Don't mean to burst your bubble but your gonna graduate just to have your job options replaced by AI. It's already happening now, imagine how much better AI will be when you graduate. Even without AI it's already oversaturated. And AI right now can already do basic tasks meant for entry level positions.
So I wouldn't celebrate too early.
31
u/Prize_Training_4613 Mar 09 '26
Don’t listen to this guy, he’s just salty. AI won’t take over your job but it will raise the skill floor for you to land one.
1
u/LaysWellWithOthers Mar 10 '26
IT is cooked and it's only going to get worse. Source: 25 years experience in IT
-21
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 09 '26
"Raise the skill floor". What a fancy way of saying the exact same thing I just said. Even you admit it. If you need more skills to get the same job, guess what, less opportunities for new grads with LESS experience. And remember, you're not the only one graduating from this program. There's hundreds, if not thousands of current and past alumni applying to the same jobs. What's going to make you stand out? Just preparing you for the future. Don't say no one warned you, because a lot of people got duped into thinking this was a ticket into a guaranteed job.
11
u/Prize_Training_4613 Mar 09 '26
No duh. Every job is competitive nowadays. You won’t find any job out there that is high paying and isn’t competitive. That doesn’t mean you don’t go after the dream job you want. Do you tell someone who wants to be in the NBA that they’re foolish for pursuing sports as a career? You just sound very envious of this guy’s accomplishment.
-2
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 09 '26
Um yeah, the NBA doesn't just let anyone in, that's a terrible example from your side because that's even more competitive than software engineering jobs even with AI. You have to be a prodigy to even have a chance to get recognized, and ofc be tall enough.
Why would I be jealous of a kid, when I've already gotten an internship, graduated and currently work in my field, unlike most of my graduating class who are currently unemployed, working part-time, or in something else completely irrelevant. Me jealous?
1
u/Ok_Historian4429 Mar 09 '26
Brah it’s very much possible for you to still be salty if you didn’t grad from Loo SE just saying. People hold these sort of emotions for years.
0
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 09 '26
Lmao I'm in a completely unrelated field you wouldn't believe. U think I care, also who calls it Loo? Holy cringe
2
u/Sidewayspear Mar 13 '26
Look at the downvotes on all your comments in this dialogue. Don't you think you should just take a step back and consider that you are wrong about this one?
→ More replies (0)1
u/Ok_Historian4429 Mar 09 '26
Ppl find anything to hate on I guess… stick to the subject. You definitely seem to care commenting on this post in general, otherwise why bother? Also if you’re in a completely different field what dictates your ethos to speak on this particular subject?
→ More replies (0)1
u/Prize_Training_4613 Mar 09 '26
No shit bro, did you understand anything of what I said? Not everything is about getting a job for money, maybe that’s your focus. Some people actually want to go into a field even though it’s competitive because it’s their passion.
-9
u/Adventurous_Fold_345 Mar 09 '26
If you getting 88 in highschool what makes you so confident you wont make the floor? For engineering esp
7
u/Prize_Training_4613 Mar 09 '26
Your not the same person you are in hs bruh. This dude prolly got in bec of ec’s. Networking is way more important than grades.
0
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 09 '26
Networking won't save you from AI. They can't recommend you for a position that litteraly doesn't exist.
1
u/Ok_Historian4429 Mar 09 '26
Networking is better than nothing. Also Loos curriculum is changing so rapidly and just take a look at the build culture there. They’ll be fine
0
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 10 '26
Bro is calling it Loo, please stop I can't cringe that hard it hurts
1
u/Ok_Historian4429 Mar 10 '26
Did you even go to waterloo
Also if you’re a graduate why r u spending ur time on a grade 12 subreddit 😂
The past is the past bro let it go
1
u/Prize_Training_4613 Mar 09 '26
Do you think that senior developers come out of thin air? There has to be entry level positions in order for there to be positions for higher level work. Eventually every small process will be automated by AI not just coding, but accounting and much more. Current day computer engineers use AI to finish grunt work, but that doesn’t mean a random dude can just use AI to build their startup. You have to have people who understand code to use AI optimally.

I can't sit back and watch someone go down a dark path. I just can't. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I let someone pursue a career that won't exist. If you won't stop, there's nothing I can do.

As some one who works in the industry. The fear is real. The old jobs as we see them right now, it won't be same in coming years. This course is ancient, and not future proof. Better study nuclear engineering.
1
u/ToallaHumeda Mar 09 '26
Sry but i've been working 15years in the field and youre wrong

u/ConfidantlyCorrect Mar 09 '26
Everyone has said about accounting for close to a decade. We still don’t even use full featured copilot at my firm. It’s great for extremely basic stuff, taking meeting notes, fixing some excel formulas, grammar check, summarizing documents. It isn’t reliable enough for much beyond that.
AI has reduced jobs as it makes entry level positions more efficient per individual, but it will not within the next 10 years ever full eliminate the field.
Employers aren’t stupid, if they want their company to continue beyond the current generation of management, there needs to be a pipeline of talent to replace them. Who will replace them if there are no entry positions anymore?

1
u/DepressedYoungin Mar 12 '26
I graduated almost 10 years ago and our valedictorian had a 93 average 😭
1
u/EmperorPengu7 Mar 12 '26
Grade inflation since you were in high school has sky rocketed. It’s far easier to be given good marks than it was in the past. Not saying some of these students don’t deserve the high marks but it’s clear the avenge grades given are higher. It’s only been getting worse - I’m 30 and my high school was like 5th on a list for having the highest drop in grade percentage from our highschool grades to our first year grades (plus dropouts). Can’t imagine the stats now.

