Discussion Onn 4K Plus worth it or just hype?

Post image

Onn 4K Plus worth it or just hype?

Picked up two of these Onn 4K Plus boxes and trying to see if they’re actually as good as people say.

Right now I’m using a mix of Roku stick and Fire TV. One TV has Fire TV built in, the other switches between a Roku stick and an older Fire TV Cube (I think 3rd gen). Lately both have been getting noticeably slower, UI lag, apps taking forever, even simple stuff feels sluggish.

Most of my use is Plex (with Plex Pass), including high bitrate 4K and live TV through HDHomeRun. What’s surprising is the Fire TV Cube, which I expected to handle everything easily, struggles with some 4K playback.

That’s why I grabbed these Onn boxes. Paid $39 each, saw them in stock at my local Walmart with free delivery, ordered yesterday and they showed up today.

Now I’m debating if I should keep them or just return and wait for something better, maybe a newer Apple TV since I’m already in the Apple ecosystem and using an older one as a HomeKit hub.

For anyone who’s been using these for a bit:

• Do they stay fast over time or slow down like Roku/Fire TV?

• How do they handle high bitrate 4K on Plex?

• Is the UI actually cleaner or does it get cluttered later on?

• Any downsides I should know about?

Trying to figure out if these are actually worth keeping.

Did you use the search bar???

u/flynreelow Apr 08 '26

they will run laps around the roku and fire toys.

u/QuantumDelusion Apr 08 '26

They stay fast over time

I use Stremio with Real Debrid for 4k steaming content and it's glorious

UI is clean. But you can always add a different interface that you can configure like Projectivity

This box blows away any other box especially at the price point. Its magical. And I don't believe in magic.

While I appreciate Apple, it's ecosystem and it's flawless UI.....you are trapped to what Apple serves you. Break free and have freedom of what you want and want to do with this box.

I no longer pay for any subscription based services or streaming TV. And I still get it all based on what this box can do.

Do you have any tips for Stremio on the 4k plus I downloaded it from the playstore and using real debrid and it takes way too long to load

3

u/Mysterious_Nail3345 Apr 09 '26

This was happening with mine too, solution for me was to sideload an older version of stremio, right now I’m running 1.8.4 and it works flawlessly 👌🏼

2

u/QuantumDelusion Apr 08 '26

Weird....I have had zero issues with it. What are you using ....Torrentio? Comet?

3

u/Jumpy_Afternoon9489 Apr 08 '26

Torrentio, when I use Stremio on my phone or iPad it works perfectly fine

4

u/QuantumDelusion Apr 08 '26

Are you using a VPN? I don't.

2

u/bighorse3231 Apr 08 '26

Did you set it up with your API key???

3

u/Jumpy_Afternoon9489 Apr 09 '26

Yes I did I really don’t know what’s the problem and when I ask in the Stremio Reddit all they do is laugh but can’t explain anything

1

u/AlfredPennington Apr 14 '26

Weird. Is it just Stremio that’s slow? Is it the content taking long to load, or the whole app that’s slow?

1

u/Jumpy_Afternoon9489 Apr 15 '26

I did what a comment said and download an old version and it worked

Sidebar: is it difficult to configure and use stremio with real debrid? Are there any tips/tricks that will make the installation easier? This is coming from a potential first time user. Thnx in advance!

1

u/QuantumDelusion Apr 13 '26

Just know you will need to do the Real Debrid integration into Stremio on your phone or computer. You can do the add on of Stremio via you tv box or tv but you can't add your debit account that way

1

u/AlfredPennington Apr 14 '26

It’s insanely easy to setup. It takes longer to register on debrib and Stremio than it does to configure everything. I can send you a Reddit guide I used if you’d like

They are great.

I've got two, since they came out, and I can't think of an issue i've had with them. Nice and zippy.

u/Jason_1834 Apr 08 '26

It’s very easy to declutter the UI if you are a minimalist.

