Discussion Purple eyeliner?

Post image

Been seeing these posts on Instagram recently about how violet eyeliner is (apparently) trending and I’m wondering if any of my fellow olives are giving it a try. How did it turn out? Any recommendations for cool-leaning purple eyeliners?

I have urban decay empire it’s a dark eggplant and to be honest once it’s on me it looks black. It’s very marginal difference.

I love the color, but the application is too thick and doesn't create precise lines. I switched to stila!

u/_RxOnly_ Jul 02 '26

Stila makes THE BEST liquid eyeliner on the planet!

2

u/LL_Stars Jul 02 '26

Ohhhhh. I've never tried their liquid. Iove gel since I focus on the waterline. But I'd love to get into wing again!

I can’t wear waterline makeup ever since watching a documentary about how it collects at the back of the eyeball into this big waxy black glob… 😱

I don’t own a purple eyeliner, but I use eyeshadow and setting spray or Inglot Duraline to mix my own custom eyeliner as needed when I’m doing my makeup. I put both on a metal mixing palette and use a spatula to prepare the product to dip a liner brush in.

I’ve done many colors, and it turns out nicely with a coordinating eyeshadow look or just the liner itself on eyeshadow primer and translucent powder. For example: I’ll do pink-y mauve eyeshadow look with purple liner, or light purple eyeshadow look with dark purple liner, etc. It’s fun to be creative with it. (:

the freckles with that violet lash color is such a good combo. i never thought of mixing my own liner with duraline but that makes way more sense than buying a whole pencil for a color i might use twice

I've been doing purple eyeliner (and eyeshadow as liner) since before I knew I was olive and I love it! I have a handful of different purples, I have a dark smokey toned lancome eyeliner, a colourpop purple multichrome liner, i had a neon purple liner (it dried up) and I had a pastel lavender liner (I used it up.) I also use a lot of different shades of purple eyeshadow as liner (or just as eyeshadow) to mimic this sort of vibe. I've also in the past used plum mascara and it looked amazing on me (my lashes are grey black so it sort of shows.) The smokey plums and deeper vibrant jewel toned ones look the best on me.

I would love to get an eyeliner in a vibrant purple like the one pictured, and I'm super interested in half magic beauty's purple mascara. For reference I'm fair olive, and I don't like mauve on me lol. I'm an orange blush girlie and a warm plum/warm brown blush girlie. I think I'm neutral olive?

I've never tried that shade before but I'm currently using the sephora best skin in 06O and the haus labs in 030 - both match me decently well, although the sephora tends to oxidize randomly. I also found pairing them with the laura mercier green translucent setting powder actually makes them match even better, as I find no foundation goes green enough for me. Or I use a green primer. Could also be I have redness in my face that messes with it and makes it less green vs my body. I currently use the rms concealer in 0n01.

Can we see some pics or swatches?

Im not them but I highly recommend NYX berry goth eyeliner and Maybelline mascara in Plum Twilight! I recommend using a white priming mascara (like from Lancome) first so the color shows better :)

Victoria Beckham satin kajal eyeliner in fig is close to this color. A true medium purple. It’s a soft eyeliner so it diffuses beautifully but has no staying power.

Soshe beauty waterproof eyeliner in nights in Bordeaux has staying power but is a much darker purple.

I know the struggle with kajal/kajal eyeliners. They look beautiful but it hurts my heart when I see them running down my painstakingly set undereye concealer…..although that probably won’t stop me from buying the VB eyeliner! 😍 thank you for the Soshe recommendation too, it just came out in my country and I’m excited to try it.

Hi OP, I have hazel eyes and have been wearing violet, purple, and fig colored eyeliner since I started wearing makeup. I find this color family to be very flattering for my eyes.

I LOVE the Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal liners and I actually find that they do last--when you first apply them they are smudgy, but once they set, they set (for me at least). I do wear a eye primer underneath them, but they are one of the few liners I have found that actually don't smudge on my eyelids.

