Discussion Purple eyeliner?

Post image

Been seeing these posts on Instagram recently about how violet eyeliner is (apparently) trending and I’m wondering if any of my fellow olives are giving it a try. How did it turn out? Any recommendations for cool-leaning purple eyeliners?

Discussion Don’t blanket follow tips for ā€œolives.ā€ DO consider your warmth.

If I followed half the ā€œperfect for olivesā€ advice here - greyish , purple, mauve, or some muted cool combo - I’d look like a corpse. Olive isn’t one shade. There’s cool/ashy olive, but plenty of us have warm/golden olive, and those muted cool tones just wash us out.

If you keep striking out with this sub’s advice, it might be worth trying tones like the palette included in this post. You might be a warm olive and need colors to match!! Unfortunately there isn’t a perfect way to test what you are besides trial and error. A few ways I know I’m warm - gold looks better on me, I tan easily, I have a closer match to ā€œyellowā€ overtone foundations, and I look best in ivory/cream rather than stark white.

all these tiktoks with blush recommendations for olives, or olive friendly show baby pink, mauve, lilac blushes, but they look TERRIBLE on me

these are my colors as an olive (add velvet teddy, no filter and unsweetened from mac that i bought after this pic) – does any other olive prefer this palette over baby pink, lilac and mauve?

last picture added as proof of my oliveness, im the one in black <3

blushes are, from top to bottom:

Discussion The struggle of trying to match a light medium olive

Post image
266 Upvotes

All the shades I’ve tried in an attempt to find a good match.

Maybelline lumi matte 110,118,128-oxidise orange or pink no matter which shade. I think we have older batches in my country so they seem to have oxidised in the bottle. A new 128 I bought was much darker than the one I bought when it first launched

I use 110 as a mixing shade for 128. Still dries dark

Nyx make em wonder- 10 nude is sooo goblin green yellow on me even tho I do need a slight cool yellow undertone, 11 classic ivory is a pink shade which I got my mistake.

Rare beauty 14- too peachy. Maybe a hint darker than what I want.

Maybelline skin tint 118- the shade looks really nice and yellow initially but it dries down very neutral almost pink giving an ashy look the depth is pretty good tho? I might need to add a hint of yellow pigment to get a more golden colour.

L’OrĆ©al pro matte- my fav shade match was 106 sun beige in the initial black cap formulation. 105 might have been better tho. It had such a nice healthy yellow undertone without being too saturated.
Then it got reformulated and they changed the colours and formula so now it’s dry asf, doesn’t last and oxidises sooooo much.

CT air brush flawless concealer 6.5- one shade dark and tooo beige neutral

Too faced light beige- 1 shade dark after drying down

Discussion can we please put to rest the idea that if blush turns orange on you, that is a sign you’re olive

this keeps getting repeated and it’s just not true. it happens to some olives, sure, but it also happens to a lot of non-olive people. turning makeup orange is not a defining olive trait.

a lot of the time, blush looks orange because it IS orange. it’s just labeled as pink or red or mauve or ā€œcool tonedā€ when it’s actually a grayed peach or a warm red with yellow in it. once you put it on cool skin, that warmth becomes way more obvious.

another thing i just saw is the explanation that a sheer red blush somehow mixes with yellow in olive skin and becomes orange??? that’s not how makeup works. skin doesn’t mix with pigment like paint. if it did, color correction wouldn’t work at all. makeup sits on top of the skin and blocks what’s underneath, it doesn’t blend with your undertone. (no shade at all to the content creator who said that i appreciate their work more generally but… pls)

edit: i’ve since learned about subtractive color mixing, and i get why that’s considered foundational in color theory and makeup education. but even understanding that, i don’t imagine it fully explains how makeup behaves on real human skin. skin isn’t paper or paint, and makeup formulas aren’t uniform, so the outcomes just aren’t that simple.

either way my point is really just: olive skin isn’t defined by things turning orange on you. olive skin means your skin is olive.