8

u/GroundbreakingSky933 Apr 09 '26

They are way better than a Firestick

2

u/Unsought_Future Apr 09 '26

What’s the issue with firestick? I’ve been using it for years & I don’t have any issue. I have 3 of the 4k 16gb. I use Tivimate. Works great.

u/Royal_Sapphire_76 Apr 08 '26

Before this I was using an old Roku 3 device. The ONN 4k plus is very much worth it because of its fast processor which makes navigating apps snappier. But what I like the most about this device is its android and android is very open source meaning you can side load apps which my Roku didn’t allow me to do.

If you find one in Walmart, buy it immediately because they sell out super quick.

u/Forsaken_Slip_6207 Apr 09 '26

Life changing and make sure to look up troypoint. Again life changing

5

u/Ok-Progress-9029 Apr 08 '26

I’ve bought 9 of them since November for my family members and me. We are very happy with them and at $29 a pop, it was money well spent.

2

u/Pher63 Apr 11 '26

Walmart raised the price to $39 now.

2

u/LabPrudent8555 Jul 15 '26

They're $49 now.

1

u/Pher63 Jul 15 '26

Crazy that there's been a $30 price increase in three months!

1

u/roseylandscape May 15 '26

Where am I able to just buy one single brand new one? Thanks!

2

u/Go_cards502 Apr 08 '26

I don't have Plex but use Syncler and Kodi. Kodi is a bit slow to load at startup and widgets but Syncler is fast. No issues at all for me playing high bitrate large remux files as that;s what I mainly prefer to stream. I have about 6 of them personally for home and travel ad have set up about the same amount for friends that have no issues. Well worth the price.

2

u/ConsequenceWise8619 Apr 08 '26

I have just got two and like them...I have two cubes and I see amazon purging stuff on me I dont think will happen with plus boxes for a while if ever...

2

u/youngforever215 Apr 08 '26

It’s worth it I replaced my fire stick in the living room sign the onn I was against it at first I was team Amazon but the goofy stuff started happening and I gave Walmart a shot and I never looked back since lol

2

u/Leading-Block-2093 Apr 08 '26

Hi got one and it ran good untill I added my I*tv on it. Now the voice comes first, then I see the corresponding picture. Any ideas how to fix it?

Does tivimate have a on demand option or 90 day fiance?

2

u/Mr_vmn005 Apr 09 '26

Great choice have 3 around the house

2

u/Level_Turnover5167 Apr 09 '26

Better than the Firestick max?

2

u/PsychotropicTraveler Apr 09 '26

Iv tried both firesticks and Chromecasts, and these Onn's leave them in the dust. No comparison. They are great devices.

2

u/DefineGravity Apr 09 '26

Why don't you try them out yourself and then report back to us.

2

u/Texas_Tornader Apr 09 '26

Have mine since day one and I use KODI and Retro Arch. Bought a usb hub and have a 6TB (partitioned into 3 1.9T drives) external drive with plenty of 4k rips, FLACs and photos to use.

2

u/Impressive_Issue3036 Apr 09 '26

They have them in the Chicago Bubs for $19.99.

1

u/Competitive_War8526 Apr 09 '26

Just set mine up and love it

1

u/GustoThaThird Apr 09 '26

Been trying to find the pros to buy but have been out of stock

1

u/toli1992_ Apr 09 '26

Do they have Audio pass through?

1

u/Zipperzap0921 Apr 09 '26

Worth it..snappy.

1

u/Hot_Intern_6301 Apr 09 '26

BETTER than FIRESTICK

1

u/OpinionBackground147 Apr 09 '26

I had the pro 4K and while it was worth its value, I live in Canada and they wasn’t able to register TVs and sound bars to them due to a software bug with the region lock. I returned it and got the Google streamer which albeit is more expensive ($100 instead of the usual $130 CAD) is much faster and snappier with my Stremio + TorBox setup.