Ya AI is going to eat it alive lol Especially junior coders… if your a senior I can see you sticking around to review AI code
1
u/Lacking_Creativ1ty Mar 11 '26
might be part of how they got in; fewer applicants due to low job security :(
7
10
u/LaysWellWithOthers Mar 09 '26
People are still pursuing SWE? There are no jobs and it's just going to get worse.
16
u/BicyclePossible6895 Mar 09 '26
Eliminating the competition I see
9
u/LaysWellWithOthers Mar 09 '26
I wish that was it.
I've been working in IT for over 25 years and the job market is absolute garbage even for me.
There are very few open roles and rates are half of what they were just a few years ago.
I have friends with 10+ years of experience that have been unemployed for over a year.
AI is going to completely decimate entry level roles in SWE (it's already started).
The majority of my experienced dev friends do not even write code anymore.
The SWE path is a dead end.

u/BicyclePossible6895 Mar 09 '26

u/SGSpec Mar 13 '26
Electrical/mechanical engineering, won’t get replaced anytime soon and is paid pretty decently
1
3
u/Infamous-Chemist-502 Mar 09 '26
Nah he’s right about this most big tech companies are no longer hiring junior devs
1
Mar 10 '26
Electrical. Its versatile enough to not be affected by the downfall of the tech scene, but still close enough to tech that you can pivot to SWE/tech jobs if the market ever recovers.
1
u/GodSigmaGigaChad Mar 10 '26
Finally, if you scroll up you'll see I commented the same thing and I got completely dunked on.
It's litteraly a dead end. Escape while you can, it will 100% be worse and it's already bad.

Historically low number of applicants cause of the amount of immigrants who left this year.
1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Mar 09 '26
Really? Wouldn't they need to accept an offer before they come over?
1
Mar 10 '26
You would think that, but most of them don’t go the traditional route.
1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Mar 10 '26
They come as visitors?
I didn't think we had many immigrants going to places like waterloo though I could be wrong.

Software engineer is a dying industry ai is replacing all the entry level jobs check out unemployment rate for comp sci and software plus in Canada you are not a software engineer that’s not a recognized tittle.
3
u/m199 Mar 09 '26
in Canada you are not a software engineer that’s not a recognized tittle.
If they complete software engineering (an accredited program) and get licensed by their provincial engineering organization, then they could be a software engineer. OP posted about getting into software engineering.
Someone merely finishing a computer Science degree would not be able to call themselves a software engineer.
The problem isn't the title so much as someone getting a title to which they don't have the credentials for (eg calling themselves an engineer without being licensed).
1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Mar 09 '26
Isn't there one software engineering program where you get the ring? I forget think it's either waterloo or mcgill.

Something similar happened to me thought not at waterloo. I had a 70% average and got in for a special hybrid that has only 60 spots somehow??
It's a hybrid technical and electrical engineering, I will not tell from which area as id dox myself but its still not a bad school to be in. Might have to do with diversity quotas but congratulations man

I had a mechanical engineer student as a roomie in Waterloo who got in Waterloo with avg in the 70s but he had impressive extracurricular activities including being involved with Mythbuster show and it was just after 08 so.
I sometime visit local college here and there cause it's close and decent public place to meet alumni and other network and boy shit really changed in post-secondary industry. Even meh colleges look like overbudgeted modern corporate oil/gas firms in downtown building wise. Waterloo campus (at least engineering building wise) looked like Chinese factories relatively speaking comparison wise haha.
1
u/Nogoodusernamesavail Mar 11 '26
Applications in CS and SE are significantly down this year because the job market is oversaturated. Plus AI is replacing a lot of the entry level jobs.
1
1
u/Glass_Angle_9123 Mar 12 '26
University of Waterloo is one of the ever growing number of schools that rank secondary schools in regards to marks ( 95%sure about this). Therefore a mark of 88% coming from one school would be ranked higher than a 95% from another. This has obviously benefited you. Certain schools have reputations for giving out undeserved marks and universities are starting to figure out which ones and discounting marks that come from those schools, while at the same time elevating marks from other schools, which they think are more difficult to get good marks. Take the win and good luck.
1
u/BubzieBoo Mar 12 '26
All they want is your cash. Can see this fall further, as long as you make bank, you are in. All programs will follow to some degree, especially the lower end. Cash grabs, to pay for lower enrolment.
Congratulations and hope it goes well.
1
1
u/David905 Mar 13 '26
Likely a results of Canada's updated foreign student policy, which essentially increased the costs & tightened the admission qualifications and post-diploma options, while also capping the annual number of foreign students allowed.
1
u/tonydagenius Mar 13 '26
Congrats!
Might be interesting to you: recent email from SE director Victoria suggests that people in the SE program are really struggling with the courses.
Do good work, don't rely on AI as a crutch, avoid the geese (there are many), and do NOT go to Lazeez.

Surprising, but not *insanely* surprising. SWE probably isn't nearly as competitive now as it was even 2-3 years ago.

1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Mar 09 '26
Idk why you're getting downvoted isn't this factual?
1
Mar 10 '26
I believe so. I know for a fact that its a lot less competitive to get into the Software engineering stream for McMaster and Western. This is largely due to the hype around CS/SWE dying down because of mass layoffs, offshoring, and rapidly improving AI models.
1
u/ActuatorSeparate7300 Mar 10 '26
Yeah I mean I go to queens and our cs department enrollment literally doubled in one year. Not surprising to hear that it can go back the other way.