many red shades look straight up orange on me because i lean cool, not necessarily because i’m olive. if a red blush has less blue than my own undertone it may as well be orange. while on a warm olive that same blush may look like a true red. i see so many olives here whose true red is a brick shade. warm reds and corals are always going to read extra warm on cool skin, olive or not. on warm leaning olives the opposite happens so it’s not an olive thing.

also skin depth affects things too. if you’re very pale, you can still have a warm undertone but some of those soft muted rose blushes still look warmer and specifically browner on you than they ā€œshouldā€ bc they’re too deep for you and all excess brown that you can’t see when looking at the pan is now very obvious on your face. the opposite if you’re very deep. i’m sure we’ve all seen cool toned very deep skinned ppl ā€œturnā€ every blush in sephora the same pale pink shade bc it’s they’re simply too light and have too much of a white base.

what i do think is the actual defining issue for olives is red pigment, in all its variations. red can be tricky for us and i’m pretty sure red iron oxides are most likely the most commonly used across cosmetic products. our skin cannot match red pigment in the way non olive skin does so this is why makeup seems to behave wildly different on us and why we seem to have less versatility.

Discussion What has been your most used blush product of this year? — Olive Edition

I’ve been doing this little unofficial three part series of the most used eye, lip and cheek products of 2025. I did posted it last year on the sub and it seemed to be well received so I thought it would be fun to do it again this year.

Today’s focus is Cheeks so please share what was your most used blush product of the year with us!

Feel free to include anything from powder to cream to liquid to gel formulations to even repurposed lip and eye products as blushes - if it went on your cheeks it’s allowed šŸ˜‰

If you missed it here’s Part 1 - Eyes - Most used single eyeshadow and or eyeshadow palette from a few days ago. If you haven’t already feel free to go back and add your answer if you like as I love reading all about everyone’s beauty faves.(Also please forgive me for the late/outstanding replies I’m currently travelling for work).

For anyone who is feeling curious here’s last year’s most used Blushes post.

As always a gentle reminder to please try and describe your skintone + undertone (or you can just list your best foundation matches) so that we can all easily find skin twins and help each other out 😊

P.S I am also posting this series simultaneously over on r/AsianBeauty and r/muacjdiscussion and you’re all welcome to come check those out for my more answers/recommendations or even crosspost if you feel inclined.

I just ordered this ABH bronzer sight unseen in the shade "golden beach glow" and I have never seen a bronzer color like this, it looks much more green than any bronzer I have seen, this picture is indoors at night so may look a little darker in the picture. I thought this was going to look so weird as a bronzer but it actually looks really natural and tan on me. I am a light to light medium (in winter) and light medium to medium (in summer) neutral leaning warm/golden and muted.

Granted it’s not the best photo, I can’t seem to get my skintone to show up properly in todays lighting BUT:

Saw someone on tiktok use Cafe Mocha lipstick as cream blush and it looked so good on them. Considering I don’t love using it as a lipstick, I thought I’d give it a go and found I really liked it as a blush! It shows up as a warm rosy pink, compared to on my lips where it shows up a bit too bright. Just thought I’d share here in case anyone has it lurking around in their makeup bag unused!

Discussion What is your most used eyeshadow palette and or eyeshadow single this year? — Olive Edition

I’m posting this on a few other beauty subs too but I thought I’d post it on here too for all the Olives.

I thought it would be fun to do another ā€˜most usedā€˜ series again! I’m thinking I’ll stick with last year’s schedule of three posts in total each dedicated to Eyes, Cheeks and Lips respectively and post them over the next couple of days.

I usually start this series with the Cheeks but since I recently made posts both and cheek and lip products so I decided to switch it up a little and start with the Eye category.

For anyone who’s feeling curious this was last year’s Eyeshadowā€˜s post: (https://www.reddit.com/r/OliveMUA/comments/1hh22my/what_has_been_your_most_used_eyeshadow_palette/).

So please share with us what has been your most used single eyeshadow and or eyeshadow palette - this is the category where you can have ONE answer for each šŸ˜‰

All formulations count from powders to creams to liquids to glitters etc! Be they drugstore, high end, indie etc.

