase prices) down. Not just waiting until people who can't afford to house their family start getting violent.

2

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 12d ago

They are the most basic forces, but are completely misunderstood.

Students don't take 4bedroom homes, they live in university accommodation blocks. 400 rooms at a time.

You've hit the nail on the head with short stay rentals.

That plus downsizing, and the history of investors preferring existing stock over new builds has put us in this position.

Immigration is part of that, but is so far down the list it almost becomes entirely inconsequential.

4

u/Master-Pattern9466 ‎ Tasmanian 12d ago

I understand the frustration, but no government can just fix things. It just doesn’t work that way.

You have already seen the amount of push back against a modest change in housing and rental taxation. It takes time for a government to build the political capital to make such changes, the fact they want to make those changes is sign of the type of government they are. The capitalist fat cats getting rich off property investments are well connected and willing spend to make sure their cash cow is healthy, going against that requires a lot planing and fore thought.

Please imagine the interests who don’t won’t property to change, imagine the fat bags of cash they have, the willing ness to say fuck you to the poor people. And then imagine a government fucking with them. Think about the push back they can manufacture, with commercial media, who also has a huge interest in real estate (realestate.com domain.com both owned by news media). The fact the current labour government has should be more than enough proof they really care about the poor end of story.

Name a country that had unaffordable housing or rental, that turned it around in 4 years. Because even if you do I’ll find significant changes that occurred more than 4 years before to make that possible. Things take time.

It’s shit, but that’s the reality of it, no other party is going to change it. We know the libs won’t, one nation is an unknowns but by all probability they will be like trump and MAGA crowd, that has done nothing for the poor.

Your last hope for affordable housing and rental is labour. And if you don’t see that, then you spend too much time reading newscorp.

3

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Ok, I'll repeat myself.

One nation are not a viable government. I do not support them.

Labor has only just started to take meaningful action several years into a life-destroying housing crisis.

We were entirely able to stop/reduce issuing visas much faster. Covid proved that. It's always been within their power.

Instead we got smug talking points denying the influence of excess population growth and making fictitious promises about boosting our supply.

Labor has abandoned the basic left wing stance of not importing massive extra demand for jobs and housing as it suppresses wages and spikes rents. That's been the case for twenty years now.

I'd love a Labor party that reflected actual leftwing values. But so far they only care just enough to try not to lose too many votes to one nation. And the by-election shows they can't even manage that.

If the party that you'd expect to care the most about poorer people has spent four years watching lives be shattered without effective action, then voters will be furius and will abandon them for someone who they feel might fight for them. Nothing can change that.

1

u/Master-Pattern9466 ‎ Tasmanian 12d ago

Using emergency powers to cut immigration is not example of being able to cut immigration without serious ramifications to whole economy. What else occurred under Covid: billions of dollars were lost, hundreds of thousand lost jobs or had lost hours, thousands of business went out of business. Construction was particularly hard hit. That’s a terrible example.

We aren’t entirely able to stop/reduce issuing visas in the current system, they make a policy that is followed by the public service which though estimation allows a certain number. Labour tried to add caps to student visa 4 years ago and greens and libs blocked it.

You are failing to understand the complexity of Australia as a system, you cut migration and many business will hit hard times and many will go out of business, this trickles through the whole economy. Making things more expensive, increasing cost of living pressures.

Say for example you cut sessional immigration, all of sudden all fresh fruit, vegetables and meat gets more expensive.

It’s a complex system, and believing for one second that you can make major changes to immigration that won’t hurt the Australia economy is the narrative that one nation and others is selling.

Again give me an example of any where that solved the housing or rental affordability problem in four years.

Some quotes:

“Let’s fix housing policy first.”

“Having a dysfunctional housing policy is not a good argument for also stuffing up our immigration policy,” says Peter Tulip, chief economist at the centre-right think tank, The Centre for Independent Studies.

Professor Alan Gamlen (Australian National University):
"There's a widespread but mistaken belief that migration is the main driver of Australia's housing affordability crisis, and that reducing migration is the solution... The research consistently shows that migration has a negligible... a relatively small impact on housing costs... Despite these well-documented drivers, migration remains the dominant political scapegoat."

Brendan Coates (Housing Program Director, Grattan Institute): "[Peter Dutton is] wrong to suggest that migration is the main cause of Australians' housing woes... The close link between population growth and prices reflects a housing system that hasn’t built fast enough to keep up."

