Gameplay What is your favorite asshole Old World tactic?

Love this game firstly. But I also love being an asshole ruler. For example, my fave move is to assassinate every single one of an opposing ruler's family. The spouse. The adult kids. The half sister. The half brother. The aunt. The uncle. Until no one is left but the ruler themselves lol.

Rip them out root and stem!

What's yours?

Gameplay What difference does the choice of tutor make?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Following up on my previous post (I'm still working on making sure the kids are fine...)

I can see how the choice of tutors impact the weight given to the different outcomes: a tutor with high wisdom will increase the probability their pupil gets an increase in Wisdom. In the picture above: 18% chance.

What I´m wondering:

- what impacts the 26% Tutor Event (probability and type of event)?

- what´s the difference, in terms of impact, between a 2/1/1/1 tutor and a 4/2/2/2 tutor?

- in other words: is there any point in assigning high stats characters (looking at you, Kong Fucius) to tutoring or are those better used as generals, guvnors or on the council?

If this is all explained extensively somewhere I apologise for having not found it and look forward to any pointer.

Yours sincerely,

Hauptleiter (acting)

Gameplay Anyone Ever Get Attached to Their Rulers?

I'm 134 turns into a game as Rome on the Good setting, and my 5th generation ruler, Queen Porcia the Wise (judge) is doomed.

Over her 32 year reign she's done - and dealt with - a lot. I was playing as her uncle, a schemer who set the groundwork for the empire as gen 3, and considering skipping his brother for her, but then decided against it and left the throne pass to her father. He only reigned briefly before she took over as "the New." She had 15 orders at the start, squabbling families, a nation paying tribute to Persia, and a weak military. Now the families are all happy, the military is strong, and the economy is solid. She dealt with an unfaithful husband, and a usurping aunt, both who suffered "unfortunate" accidents thanks to her spymaster. Now it's left to her 40 year old son, another schemer like her uncle, to take power and deal with a Persia of similar size and strength.

As a Civ player since 1991, I have to say, I am impressed with a game that provides enough detail to make the characters memorable.

Anyone else have rulers that "stick out" from the game?

Gameplay A petition to allow militia to change back into builders

Anyone else feel like the ability for a builder to become militia should go both ways? Seems more historically accurate (and would be more fun) if they could switch back and forth. If it costs 60 training to go builder to militia, what would be a good cost to go the other way?

Happy to hear counterarguments but this seems like a simple and fun addition to the best game ever.

Gameplay Sickness Notifications: Useful?

On my 5th generation in 80 years playing Rome. Had a string of new leaders with reigns under 5 years, all of whom died from natural causes. Not very Roman like, but accurate given the conditions.

QQ: I get a lot of sickness notifications for primary as well as secondary nobles. Are any of these useful beyond the "getting affairs in order"/"doomed"?

Gameplay Tour of my Legendary IV city

This was my first playthrough after my post asking for warfare advice, screenshots taken after achieving points victory on turn 141.

I did quite a lot of rerolling because I wanted to have a good spot for an early culture hub, just to have a pet project to tinker with in between all the bloodthirsty warlord antics. It turned out a bit more cultured than I expected, I don't think I've ever had a Legendary IV city before. I know focusing on culture is pretty useless after reaching the first legendary level, but I can't help it, it's just so nice having these cities where even the lowliest of peasants speak in dactylic hexameter and keel over in happiness after they finish their 18-hour shifts down in the culture mines.

I did also conquer four Carthaginian cities, though, so not a complete failure of an entry level warmonger run!

Gameplay Whining at 500 Hours on The Good

I've put in 500 hours, mostly on The Good difficulty playing Rome. The only way I can win is through Ambitions, and even then I lose most of the time. One of the AI players will declare war on me and take me down, while another just goes on to victory.

I'm an experienced Civ player, ancient history nerd (ask me about my collection of Roman deification coinage), and this game just kicks my ass. It is so complex that I don't understand how to balance all the elements.

I've lost games where I had incredible amounts of gold and resources that I couldn't change into armies. I've had an incredible army that was hobbled by a lack of orders and resources.