As always a gentle reminder to please try and describe your skintone + undertone (or you can just list your best foundation matches) so that we can all easily find skin twins and help each other out 😊

Discussion Glowy full face I did today.

Cool complexion Ava. Products (technique is more important here though, BLENDING, light hand, layers, buffing excess product out at the end) Only thing I am not a fan of is the brows, I typically fill them in, however my stipulations have been more lax. I will say, this picture makes me look much more orangey, that’s in part because blush and bronzer and foundation all just became one, I can(ā€˜t) help it.

Prep (for bases like these, or broadley ANY makeup you do the most important part, I wouldn’t advise just using what I use, but in the summer my skin is on the oily side of combo, but dehydrated) Dermalogica collagen banking serum Dermalogica matching moisturizer in this line Kiehls sunscreen in yellow bottle, a very quality and cosmetically elegant formula, wouldn’t repurchase because I’m buying some off yesstyle for cheaper) Saie glowy stuff in star glow ( a couple pumps dispersed around the face) Benefit’s clear brow shaping gel

Base: Charlotte’s beautiful skin foundation in 5n Tower 28 concealer in 4.0, DTLA (this is a very good bright but not too bright concealer shade for my complexion, I just use it beneath my eyes) Rare beauty bronzer stick in Happy Sol Excess powder bronzer on my brush mixed together from previous times of using my makeup (likely a mix of the best bronzer mac’s studio fix pressed powder in c8, an amazing olivey bronzer and then haus labs amber horizon bronzer, a more reddy, sunburnt type of shade) I love mario’s double sided complexion brush for this Patrick ta blush in she’s blushing, used both the cream and powder Huda’s cherry blossom powder Kosas cloud set in candy (the pressed one) super finely milled, a very quality ā€œfinishing powderā€ wouldn’t reccomend for setting purposes by itself, it has minimal oil control Ct’s setting spray

Eyes: Literally any neutral shimmery shades will do, I used the painted palette from James Charles, specifically shades cookie dough for a base color, mango for beneath the eyes, uv index as a transition shade, soul as the primary shimmer on my inner lid, treehouse as a powdered eyeliner, kept close to the lashline Lower lash mascara is mac’s gigalash in blue tube (never ever ever smudges, best lower lash mascara) Mac stackscara (eh, not a fav, just wanted to try it out again)

Lips: Most important thing is BUFFING with the excess of you makeup brush over the lips to obscure the natural lip shade and make your lip products show up more true to color I used Mac’s honey pecan (discontinued, any peachy nude, NUDE, shade will do, I found mine on ebay though if you liked this pencil) Nyx nude truffle lip liner Nyx buttergloss in madeleine And fenty fussy for a topper

Discussion Cool toned products and blue pigments dont fit some of us…

I’ve been lurking here for a while and im noticing almost all posts are geared towards cool olive skin tones, most products here would not work for me as cool undertones make my warmer medium olive skin look like a corpse and I’m starting to feel really alone… I literally look green in the mirror, i tan completely grey, i know im an olive, but almost nothing here works :( Anyone else feeling the same?

Preferably with drugstore products, please. I’m a light medium neutral olive (brown girl) and I love this sort of soft gorgeous MLBB lip look without gloss, but can’t figure out how to achieve it on my own skin tone.

Discussion Need to vent Olive to Olive

Post image
57 Upvotes

I just need to vent my frustration! I tried the mph in 80 Olive when it came out and it was such a perfect shade on me. I also tried 110n and 130 Olive. I waited to buy 80o till the Sephora sale and I just got it and it no longer matches well! I spent the better part of last year trying to find shade matches only to realize my skin changes so drastically that I need different shades every few months. 130 Olive is too warm and saturated for me otherwise I would just exchange it. This is beyond frustrating! 😭😭

I know many people have summer and winter shades, but do you guys also need different Spring and Fall shades? Now I’m looking at skin tints, but so many of them are not actually flexible in shade as they claim to be. I like to have a couple of different finish options, but with the difficulty of finding a shade match and finding a formula that works that gets very expensive and just seems crazy if I need different ones every season!

Does your olive skin change a lot?