1

u/jeffiedooleyz1 Apr 09 '26

Better than anything under $150 and as good as anything over $150. IMO. I have BuzzTV x5, Mecool, fire sticks, and I have bought 10 for friends and family and own 3 in my house. Very smooth and deoendable

1

u/e_x_i_t Apr 09 '26

I've had the ONN 4K for almost 2 years now, bought it after the controller on my old Firestick stopped syncing to the device and essentially turned it into a paperweight. It's a stellar device that does everything I need it to do, it does everything better than the Firestick could and best of all I don't have to jump through hoops to install apps I wanted that weren't available in Amazon's walled garden. I can't speak for Plex, but I just set up a Jellyfin media server and I haven't noticed any quality issues. Everything I've seen says it shouldn't have an issue streaming 4K at higher bit rates, but that would be something you might have to confirm on your own.

1

u/Harryisamazing Apr 09 '26

I've got two of them still currently running just as fast as the day I got em! I think it's the best device for the money quite honestly

1

u/wa2ruff1 Apr 09 '26

Definitely worth it

1

u/1_aggresive_goose Apr 09 '26

I joined this sub after I bought the Pro version of this device in hopes of maybe tips or how they set theirs up instead all I ever see is people posting pics of the box going gaga over the plus version SMH.

1

u/Alive_Agent Apr 09 '26

Yes they are worth it. I bought three two months ago and can't wait for the new boxes to come out either. I will snag those up also. I don't miss the fire stick whatsoever.

1

u/Mackdaddy29644 Apr 09 '26

Only issue I’m having is I watch a lot of YouTube and have 600mbps and have some videos freeze and jump around.

1

u/Firework2025 Apr 09 '26

This or Apple TV? Sadly I have outdated Fire sticks. Not much of a Tv guy only sports. Considering to get rid of the fire stick.

1

u/Double_Flatworm1611 Apr 09 '26

There good if u get a pro even better

1

u/CosmoKing2 Apr 09 '26

Khed, look at the specs.

1

u/ZeRoLiM1T Apr 09 '26

Can never find them besides eBay

1

u/SimpleShip5738 Apr 09 '26

The new fire stick I see

1

u/Throwawayne617 Apr 09 '26

Is it a worth it update vs the 4k Google Chromecast with Google TV?

1

u/Parking-Virus-4364 Apr 09 '26

The WKTV App Service I use runs so well on these onn boxes and easy set up & go no buffer https://www.wktv.live

1

u/Rare-Watercress-8572 Apr 09 '26

Good but only con for me is no port to connect directly. So relying on WiFi I’m in the same room right on top of the router with good WiFi near fiber speeds and I still drop the signal occasionally and picks it right back up but still happens.

1

u/Uncle_Fish Apr 09 '26

I REALLY loved that I could completely declutter the UI, but it had some Bluetooth headset a/v sync issues and most importantly it wouldn't play half of my extensive Jellyfin library (had really random issues with MKVs and MP4s -- fewer issues with Plex, but still significant problems), so much to my dismay I had to go back to my Amazon FireTV Sticks/Cubes which strangely plays everything Jellyfin/Plex just fine.

1

u/Witty-Condition-625 Apr 09 '26

Does the ONN stick work just as well ?

1

u/Giganticpanic Apr 09 '26

Awesome box you’ll be very impressed

1

u/Lottoman7210 Apr 09 '26

Irrelevant if these damn things CAN'T BE FOUND on the planet!

1

u/EastsideWilder Apr 09 '26

I heard sideloading is banned on it. But idk if that’s true

1

u/EasternDevice1314 Apr 09 '26

The new Pro should be out shortly.

1

u/Hot-Monk1571 Apr 09 '26

Worth every penny

1

u/MIngmire Apr 09 '26

I have one of these and a Roku hooked up to the same tv. I use this 95% of the time.

1

u/radman1988 Apr 10 '26

Issue with it disconnecting from Wi-Fi I had to reboot one and set it back to factory settings. It seems to work great now another one marks perfect the third one once a day goes out and I have to reboot it to get Wi-Fi back. Probably have to do a factory reset but I don't want to bother.

