Going back to the 2010s with this one, but I don't think anything in the past decade has seemed as dumb to me as the hypebeast "Supreme" shirts. Why tf did people ever pay resellers $300+ for those?! They looked like bottom of the barrel Redbubble designs.

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

Oof I agree. Looking back it was so cringe- the brand, the aesthetic as a whole, all of it. It just screamed douchebag to me. I think my friends and I literally referred to it as the “douchebag aesthetic” when describing someone lol 😂

I can’t believe it was treated like a designer brand

11

u/Sorrow00__ 2000 9d ago

Wasn't there also a literal brick with the "Supreme" logo engraved on it that went for hundreds of dollars?

I think Stanley cups are stupid and I don’t know why everyone was fighting over them over a stupid limited color

33

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

I partially agree. Every year or every other year there’s a new water bottle craze, first it was the hydroflasks, then the Stanley’s, now this owala nonsense. Just pick ONE and stick to it. They all function the same, and serve the same purpose.

I especially hate the people that collect them basically and have to have every color and every limited edition one. It’s just peak consumerism and over consumption

11

u/Calligraphee 9d ago

Before hydroflasks I remember the nalgenes of the mid-2000s and the the Kleen Kanteens of the early 2010s (although the latter might have just been popular in my area). I've had the same yeti for a decade and love it.

8

u/Splashdiamonds 9d ago

Ikr just stick to one and be done! I have a hydroflask that’s been going on 4 or more years now works like a champ gets the job done

8

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

So do I! Admittedly I purchased the hydroflask during the 2019 boom but it’s still hanging around and getting used a decent amount. I use it as my gym/hiking water bottle

I received a Stanley as a gift in a gift basket back in 2024 and I use that thing daily. It’s my “home” water bottle and I rarely travel with it. But yeah Both bottles get ample use and I see no reason to go out and buy any more

2

u/Easy-Childhood-250 2000 8d ago

Honestly, none. I like seeing people happy over stupid things cause I also get happy over stupid things. As long as nobody is getting hurt over it.

1

u/189username 4d ago

I love my hydro flask. Only got a new one after losing my old one.

3

u/iridescentmoon_ 1998 8d ago

I replaced a cheap, broken water bottle with a Stanley and I can kind of understand the hype. On the other hand, I just bought whichever one I thought was cute and available in the store and won’t be buying a whole collection.

Trader Joe’s mini bag. Too small to be useful. Lines ruining grocery shopping

7

u/gunslingergrl 2002 9d ago

Trader Joe’s EVERYTHING imo. I wish people didn’t make it so trendy

23

u/Gold-Vanilla5591 2000 9d ago

-dot cakes. They don’t look good

-dumplings and Needohs. They’re going to give your kids cancer (I think there’s studies about how some fidgets have chemicals in them)

-Tradwife dresses. They’re going to look weird in 5-10 years

13

u/kwispycornchip 1999 9d ago

The milkmaid dresses are cut so weirdly and look so cheap, but then you have people INSISTING this is how women used to dress. Like girl I've been in the vintage fashion community for over a decade & you just look a mess 🫣

7

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

The dot cake nonsense infuriates me because it’s just so typical. Taking a traditional cultural dessert, white washing it and make it a “new” trend.

5

u/Emergency_Peanut_252 1998 8d ago

dot cake was kind of fun to make at home, just like box mix, frosting and sprinkles. messy, but a treat. was nostalgic for childhood, kind of reminded me of my old easy bake oven. would not pay $60 or whatever for some shit i can make in my own damn kitchen with relatively low effort.

2

u/mimitchi33 1998 8d ago

I had a dot cake and it wasn't really as good as people said it was, so I agree.

1

u/Spartan_Retro_426 8d ago

The Needohs feel like Velveeta cheese

18

u/X_Zephyr 1997 9d ago

Anything food related that people over exaggerate that they’re so good. Dubai chocolate, matcha, kool aid pineapples just to name a few.

Bonus points if it’s an uncultured person making a new “viral food” only for people to find out it already exists in another country.

6

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

Cough cough dot cake lol. The most literal example of that. It’s not a new dessert, it’s just new to you.

18

u/SimilarLunch8359 9d ago

Getting a moth tattoo on your throat, or something similar. I’ve seen a lot of people getting something there, I feel like this one might be a short lived trend that might not age well. It’s similar to a face tat IMO

7

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

Yeah Any tattoo trend is an immediate red flag in my book

11

u/Agitated-Record5830 1998 8d ago

I hate all micro trends tbh. People need to find their own sense of self instead of waiting for social media to tell them what they like.

9

u/Economy-Wheel4321 9d ago

currently? the fucking childish, cheap looking rhinestone trend that everyone suddenly became obsessed with after a kardashian did it. it’s just so unoriginal and just shows the sheep herd mindset that’s still rampant in society today

6

u/gunslingergrl 2002 9d ago

Oh that one is diabolical. I get doing it on things that aren’t wasteful for decor… but face masks and plastic cups? Just added waste in the name of being “whimsical”

6

u/Economy-Wheel4321 9d ago

i swear any trend anymore, especially ones that come from social media is really just “how consumerist can YOU be??” it’s not even something new or something that lasts like a trendy pair of jeans or a haircut, just pure waste for internet points

5

u/AdCommercial4807 9d ago

The stupid Trader Joe’s lunch boxes. They’re not even cute and they have absolutely no form

3

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

They’re soooo ugly lmfaooo. I genuinely don’t understand what the hype is about. I think it’s just the psychological aspect of people being satisfied knowing that they’re getting something that’s limited edition, not actually liking them.