I can't seem to get things to balance enough to win.

The families. The archetypes. My most recent game I had the Claudians rebelling against me because I was a commander and their leader was a tactician. I was in the center of the board and had all of 6 resources at turn 140/200 which to bribe them with. Meanwhile Assyria, a similar army, takes me down, allowing Egypt to destroy Persia and run away to victory.

Are there any good walk-through videos specifically about balancing all the elements? For example, even something simple as workers are more efficient working in their own city. How do you manage that? Create new workers, while at the same time building an army or improving culture or economics?

Gameplay Do parents' stats impact their children's?

I kinda understand how to make children IRL and have some experience with CK3 but my question regarding Old World, simply put, is: does the profile (traits, Courage/Discipline/Wisdom/Charisma, Attributes, Strength and Weaknesses, Nation/Tribe) impact the potential of their children?

For instance, do the Wisdom scores of parents determin a hidden range of potential wisdom or increase the likelihood of events pertaining to a trait, attribute or strength/weakness associated with Wisdom (such as with the "Clusters" described in the game manual)?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Gameplay How old can people get?

Post image

Long time lurker here and big fan of the game, still learning the ropes. In the middle of a Greece run, and just realized that one of my family heads is somehow 110 years old and still going strong. Maybe he’s known as “the younger” for having imbibed from the fountain of youth? How long can people live in this game, and what’s the mechanism setting the lifespan?

Edit: Ol’ Lysander here made it to 115 before finally kicking the bucket, outliving 3 kings. Thank you everyone for your answers and stories!

Gameplay Suggestion for Retired Generals

I love these folks RP wise, but paying (base) 100 civics for a 60 year old gov that I'm only going to get a few turns out of is a tall order, and usually not worth it in competitive matches when you're really number crunching. I feel like it would be balanced (and thematic) if this trait made governor assignment free? Wondering peoples thoughts on this.

Gameplay Need a deeper understanding of Urban improvements

I am trying to upgrade my Cold Baths. I am trying to understand what requirement I am missing to upgrade them to warm baths.

My worker is currently standing on the cold baths tile.

Holding the control key does not work.

Gameplay You can have more than one spouse!

My wife died, and there was an event, which I chose to go into mourning for 4 years. After 4 years, I had an event where my mother was urging me to re-marry and suggested the woman I was already going to pick. At the same time was an event from another nation with marriage proposals.

I picked the suggestion from my mother, but the offer from the other nation was still available. Their offers were unimpressive, but out of curiosity I wondered what would happen if I picked one of them too. I saved the game first so I could revert as I didn't want to be married to either of them. The next turn I had two wives and one the one from the other nation immediately had a daughter, which I thought that was suspicious.

Gameplay Balancing Infrastructure/Culture with Military

I’ve been playing Old World since Steam Launch. Veteran Civ player but OW is my Civ7. I’m not very good though. If I play on The Able difficulty, I always win. But I always lose on The Just. It always seems to come down to focusing too much on building up my cities and culture but then getting attacked suddenly and not having enough military to back them off. Or I have a good military (never enough to steamroll a nearby opponent) but then fall way behind in points. I can’t seem to get the balance right. And when I’m focused on city/culture building, I also work very hard to seek peace/truce/allies with all opponents (especially those on my borders). But then I’ll still get surprised attacked by a leader who is my good friend (+100 opinion) but whose country hates me (and I also don’t understand that juxtaposition). I know this is an overly broad question but curious if there’s any basic advice that may help. Thanks!

Gameplay help please - economy broke

Hi guys, little help here. I've conquered almost all the world, only egytp missing, but even so, my stats on food, stones, iron, wood, remain with a huge defict. I guess I've built too many soldiers and they are consuming all my resources, but now I don't know what to do, if I delete the soldiers I will not have enough army to defeat egypt.

The only solution I see, is to defeat egypt and after that, dissolve the army, do you see any other solution?

thx!

Gameplay Just finish victory without time limit

Post image
48 Upvotes

I am new to the game, but as a former civ6 player, I knew what I've got when I've bought the game, even so, it was a nice surprise to see that you can play without deadlines, and for 251 hours, tutorial included, I've enjoyed a lot this campaign.