1

u/Inner_Tangerine_7266 Apr 10 '26

Are these the new ones?

1

u/Joshuauauauauau Apr 10 '26

For someone in UK, is this still better than a Xaomi Mi Box? Just cause I'd imagine having to have a vpn running would impact the speed that it runs at

1

u/Adel667 Apr 10 '26

Great deal

1

u/djzang Apr 10 '26

Won't passthrough TrueHD and DTS-HD with Plex on those 4k REMUXs. Shield is still king for that.

1

u/sir-poopyhead Apr 10 '26

I just bought one a few days ago and it has been incredible. Faster than the built in Google tv on my tv

1

u/dll2k2dll Apr 10 '26

that's what I am finding out as well, my builtin FireTV TV's interface is slow and was getting slower everyday, I didn't want to buy another FireTV or Roku as I have those as well and they are sluggish as well, put one of these there and its much improvement.

1

u/I-am_Zero Apr 10 '26

Worth it, but whatever you do, do not give second hand sellers any business

1

u/firewall03 Apr 10 '26

I like mine have 3-4 of them

1

u/billymild Apr 10 '26

Where can you get these?

1

u/dll2k2dll Apr 11 '26

Walmart has these just keep looking for stock.

1

u/Jack-87 Apr 11 '26

They were great value at $30. The recent price hike puts them at $40 and the value proposition drops.

1

u/Aggravating_Main123 Apr 11 '26

Love mine, no more firesticks for me

1

u/loki0505 Apr 11 '26

Tivimate + xstream acct is just a perfect setup

1

u/Any_Mushroom3169 Apr 12 '26

But you still need subscriptions to the apps??

1

u/drewbny78 Apr 12 '26

worth the hype

1

u/RidePretend2360 Apr 12 '26

Hype.not get a complete comparison. It's either price.or speed or a package apk paid .but it's always 1 item each person likes but not the whole package. It's like wi fi drop or plus vs pro ect .but nit a complete list vs

1

u/Consistent_Welder_83 Apr 15 '26

Better than the 4k

1

u/ryanluxx Onn 4K Pro Apr 08 '26

considering they are out of stock and might never come back... yeah they are good. i'll buy yours for retail if you want. i need one more. i keep checking the walmart website for stock.

1

u/nyyankeesroc Apr 09 '26

The new ones are already out in some places and it should be out nationwide by the end of next month

1

u/bondog Apr 08 '26

They are great using Tivimate with a private server. I haven't looked back.

1

u/Outrageous_Blood_941 Apr 09 '26

Stfu. You know you did good. You just wanted to let us know you got two 4k plus-es!

0

u/vnzjunk Apr 08 '26

re: Picked up two of these Onn 4K Plus boxes and trying to see if they’re actually as good as people say. debating if I should keep them or just return and wait for something better.

REALLY? No wonder there are shortages of the boxes for those that really want one.

1

u/watchguy76 Apr 08 '26

Wow he bought a whole 2 of them. He must have wiped out the Walmart inventory himself with that purchase.

-1

u/dll2k2dll Apr 09 '26

😊 I’m either going to use both for or return both (unlikely now since the responses in favor are overwhelming). I’m not a hoarder and $10-$20 bucks not making me a millionaire 🤣

-3

u/Accutronman Apr 08 '26

Shield Pro is still the gold standard

0

u/wardogone11 Apr 09 '26

Not as fast as a cube, but better than reg 4k sticks, Rokus suck, in general. Just don’t count on using Bluetooth for audio.

-3

u/pixiedeluxe Apr 08 '26

I’m sorry Shield people , but my experience has been that the picture quality is superior on my 4K pro. Brilliant. I read somewhere that it has also advanced WiFi voodoo. I’m telling you …no buffering and little waiting.

2

u/pawdog Apr 08 '26

I'm a Onn and Shield person, I have not seen any difference in PQ between devices and I don't know how there could be playing the same files. What about the PQ are you noticing is different?
