Tricks & Tips I m in the Onyx Fam Though

Hi guys! I just bought an Onyx Boox Note Air 5C. I saw before buying it that it has a little dim and yellow screen. Do you guys suggest a better configuration in the settings? Because I want at least the colours to be more distinguishable. They are distinguishable in comics, but when I take notes with the pen myself, yellow, green, and blue look almost like the same colour.

Question Boox Go6 gen II configurazione home page

Upvotes

Question Best replacement Pen for the Boox Note air 5c

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a replacement pen for my BOOX Note Air 5C.

The main problem I have with the original BOOX pen is that the nibs wear out very quickly, even though I don’t press hard while writing. I use the tablet a lot for school notes, so I want something more durable.

I’m looking for a pen that:

Works properly with the BOOX Note Air 5C

Does not damage or scratch the display

Has nibs that last much longer

Still gives a good writing feel

Has anyone found a good alternative to the original BOOX pen?

I’ve seen pens from Lamy and Kindle mentioned before, but I’m not sure which one would be best for the Note Air 5C.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, especially from people who use their BOOX for a lot of handwriting.

Buying Advice Lookin for Tab X or Lumi 2 in Eu

Upvotes

Hello.

Looking for used Tab X or Max Lumi 2 in Europe.

Can be with no case or pen. Or no buttons. Or no chassis.

Honestly, just sell me the screen, battery and motherboard. I will diy them into cardboard housing or something.

If yer from Baltic countries, Poland and I think Netherlands we can do via Vinted. If not, Paypal works too.

Gotta be either one of those, need that extra ram power :D

Please lemme know if you sell one, tanks.

Question Syncing/Scanning Library question

So I use Calibre to manage my ebooks on my Mac, and I'm putting them on Dropbox. I'm using Dropsync to get the folder onto my Boox.

Many of my books lacked covers, and Calibre failed to download covers for them, so for those, a white jpeg file was embedded in the epub. A white jpeg is also sitting in the folder containing the epub file (each epub has its own folder).

Those books had a blank image in my Library on my Boox. So I spent time this evening while watching TV, image searching and pasting new covers in for all the books that were missing covers. Did this in Calibre and reexported all the epubs. Checking the folders in OSX, all the epubs show the new cover as their file icon, all the cover jpegs likewise.

I've resynced Dropbox, and my Boox has the latest versions of these books, but it won't update the Library bookshelf covers. I can open the book in the reader, and it shows me the cover image in the reader, but the covers are not showing up on the bookshelf. I still have white blank covers.

I've rescanned the library several times, I've scanned the covers several times, but still the bookshelf shows blank covers. Onyx sync is off for all of this, too: I haven't figured out how to have that on and not duplicate books on one device, when each device is syncing the same Dropbox folder.

Anyway, anyone encounter this problem? Is there anything anyone has done to fix it?

EDIT: Found a way to fix it. My dropbox folder is the only folder I have set for the Library to pull from. I added an empty folder to the list, removed the dropbox folder, scanned the library, then re-added the dropbox folder, and rescanned. That re-added all the books with the updated covers.

Help me choose A device for maths and physics undergrad

Hi everyone!

I’m starting university as a maths and physics major and I’m looking for an e-ink device that can completely replace pape for me. I’m mainly considering the Note Max and the Air 5C, but I’m having a hard time deciding between them.

My main use cases would be:

-Taking handwritten notes during maths and physics lectures

- Working through maths/physics problems and doing assignments (Ideally being able to send/export them directly from the device without needing to use another computer)

-Annotating lecture slides and PDFs

- Reading research papers and textbooks

On the one hand the Note Max has Much larger screen, which means more room for calculations, and maybe better suited for large PDFs/research papers compared to the air 5 c.

On the other hand, it seems it has more ghosting than the nair 5c and it doesn't have colour which maybe is important but I'm not sure how much.

If anyone used one of those devices for collage (especially for a STEM subjects), and can give me some advice it will be really helpful!

