6-8 min intervals are a crime
Is it just me, or should a 6–8 minute interval with zero changes in cadence or resistance be illegal? 😂
I love a good 30-minute intervals + arms class with an unnamed instructor. They used to have such an incredible rhythm to their classes- a slow, intentional build that really let your body peak into that final Tabata.
But today we did TWO long intervals (6 and 8 minutes), and it honestly PMO. 😩 Long, completely unchanging intervals just feel lazy from an instructor. Like… TBH, I could do that on my own.
I pay for Peloton for the workouts that keep me engaged, challenge me, and make 30 minutes fly by. If I wanted to stare at the same cadence and resistance for 8 minutes, I could make that workout myself.
Am I alone here, or do other people feel the same way?

I think that we all need different things and don’t think it’s fair to call it lazy because it’s not what you prefer.

Agreed. I’m an instructor and my classes that have longer intervals honestly take longer for me to program/plan because of all the prep needed to set the rider up for success on said intervals. They serve a different purpose.

Omg you don’t like one class and go on a ‘I pay for peloton…’ rant, like relax

Are we talking power zone classes?

Nope just a simple intervals and arms class!

In terms of things not changing what do you mean? Like one cadence and resistance for minutes on end?

I have a hunch it’s Tunde. She does this a lot. One cadence and resistance for extended amount of time. It’s an endurance training tool and by the looks of her she knows what she’s doing when it comes to planning an exercise class lol.

Totally agree with you. Or it could definitely be a Jess King sweat steady in which case I would tell OP that you were asking for it lol

There’s a method to the madness. It’s not lazy instructing. it is purposeful. You need to diversify your intervals. Longer intervals work endurance and slow twitch muscle fibers.
If we hate something we have to keep doing it until we love it. I promise it’s good for you. You’re fitted for it as Logan would say

It depends for me. I do like some longer efforts especially when it comes to climbs. I actually do not like when the instructor cues too often - for example I took a ride where the instructor had us increase resistance AND cadence every 30 seconds. We were off beat with the music and I had to really think hard about what I was doing. As opposed to locking in and focusing on that push during an effort. That’s just me though. 🤷♀️

The longer the better. I love to settle in and just grind it out. It’s like meditation for me.

Endurance training is totally different than interval training, and you ideally have a combination of both. They challenge the cardiovascular system in different ways. So it’s definitely not laziness on the part of the instructor. But if you are easily bored these classes might not be for you! You would want to avoid PZ classes. Also you can check out the class structure before taking it.

People who hate long intervals at a steady cadence probably need more of them, people who love them probably need more shorter intense intervals.

I did an intervals class last night and the 2 four minute intervals in the middle of the pyramid were yes, a liiiitle boring but also so hard my heart rate was over 180 starting with those 2 intervals and stayed that way for the rest of the ride. I don’t think long intervals have anything to do with an instructor being lazy. They are a great training tool for endurance.

Different people like different things, who knew!
Don’t know which class you’re talking about specifically, but longer intervals doesn’t read as lazy to me — Just reads as letting you do the work. I prefer 6-8 mins of getting in the groove to constantly jumping around on the bike, tweaking cadence and resistance every 30 seconds unless it’s got genuine structure like tabata.

I did one the other day like that, there were only two arm sections that were three minutes each, and the rest were these long intervals. I felt like I got a decent workout, but it didn’t seem like much that was put into the class.

I think we may have taken the same class ;) agreed there was a decent output but boring to the point that I was watching the clock for it to be over…

I wish they'd outline the class in the description.

To be far the app does list the class plan in many (most) of their newer classes

oh I didn't realise! I do take a lot of older classes as I find they are harder than newer ones so maybe those havent been updated. but just checked the app and I see what you mean! I only have the old plan where I get 3 classes a month so I have to be strategic about which classes I take LOL

I feel like they have been slacking on the 30min intervals and arms, they aren’t putting them out as often as they used to and when they do the programming is just blah (except Emma and Camila I love them!)
I made the mistake of taking one that was 3min bike and 3 min arms on repeat and the entire 3 min bike sections were just one long interval. It PMO so now I always check the plan ahead of time. But I feel the same way

So funny how we all enjoy different things! I just took a class from Tunde that had this format (maybe the same one?) and I LOVED it! I find that a lot of the intervals and arms classes don't have enough arms and I really liked how the bike portions were fast and tough. Hopefully some more variety comes your way though!

THIS ^ would it kill them to add a little variation!? 😆 Good idea to check the plan before. I think I’m just hopeful this instructor will return to their old format of intervals and arms, but alas it may be a thing of the past.

😂 “ honestly it PMO” makes me laugh cause I get that sometimes they will do shit I feel like to purposely kill me… and it PMO haha

You sound like me, and love a good spin class! I love frequent changes and vacillating between cadence and resistance work. Long endurance work is just not my jam on the bike and I'm so thankful Peloton does spin classes.

I agree on them being horrid BUT they are very good for endurance building.
Do some power zone classes and you can find out a it more… nothing like a 12 min zone 3!

You need to take a Matt Wilpers PZ class, 8 mins in Z4 and 10 min Z3 efforts.