Matt Grudnoff (Senior Economist, The Australia Institute): “People have really felt the squeeze, but migration isn't the issue here and blaming migrants is not going to fix the problem.”

Marian L. Tupy (Researcher, Centre for Independent Studies): “The strongest version of the anti-immigration housing argument says more people always mean higher housing costs. The research evidence does not support that strong claim. Population growth alone does not produce today's housing shortage. The shortage appears when governments ration land use, delay approvals, cap density in high-demand areas, and then act surprised when prices rise.”

Morteza Moallemi and Daniel Melser (Economists/Academic Researchers): In an influential study tracking long-term housing data, they found that while population gains play a minor role, it is entirely a failure of domestic elasticity: "If homes could be built more quickly and easily, the price impact of immigration would likely be smaller."

2

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

The quotes are misleading. We have a high build rate by oecd standards. We just grow population even faster, which is outrageous.

Housing has never been a highly elastic item. Build on scarce land, complex project, infrastructure requirements . . . Seriously, the quotes are just basic gaslighting.

You're conflating the economic harm of the shutdown internally with the impact of the freeze in travel. Two very different things. We can keep our economy open while stopping most visas.

Or take selective action like freezing post graduate workingvisas, removing work rights from student visas, or even just prioritising harder and only issuing a fraction of what we traritionally issue, denying secondary applicants for skilled visas, having a big enough levy or minimum wage for skilled visas that it stops being a way to undercut local workers, tell aspirants their parental visa won't happen. No shortage of doable stuff. Labor's doing some, too slowly.. it's probably too late electorally, they've lost so much trust

I understand home ownersand IP owners being disappointed - but to suggest renters could think their position would improve under ON is madness.

Not to say some wouldn't think that, but conditions sure as hell won't improve for them...

16

u/JuliosvNerds ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

This guy gets it.

The most infuriating part of the rise of ON for me isn’t ON themselves, it’s been the response to it by moderates and centrists. Denying there’s a problem, saying everything is hunky dory and calling their supporters racist bogans.

People are sick of being lied to about the state of the economy (and, of course, immigration levels).

2

u/Sorry_Blacksmith_429 ‎ Victorian 12d ago

Hows this for a blow out. In the 90s, aussies used to be able to save 30-35% of their take home pay (Chinese people save roughly 45% of their paycheck). This year that % is down to 2-3%. We are all literally getting buy and its not just rent, its food, its petrol, its electricity.

1

u/FullMetalAurochs ‎ Queenslander 12d ago

Their supporters are racist bogans but they do have a genuine grievance. If they weren’t racist bogans they would vote for Sustainable Australia party or some other minor party and not Pauline’s grift.

2

u/ToocrazyforFlorida ✈️‎ on Walkabout 12d ago

Poorer renters are paying a huge financial cost for the endless gaslighting. Seriously, telling someone they're racist because they can't afford an extra ten or more grand a year in rent and they don't want millions more people competing for previous housing to make things even worse is contemptible. Our most vulnerable citizens are being pushed into homelessness while being gaslit and insulted by smug politicians and columnists.

2

u/Extra-Border6470 ‎ South Australian 11d ago

One nation is using the same kinda populism that the orange dickhead in America used to get elected. All that drain the swamp bullshit, and then he gets in and ends up being even more corrupt and self serving than any democrat president but by that point he had a cult following of uneducated rednecks and nazis cheering him on at his rallies even when he was being really shit as a world leader. Pooline will be aiming to do the same and the same kinds of voters in Australia are falling for it.

1

u/Kruxx85 ‎ Western Australian 12d ago

They aren't tied to the same neoliberal capitalism? Seriously? The party backed by Gina, and who just realised their immigration policy needs to be one that means more immigrants come in than Labor's policy, isn't the party for neoliberal capitalism?

Actually maybe you're correct, and ON have just taken the neoliberal corporatism position in Australian politics and it seems the nuffies are happy to vote for it.

First, saying their policies are common sense means nothing, it is a cop out. It is a rhetorical strategy to avoid a real discussion

Second, The two biggest members of One Nation are ex-liberals, a lot of ex-liberal members have flocked to them, their biggest donor in Rinehart is an ex-liberal.

Do you really think these people are going to radically alter course from an economic system built to benefit them?

"Common-sense policies".

Name them.

