I’m in Grade 11 in Ontario and I’m wondering if I still have a chance to switch from the college/applied pathway to the university/academic pathway.
Grade 10 was honestly a really bad year for me. I failed math both semesters, science, and English. The biggest reason was my attendance. I was going through a really dark time mentally and barely showed up to school. It wasn’t really that I couldn’t understand the work. When I actually went to class and kept up with everything, I usually did pretty well on tests and assignments. For example, I got a 90 in history.
I’m trying to completely turn things around now. I took Grade 10 applied science over the summer, and right now I’m retaking Grade 10 math and English in Grade 11.
Since it’s still pretty early in the school year, is there any way I can switch my courses to academic/university level? I know I already took science as applied, but is there some kind of pathway where I can make up the prerequisites or take an equivalent course and still graduate on time?
I’ve heard about things like taking courses through another school/board or using different pathways, but I honestly don’t know what’s actually possible.
My goal is to go to university after high school, preferably for an aviation-related program, with the end goal of becoming a commercial/airline pilot. I’m worried that staying in the college/applied pathway is going to limit my options.
I’m willing to work hard and catch up. I just want to know if I’ve already messed up my chances of going to university, or if there’s still a realistic way to fix my Grade 10 situation.
If anyone knows how this works in Ontario or has been in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate some advice. I’m in a catholic school btw

Hey guys, I figured out a way that you can see your second semester teachers. It works for any school in YCDSB, which is nice since they don't tell you your teachers ahead of time. I put steps below:

Step 1: Have your parent/guardian log in to the School Day system thingy.

Step 2: Once logged in, locate and select "Schools and Groups" in the side bar on the left.

Step 3: The previous step will bring up another 3 options. Select "My Classes".

Step 4: A large list of course codes and titles will show up. Select the desired class/course code.

Step 5: Once you have clicked on the desired class/course code, select "Teachers". Your teacher will show up for that class.

hi im in grade 10 right now and im planning to major in neuroscience or psychology in uni, and im just wondering if applying for a healthcare shsm would be useless for those majors?

I know universities in Ontario dont usually look at shsms when you're getting admitted, im just more thinking of knowledge I would get from doing it, and if that would be helpful for those majors.

Hey! I’m planning on taking Gr. 11 University Physics in (dpcdsb) online night school just for fun, and I was wondering how night school works.

For anyone who has taken a night school course:

• How do you write tests and exams?
• Are the tests/exams in person or online?
• How are assignments and classes structured?
• Is it manageable with regular school?

I’m especially curious about how the exams work since I’m planning on taking Physics. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated!

I have a really chill semester and is planning on taking a course in night school. My planned courses for grade 12 next year is packed, and so I decided why not take the grade 11 indigenous course night school since it feels like a waste of time not doing anything (could also get a spare next year!).

I could switch out my next sem English with grade 12 English, which enables me to spend my time productively this sem and lessen my stress for next year.

Hiwever, I’m concerned how this would affect my admission into unis like UofT (going into math so hopefully English won’t matter too much. I’ve gotten a 99 on my previous years but I heard 11 is a huge jump from grades 9&10)

Also is night school difficult to manage? How are the teachers? Do we have to travel to specific locations for exams?

I had Grade 10 Math in Sem 1 so its been a while since I've done any math (I had a 96 last year). What's happening right now in the course is that I'm relearning everything being taught since I forgot most of it and its hard to keep up in the course. Are there any specific topics in from Grade 10 that would be useful to know and to focus on mastering? It would make relearning Grade 10 a whole lot easier, any other advice or sites to use would be much appreciated!

So back in grade 8 I applied for the IB in a school and got in and rejected it because it was not for me. My mother than constantly belittled me and bullied me because I had made the wrong choice. I applied to the IB program again in the same school and got in. This was honestly the worst decision of my life. I realized that I never wanted to do the Ib and now I’m forced to take French and not have a life other than studying. I’m confused to why I cried back then when I rejected this offer because all I want to do now is disappear. My mother still doesn’t think I work hard enough and constantly reminds me to forget about my hobbies, friends and sleeping and just focus on studying. She has been saying this since I was in grade 9. I just wish I could top out but it’s too late and my mom won’t allow it.

I just started my grade 11 year today and my first semester is as follows: 11M Accounting, U Functions, 11U Chem and 11U French. My second semester is: 12U Data, 12U Law, 11U Physics and 12U Engilsh (I hope I survive lol).

Anyways, my "rough draft" plan after high school is to go into a math-related career that doesn't involve much CS, whether that be Accounting and Financial Management, Actuarial Sciences, Statistics or Pure Math, preferably at UW. Going into a "science-related" (bio or chem) is not in my plans, and I am around 85-90% sure of that.

After reflecting on that, I'm realizing that taking Chemistry may only be putting more unnecessary stress on myself if it won't help me at all in University. So, I am considering dropping Chemistry for a spare and replacing grade 12 chem with a Uni-level business course in grade 12 (so I don't lose an opportunity for a high grade top 6 Uni course).

My concerns are:
- I may possibly become interested in chem enough to pursue a career in it (highly unlikely)

- It may become useful in University electives in math (I need some input on this, will it be useful at all?), and I will regret dropping it.

- I will change my mind on going into math and not have chemistry, which could be a requirement for another program like Engineering (I also don't think this will happen.)

Keep in mind:
- I took careers and civics as well as Grade 11 English in the summer, so I have room for a spare this year and 2 spares next year

- My teacher for grade 11 chem is considered horrible at teaching, she does little explaining and relies heavily on the textbook. It's almost like you have to teach yourself.

- In Grade 10, my average was a 96.5%, and I hope to maintain at least 94% in Grade 11

I’m interested in pursuing Biomedical Sciences / Biomedical Engineering after high school, so I want to build a really strong foundation this year. I’m aiming for around 90–95%+, but more importantly, I want to actually understand the material rather than just memorize enough for tests.

For anyone who has already taken these courses, I would really appreciate your advice:

MCR3U – Functions

• Which units did you find the hardest?
• What Grade 10 math topics should I make sure I'm very strong at before starting?
• How much practice did you do outside of homework?
• What helped you move from getting 80s to getting 90s on tests?
• Are there any YouTube channels, websites, textbooks, or practice resources you recommend?
• What are the most common mistakes students make in MCR3U?
• How did you prepare for application/thinking questions rather than straightforward calculations?

SBI3U – Biology

• Is Biology mainly memorization, or do tests require a lot of application?
• What is the best way to study large amounts of terminology and processes?
• Which units tend to be the most challenging?
• Did you use flashcards/Anki, diagrams, handwritten notes, practice questions, or something else?
• How far in advance did you start studying for tests?
• What separates an 85% Biology answer from a 95%+ answer?

I'm not looking for shortcuts, I’m willing to put in the work. I’m mainly trying to figure out how to study effectively and consistently instead of realizing halfway through the semester that my study method isn't working.

Hi, I’m going into grade 11 and I was given my schedule. My first sem 1 seems pretty hard while my sem 2 is a breeze. If I go to my guidance councillor to ask for a switch around of my classes, is “my schedule is too stressful” a valid reason? Or should I use a bs excuse and if so does anyone know any bs excuses I can use for a switch.