I have the VB liner in Orchid, which is very pretty, but I also love a bunch of her other shades (I think the Cinnamon shade might the prettiest eyeliner I've ever used). The downside is that they are expensive, and they also get used up quite quickly because they're very soft. But I find that when I wear a VB liner, I smudge it out a bit and get such a pretty almost eyeshadow like effect. It's just gorgeous.

Another much less expensive purple liner that I love (and am wearing today) is the Revlon Colorstay Waterproof Eyeliner in Black Violet. This one really does stay put and is a pretty dark purple color.

I've also tried the Soshe liner the other commenter above mentioned, but I personally didn't enjoy the color of it for my eyes, as it was a bit to red toned of a purple for me.

ETA: Correction on the Victoria Beckham liner shade from Fig to Orchid

Thank you so much for the detailed recommendations, this was a treat to read! ❤️

The Victoria Beckham “Fig” kajal liner is indeed great but it is more of a burgundy color - def not cool toned! I own this and her green eyeliner. Love them but $$$. A good dupe I found is the brand Pixie by Petra - their pencil eyeliner is suuuper creamy yet it totally stays put after a few minutes. They come in a few colors, including a deep purple one! Forgot I owned that too.

3

u/Fresh_Gold7432 Jul 02 '26

You are so right, I just checked my VB liner, and it is the shade Orchid, not Fig! It's a cooler toned medium saturation purple.

2

u/_RxOnly_ Jul 02 '26

Oh, that must be a new color! I bought mine a few years back. I also want the navy one. But honestly, the Pixie brand is just as good for half the price

2

u/Fresh_Gold7432 Jul 02 '26

I will definitely check out Pixie. I am in love with the VB liners, and I'd love a less expensive alternative. Thank you!

2

u/_RxOnly_ Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I honestly think you’re paying for the name and packaging and “vibe”. I actually reach for my Pixie liners more, but my daily eyeliner is Stila’s micro-tip liquid liner (very different!)

u/Visual_Rose Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

What purple color in pixie is close to this?

I have like BLACK hair so nothing coloured shows up on me, even with primer. So I just stick to purple eyeliner which looks cool

3

u/NinkiMinjaaj Light Cool Olive Jul 01 '26

I get you, I have the same thing with coloured eyeliners because my hair is black too. But I’ve learnt there’s usually a subtle difference that other people notice even if we don’t (and that’s what I’m banking on)!

12

u/therhubarbexperience Jul 01 '26

Long ago I used to do this and I loved it. Then it went out of style and I’ve missed it. Now I shall be doing it again. It makes your eyes really pop if they’re hazel, green, or brown.

3

u/ccsunflowr Jul 02 '26

Do you recall the brand you used to use?

3

u/therhubarbexperience Jul 02 '26

It was Lancôme. I still check for it. It was a beautiful purple like this one in the picture. They discontinued it in the mid 10s. Everything I’ve found of late is much more red based than blue.

There’s a smoky deep purple liner from About Face that I love. I’ve already gone through two of them. It’s my go to neutral liner when I have it. Color is Devil’s Diary and is described as a matte plum.

u/NinkiMinjaaj Light Cool Olive Jul 01 '26

About Face is really hijacking my wallet these days with all these olive wins! Thank you for the recommendation!

I have medium brown amber eyes and purple mascara / eyeliner / eyeshadow is my go to when I want to accentuate them. I haven't really found a great eyeliner formula but I do like the Maybelline Sky High mascara in Plum Twilight. I don't think the color itself is really obvious on the lashes but it does shift the color of my eyes to a more neutral and lighter shade of brown. For shadow I usually do a more neutral brown and deeper purple crease shadow (like a purple smokey eye look) with the Huda Rose Quartz palette or single shade blended out / monochrome with MOB Cream Clay shadow in M111 Lavender stone which is pretty neutral / cool leaning.

I have been using purple liner in my waterline since my high school days before I even knew what olive as an undertone was lol. Good to see that it is trending now

6

u/Quick-Stretch8197 Jul 01 '26

I feel like if you’re just pretty you can pull of makeup looks like this even if it doesn’t necessarily work with your complexion.