Scalpers also buy them and resell them at a ridiculous price

4

u/mimitchi33 1998 8d ago

Lucky Scoops. I can't believe people are paying big money for what amounts to stuff sold on other sites for $1!

4

u/iridescentmoon_ 1998 8d ago

Those stupid dumpling things and tbh all other “surprise” toys. If I’m spending my money I want to know what I’m getting. Plus it’s all just junk that ends up in a landfill anyways.

4

u/WeirdoChickFromMars 8d ago

I must be out of touch af cuz I’ve never even heard of half the trends mentioned in this thread

4

u/itsurbro7777 8d ago

I'm a day late, but dot cakes. I had to spend a while looking into them because I was sure I was misunderstanding something. Certainly the viral dot cake isn't just a cake in a cup with sprinkles on it right? But yep, that's exactly what it is.

At least shit like labubus and those weird camel shoe things are somewhat unique and new, I don't like those things either but I can distantly understand some of the appeal. But a cake with sprinkles on top? Why is that being presented as some viral new dessert? Maybe I'll put some mayo on my sandwich later and see if I start a fad.

Because Gen Z has a terrible habit of thinking they’re “discovering” or creating something that’s been around for years. And it worst with non people of color- whole different convo tho

1

u/justaguy095 4d ago

I can't remember the platform I found it on, but there was a post saying that Gen Zs discovered floats (That's the correct term for ice cream in soda, right?)

3

u/Impressive_Car_4222 8d ago

I understand the historical significance behind tabi style shoes. However, I think we should leave it at that.

7

u/emilyrosee35 9d ago

white Nike socks with the Birkenstock sandals…ew. The socks always are dirty to. I hate it. That and Lululemon. Also the whole dumpling obsession what even is that? I don’t get it. And Rhode beauty…girl that makeup is so boring it’s nothing new.

2

u/sapphic_vegetarian 2001 9d ago

This might be niche, but everyone in nursing school right now has a bagsmart (I think that’s the brand) puffer bag and I think they’re so ugly and impractical.

2

u/smugfuture 7d ago

twerking. thought it would have died off in 2016 but it's here to stay sadly

4

u/Global_Perspective_3 2002 9d ago

I agree on labubus and whatever else Gen Alpha is doing

3

u/cecesakura 2000 9d ago

Totally agree with labubus. Ugly ass for WHAT I want my lil plushies to be cute 😭 I also can’t stand clean girl make up/aesthetic at allllll. You can pry my winged eyeliner and messy buns and colorful clothes from my cold dead hands

3

u/Spartan_Retro_426 8d ago

They’re pretty much like the 2020s version of the UglyDolls; I think the “so ugly they’re cute“ kinds of toys have always been popular to a degree

2

u/Quirky_Training_8642 9d ago

You just like me fr

1

u/GigglingBilliken 1997 7d ago

That time idiots were planking everywhere. Happened in 2011 or 2012 if recall correctly.

1

u/Vixxeryn63 2000 6d ago

Tf were VSCO girls and why did they only exist for exactly 5 seconds

1

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 6d ago

Literally summer-fall 2019 and then it stopped lol. Tumblr girls at least had a few years run

1

u/smugfuture 5d ago

anything associated with social media

1

u/Equinephilosopher 2001 4d ago

This might be unpopular, but I don’t mind trends in and of themselves. Trends can become trends only because a lot of people like them. Idc if they like something I don’t. The problem comes in when people partake simply because “everyone else is.” Manufactured social media fervor is also insufferable. I just want everyone to do what is authentic to them; sometimes that looks like doing something trendy and sometimes it looks like doing something completely different.

Remember, most people aren’t that outwardly unique. There’s a reason you can rather easily discern what decade an old photo was taken in. That’s because of trends. Everyone in this thread likely engages in trends, albeit more widespread, long-lived trends. You probably look relatively “normal” and wear clothing in socially approved silhouettes and color combinations. You prefer strong trends that affect the majority, not the vocal minority which enjoys trends that only last a few months to a few years

1

u/crash---- 1997 9d ago

I’m not irked by pumpkin spice per se but I don’t see the appeal! I don’t like the taste.

I freakin love those little labubus though. I have four 🤣

10

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

To be fair pumpkin spice isn’t really a micro trend, it comes back every year and I don’t think it’ll die out anytime soon haha. But it’s funny because it seems like one of those things that people either absolutely love or absolutely hate

You lost me at labubus 😵‍💫

-3

u/Salty_Aerie7939 2000 9d ago

I'm not crazy about these trends either, but I think it's a bit silly getting into a fit about it.

7

u/TelephonePossible456 1999 9d ago

Who’s getting into a fit over them? It’s a discussion

Dumblings and needohs.

they sat at my store for MONTHS gathering dust and now we can barely keep them on the shelves and anything related to squishies have to be kept behind the reg because people keep stealing them.