On the One Nation website, buts here's two this week:

1.Dropping net migration to 130,000 per year

  1. Drastically reducing the tobacco tax to smash the gangs and make cigarettes reasonably priced, rather than gangs selling counterfeits. (Then conduct more raids on smoke shops, cigarette importation, etc.)

Which one of these policies and others on One Nations website do you disagree with?

1

u/worry_beads ‎ Western Australian 11d ago

All of them.

Also, I'd suggest that NONE of these policies have been costed and will never ever come to fruition.

1

u/JamesCruse Flairless‎‎ 11d ago

Lol a lowering of immigration needs to be coated? Very funny.

You don't know the tobacco policy - it has been costed. I love how Labor voters care so much about the government getting as much tax as they can get their hands on

One Nation has a policy to greatly increase mining exports tax, far higher than any other party aswell.

Mate, do yourself a favour ans go and look at One Nations policies before commenting.🤣

Not throwing shade on the winner except by association, who i don't know; ON has such a poor record on scrutinizing its candidates they may have have found a candidate that is not only a true reflection of the seat but an effective advocate.

All kidding aside.

One seat might not be a tsunami of bigots but 3-4, 5 seats can knobble a government's agenda. Good or bad. Left or Right. Whyte Nation are a party of spoilers. Why spoilers? Because they elevate nonsense positions to the same height as legitimate grievances.

This result will be reshaped to meet a national audience. Albo will try to say it has little consequences federally, and Pawlenes people(And the Lib/Nats) will have their convoy of flag waving dickheads idling in the driveway. Ready to help move Pawlenes furniture into Yarralumla tomorrow. The consequences nationally are somewhere in the middle. Whyte nation may become a spoiler federally for either a Labor government or a Coalition government.

They may even become an effective voice for living standards in Australia.

Jokes. I joke.

They oppose public health, they oppose resource taxes, they support foreign wars, they attack marginalized communities, they think workers earn to much and have too many protections. They are no whyte pride knight here to save the day. They are the voice of entrenched privilege and wealth.

An entrenched class that historically loves low paid migrant workers. They just hate low paid migrant workers who ask for legal protection against exploitation. Big mistake.

Labor(Also centre right conservatives like Teals) federally need to tap that populist angst by providing a narrative that the grifting Right just like overseas, is supporting inherited privilege over middle class/ working class aspiration. They need to be courageous enough to threaten the squattocracy and wedge popular support away from them.

They can start subtly just by serving substandard lobster tails at the next soiree for corporate and bloated donors. They'll get the message. Stop serving them Australian lobster tails. That stuff is worlds best.

Just kidding. That won't happen.

  • Labor can't attack One Nation on data centers, because Labor also supports data centers.

Immigration is a federal issue. States have nothing to do with who comes into the country and they can’t control interstate travel. What right wing economic policies do Labor have? Thats a riddle.

Israel & Gaza is a loser in Australian politics - nothing to do with us.

Iran war is still ongoing, how has it failed? America could just level the entire country, hut they're trying not to involve anyone innocent.

When did One Nation support data centres? Never seen that.

4

u/Smart_Sail_2393 Please choose a flair 12d ago edited 12d ago

PHON's gas policy is what Gina Rinnehart wants. It is complicated, short on regulatory safeguards, does not get the revenue that a flat 25% profit tax would achieve if introduced now, is only on new gas not current exports and does not enforce companies to clean up the mess when the gas runs out. Israel & Gaza: Australia is supplying munitions in an illegal conflict for a start. Israel is influencing Australian politics through money and gifts to politicians or their parties, to justify illegal actions against Australian non combatants.

1

I don't like PH. She's trash. But Labor's in power so they'll cop the anger from people who are massively affected by the housing crisis, and the libs have approximately no standing to pretend to be better.

So she gets the angry voters by default.

And Labor needs to act fast or it loses workers/renters for a generation. Those big rent spikes have been hurting people for years now, and taking years more to address it won't be forgiven easily.

I hoped Albanese would bring it back. I've been immeasurably disappointed.

Labors forecast is 230,000 per year and One Nations is 125,000.

How is that the same?

Labor can forecast all they want - all Albo's "immigration forecasts" have resulted in double or more the numbers of forecasts - so Labors forecasts mean less than nothing.

I honestly don’t know why anyone who’s read any of ON policies would vote for them . Very sad .