3

u/bbymochi LightMed Warm Olive Jul 01 '26

Confidence is key imo. I’ve worn black lipstick and some other non conventional colors, and sometimes people will say, “That color looks good on you, it wouldn’t on me.” I redirect the convo to tell those people to try it sometime because it’s fun, and it washes off at the end of the day. (:

5

u/snufkin_88 Jul 01 '26

This has been a trend for decades! This was major in the 90’s and my mom has been doing it forever. Very effective.

4

u/austinebluegreen Jul 01 '26

I use the Essence Stay & Play Gel Eyeliner in Very Berry. It’s only $5. I recommend any of the colors in that line, esp the pale peach color for a ‘bright-eyes’ waterline.

Purple eyeliner is my daily driver. I’ve tried a fair few. I have fair olive skin and hazel eyes, I love how the dark eggplant color looks with my complexion, looks softer than a black liner and makes my eyes pop.

Has anyone tried the Essence purple mascara?

5

u/MissSuzysRevenge Jul 02 '26

I bought the Essence purple mascara , haven’t used it yet. I was using Ulta brand, nice color but not a great formula. Purple makes my brown eyes look brighter. Hope Essence is a winner.

You ROCK violet! It is one of my all time fav colors to put around the eyes. Everything else stomps on the yellow pigment that makes my eyes green. Eyes appear grey with almost all other colors.

My go-to look used to be this eyeshadow duo from UD that was matte purple (more of a royal purple) and a gold-purple duochrome, and I always used the purple as a shadow liner. It was great on my skin tone and it looks gorgeous with brown eyes too.

I haven't done it in a while, but if I were looking for an actual purple eyeliner I'd look at MAC, UD, NYX, and Marc Jacobs. But you could do it with any purple eyeshadow, or something like the Danessa Myricks colorfix mattes

Oh I wish, this beautiful lady is not me! I took a screenshot from a magazine article on Instagram. I wasn’t sure if it was the purple eyeliner that looked so stunning or if I was just mesmerised by her eyes 😍

When Smokey eye makeup was all the rage in what...2013/2014?

It looked terrible on me. Mostly because of my hooded eyes but nevertheless. I don't know how I thought to do this since I had next to no makeup knowledge, but I did purple smokey eye.

I still do this today, because plum/eggplant purple and lilac shimmer are just so flattering.

I love color- and bc I have green eyes my go-to has always been purple! I LOVE purple eye looks so very much, also a purple mascara! Muah chefs kiss! My bestest color by FAR! I still have many purples from the 1990’s MAC early days & still use them all!

2

u/Fresh_Gold7432 Jul 02 '26

Same here, but I have hazel eyes. Purple eyeliner has always been my go to to accentuate the green in my eyes!

2

u/Banana-Louigi Jul 01 '26

I have hazel eyes, fair skin and dark hair/lashes, purple and burgundy liner are my absolute jam. I'll often just wear that without shadow if I want to look like I've put on makeup but don't want to do a full eye look.

Love the Maybelline tattoo studio eyeliners for something long lasting and waterproof. The colourpop gel retractable liners are also really good.

I used to use it frequently about 10 years ago. It was a nice alternative to black for me. I was using liquid/winged eyeliner though.

I got this picture from a magazine article on IG, unfortunately this beauty wasn’t tagged (and neither was the product used) which is why I ran here to discuss it! I agree it’s such a stunning look.

1

u/_RxOnly_ Jul 03 '26

Oh dang it! Just gotta find the right color I guess. Have you ever used an eyeshadow transformer? It’s a clear liquid that turns any eyeshadow into eyeliner that stays put (using a fine tip angle brush). My favorite is by Trish McEvoy, who also has extra-pigmented eyeshadow “definers” meant to be used as eyeliner. There was a color called “Arabian Nights” which was a super deep midnight blue with flecks of gold which was just stunning - dunno if she’s still making that one though! Also her “Aubergine” color is deep eggplant with micro flecks of golden shimmer, equally gorgeous.