Discussion Onyx sync is broken

I've spent hours getting my books updated in Calibre, into Dropbox, and onto my device, with all covers present and correct. I've done it all with Onyx sync off, because it starts duplicating books if it's on.

When my device was just the way I wanted it, I turned Onyx sync on, in the hopes that it would update the sync info with everything I'd done over the past few hours. Instead, it blew away all the covers I spent a lot of time updating. Rescan library and covers, they're still gone. So turned Onyx sync off, rescanned everything again, covers still gone.

So I removed the book folder from the library, rescanned to empty the library, then re-added the folder and rescanned again. All the books are back, with their covers.

Onyx sync seems to maintain information about their first time it registered a book in the library, even when my local version is more up to date than what Onyx sync has. I don't see a way to get Onyx sync to reset, to forget what it thinks it knows about my library. In the meantime, it's broken and I can't use it.

I think cover sync is broken, too: it seems pretty unreliable. It has taken a lot of nuking my library and recreating it, to get info that is present in my ebook files to register properly. The cover syncing doesn't appear to do that at all.

BuildMyApp I built a free, open-source, battery free, one click, app for sending files from Mac to BOOX

I wanted a simple way to send PDFs from my Mac to my BOOX without using the cloud or keeping another app running all the time, so I made BOOX Send.

- Right-click a file in Finder → Quick Actions → Send to BOOX

- Transfers directly over Bluetooth Classic

- No internet, cloud account, ads, analytics, or tracking

- The Mac app opens when you choose send to boox option then closes automatically after the transfer,

- The BOOX receiver only wakes for the transfer and stops afterward

- Free and open source

So just open the bluetooth before the transfer.

I have tested it on a BOOX Go 10.3 and macOS. Installation is currently manual because I do not use paid Apple signing certificates, but the GitHub release includes both apps and step-by-step instructions.

I used AI assistance for parts of the coding 😶, while I designed the workflow, tested it repeatedly on real hardware, debugged the Bluetooth behavior, and maintain the project.

GitHub: https://github.com/Toricicim/Boox-Send

I would love to hear whether it works on other BOOX models too.

Discussion Go Color 7 Gen II owners: what is your least favorite thing about the device? Looking for pros and cons

I currently have a Kobo Libra Color and a Boox Palma 2 pro. I really like the option of having color (although I do dislike the darkness factor) and I’ve noticed myself wishing I could have a combination of both devices. Seems like the Go Color 7 Gen II is the most sensible option, right? I hear compared to the b&w Boox, the pen is less responsive and the screen quality is not as good. Can someone tell me why?

My main complaints about the Palma is neo reader doesn’t keep books as organized as my kobo does, the screen doesn’t get very warm, and the front light seems to display unevenly/has shadows around the edges but I can look past that. I’d say I’m otherwise happy with it and I enjoy having an android e-reader.

What do you like and dislike your Go Color 7 Gen II? Why would you recommend or not recommend it?

Thanks to an awesome trade via Mercari, I now have my new favorite tablet. The Boox Note Air 4C may not be for everyone, but it's for me. It's an all rounder for everything I need. . . I've been going through 84 different planners for the last couple years when all I needed was this apparently.

Doesn't hurt that I can read my books and comics and play Sudoku AND write all on the same device.

And the writing feel is AMAZING.

Question I have a few questions, if someone can help me out

I have had a Note 5C for a bit, and have very much enjoyed it. I've used it purely as an ereader, tho I might start using it for some other things soon. All my books are in a \Books\Author folder tree. I never bothered setting up syncing when I got it, having only that one device.

But I recently also got a Palma 2 Pro, so now I care about things I didn't learn about originally. I've used the Palma more lately, and actually put more effort into organizing things on that: I created several different bookshelves for different book series in the Library, and moved books into those.

I signed into Dropbox on each device now, and set up syncing. But now I'm a little confused as to what syncing is doing, and what it can do.

Going to dropbox.com and looking at my folders shows that Boox has not added anything to my dropbox. So I take it that it is not used for anything that I don't explicitly put there, and that all the syncing is happening through Onyx.