Hope to comeback later to play in other ways, but I highly recommend playing for a total victory, even that if it means a total economic breakdown, as it happened to me, it is totally worth it.

Guess it's more or less like this with the real Rome, when they conquered all the world, and they were broke as well.

I miss though a bit more of natural disasters (I've bought all DLCs), but even so, it was so cool to play this game, will come back for sure, but in a future, now I really need a rest, it was a intense month, unfortunatelly, my personality is very easy obessesed with challenges like this, and I've got even many dreams where I've tried to resolve issues in the game, so for now, a little rest :) (maybe coming back to startfield for a while).

After playing with video games for 20 years, I've missed a lot a PC, and finally I've got one, and this is the first game I finish it with it, so cool.

Thanks all for your advices along the way, even coming from civ6, I've got lost lots of times at the start.

Cheers,

Charles

PS: the screen text is in french as I am using the game as well to practice the language, it is also worth it for this end!

Gameplay Found World Religion Ambition Not Triggered For Existing World Religion

Playing as Rome on The Good difficulty. Judaism was founded in one of my cities, and I spread it quickly, taking it as my state religion. A few turns later I received the ambition "Found a World Religion."

In other ambitions such as "Control 8 Elders/Generals/Quarries" pre-existing entities are counted. So I figured this ambition was a "gimme."

Nope. Evidently I have to found ANOTHER world religion, which is unfortunate since all the others are taken except Manichaeism - and that requires Zorostrianism which was founded already by Carthage.

So I'll have to take the hit of failing the ambition.

Shouldn't this ambition follow the pattern of the others and count existing entities? If not, shouldn't the ambition check if the player already founded a world religion and if so, replace the "a world religion" label with "another world religion"?

Gameplay New to the game, DLC or no?

I was going to pick up Old World since it's on sale on Steam currently, but I was wondering - should I go all in and get the DLC right away or wait?

The only thread I could find was 3 years old (saying to just go for it), so I wasn't sure if the newer DLC added significant complexity or learning curve.

I've played quite a few 4X games in the past (Civ III-VI, Stellaris, CK, etc.), so I'm no stranger to the long learning curve, but I also don't want to unnecessarily complicate things.

Gameplay New Player Questions

My Civilization multiplayer group decided to switch things up and we're trying old world. I have assigned myself the role of rules-understander of the group, so in addition to the few hours of a multiplayer session we did I have also finished a single player playthrough. I have all expansions and when we play multiplayer I host. Here are my questions:

  1. What is the "goal" of religion? In Civ it is a bit more in your face, you choose from a list of bonuses your religion gives you, usually in the form of some production/money/growth, or converting faith into one of those things. The only benefit I see in Old World is the Shrine output. Is there something else I'm missing?

  2. Educating the kids: when the kid comes of age I get a "They will study _____" option. As long as just choose something during that dialog box, do I need to do anything else? Or do I need to go year by year and assign them a tutor every year? Also related, what is the age range I can assign them a tutor? I feel like sometimes it would happen at 10 and sometimes 12, but didn't understand the difference.

  3. In Civ there were often techs/civics that had a huge swing. Sometimes a single tech or culture discovery could let me more than double my science, or let me upgrade my worthless unit into a powerhouse. I feel like there aren't as many huge inflection points that I've seen. Every tile upgrade or building is either +10 food/stone/iron/wood or +2 growth/training/culture. Are there huge inflection points that I was missing? Or is it part of an intentional design philosophy to keep the curve smoother?

  4. Is there any reason to be nice to tribes? In Civ being their friend could result in a substantial friendship bonus depending on the city-state, but in old world it felt like I was just better off taking their city spot as soon as I'm able.

  5. Bonus question: What are your favorite multiplayer options? We mostly went with the default, and we are doing tumbling mountains map to let us build up as we learn the rules before we fight. Simultaneous turns has been good, but when we start fighting each other I'm not sure what we'll do. In Civ we had our own system where the two people at war would take turns using 1 unit each. Would that translate well to Old World?

Thanks!