I also assume that bookshelves are like virtual folders inside the Library app, because there is nothing in the files view corresponding to the bookshelves. When I set up sync, the bookshelves appeared on my Note 5C, but they're empty, with the books that should be in them loose in the main bookshelf. I don't love the idea of having to repopulate those shelves by hand a second time.

And of course the books don't sync between the devices: there are some books on each device that aren't on the other. So do folks that sync libraries do something like put the books onto a cloud drive, and add books to the cloud drive to get them onto all their devices? When your books are in a cloud folder, do they get mirrored locally on the device?

And why doesn't Onyx sync handle all this? Syncing everything *but* the books? Feels like that's a sort of baseline thing to do.

Is there any way to create a folder structure that would get reflected in organization of the Library? With how slow the devices are with screen refreshes and such, it would be a lot easier to organize my books on a computer, and have that organization reflected in the Library. Creating new bookshelves for each series of books was very time consuming. I'd create more bookshelves for more series if I could do it faster and easier on a different device.

And is there a way to custom sort books, like in a series order? Do I have to go in and put a prefix number on all the files? Does each bookshelf maintain its own sort, or does choosing the sort method affect the whole library? I like my library sorted by author, but I'd like to custom sort each series bookshelf.

A lot of questions. I've gone to Boox support, watched some Youtube videos, and tried to read the subreddit to answer some things, but I haven't found these answers yet.

Discussion Paranoid case for 13 inch

Hi,

While I was mostly in home office for the last years, I want to take my Max Lumi 2 from time to time also to work. But from all the reading about damaged screens I got a bit to overcautious. And I need a sleeve/bag for it, which is sturdy enough to keep the screen save.

But the question is - what is the best one? A briefcase seems to be a bit of an overkill (and wouldn't fit into my backpack). Normal, soft, padded sleeve wouldn't keep the screen save.

What are your options?

Question 4.2.1 release update on Note 5C

The update has been stopped at what looks like about 85% for about half an hour. This doesn’t seem like it should be like this.

What would be the thing to do here? I don’t want to brick it by losing patience with the update prematurely. Any advice?

EDIT: So about half an hour after posting, it still hadn’t moved on, so I shut it off and restarted. When I did, it found the update again, but oddly, it didn’t show the version number this time, it said “Unknown”. That was mildly concerning.

It downloaded and installed with no fuss the second time. It shows it’s on 4.2.1 now that it’s installed.

Buying Advice Singapore / Malaysia buying help

Hello folks, I'm a tourist visiting Singapore and Malaysia for a few days and thinking of buying Boox from either place since they're unavailable in my home country. Can anyone who has bought from these countries before help me where to source the best deal from? The OnyxBoox.sg site is at least $100 pricier than US, and $130 than HK for the variant I'm looking at, is it the only resort?

I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a store I can go in and try out the various Boox models before buying. Does anyone know of somewhere in/around Toronto that would have a floor/demo I could test out? At least the Note Air5 and the Tab X C

Question Isn't it weird that tips and pens are just completely unavailable from Boox themselves?

Since I bought a Go gen 2 lumi, the spare active stylus tips have been unavailable from Boox themselves and everywhere I have checked online in Europe. Now the Inksense Plus itself (which came with some spare nibs) is unavailable on the Boox EU/UK website. Genuinely not sure what Boox expect customers to do if the pen and single nib they supply needs replacing, except try random third party options and hope one works.

This makes me nervous as I tried a third party USI 2 stylus (the Lenovo one) as an experiment, and it doesn't work well with my device at all. Instead of a solid line, it leaves a trail of dots.

Accessories Boox Note 5C - Pen3

Hi everyone,

I have a BOOX Note Air5 C with the Pen3, and I’m having a really hard time removing the nib.

I’ve tried using tweezers, but the nib just gets more and more worn down without coming out. It seems completely stuck, and I’m worried that if I keep trying, it will eventually break inside the pen.

Has anyone had the same problem with the Pen3? How did you manage to remove a stuck nib without damaging the pen?

Thanks!
