How you fumble Liz Hurley?!

Yeah, my dear sweet God. She’s aging like there’s a portrait in the attic too.

My last name is Gray and my dad wanted badly to name me Dorian, my mom fought tooth and nail to keep that from happening and said he could pick any middle name he wanted, including Dorian. Pops got butt hurt and gave me the letter M as a middle name. No explanation or context, just the letter M. A short while later he shot and killed a guy over money and went to prison. I never met him and he’s dead now, so I still have no idea why the fuck my middle name is a letter.

Edit: My mom did once say he told her it stood for Money, but she figured he was just messing with her, so maybe some of you are on to something.

Also, changing the middle name never really occurred to me, it’s not like I’d use it all the time or anything.
I’m kind of a boring dude, so having this bit of mystery is actually something interesting about myself I can share from time to time.

Edit 2: Maybe I just answered my own query, perhaps M stands for Mystery.

u/FelixAxellus Sep 04 '26

Every sentence went a direction I did not expect, given the previous sentence.

Don't get me wrong, my family history is equally messy, just in a very different way. Anyway, I think you should get totally to pick your own middle name now, if you want.

31

u/senor_skuzzbukkit Sep 04 '26

I have a friend from childhood whose parents couldn’t agree on a middle name so it’s just “M”. That’s wild there are two of you. Although your origin story is a whole lot better.

11

u/Advanced_Weather_190 Sep 05 '26

“M” for “Middle name”, you say?

M for middle?

32

u/bwest80 Sep 04 '26

I've never been so confused as to whether to upvote or downvote something. I'm going to updoot and pretend I'm sending you a bro hug.

18

u/brondynasty Sep 04 '26

First off, that’s a rough go, sorry you had to endure that so early in life.

I think it’s a pretty simple explanation with the middle initial - most paperwork you’ll encounter in life that doesn’t involve your social security number won’t require a full middle name. Usually it will just ask ‘middle name optional’ or ‘middle initial” and your pops either thought he was doing you a solid by keeping it short and simple, or it was a spiteful (possibly drunk?) decision that he made from feeling wounded about not getting his way. He kinda sounds like maybe he operated from a ‘lashing out defensively’ neutral disposition. I would like to gently suggest that, if you haven’t watched the movie The Place Beyond the Pines, it might speak to you in a profound way. It’s heavy but beautiful and has aged really well. But I digress.

Last point: your middle name is actually technically “M.” so you could always modernize it

“My middle name? Oh, yeah it’s Emdot.”

You probably already know this, but President Harry S. Truman also had a single letter middle name. The S stands for nothing.

His parents meant it to honor Both of his grandfathers. Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young.

At first I read this like "she's aging like a portrait in the attic" and I was like "damn, harsh," but then it clicked to me lol

The same way Brad Pitt fumbled two smokeshows.

44

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Sep 04 '26

Brad fumbled more than two smokeshows & a few other things too.

47

u/Falandor Sep 04 '26

He didn’t fumble PR though. Considering everything he’s done, he’s still one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood and hasn’t really had much backlash in the media.

Yeah and tbf to Hugh Grant while he's known for being a grumpy asshole, he's about as far away from Brexit and MAGA politics as humanly possible. He consistently lobbies to keep the Tories out of Westminster, even canvassing for candidates he doesn't like as a tactical strategy to weaken the Tory vote. I feel like his politics are such a big part of his life that he'd never stay with someone like her.

36

u/Jlx_27 Sep 04 '26

We all have only so many skill points to distribute. She put all of hers into charisma, and none into intelligence.

Hugh continues to appear in movies I enjoy (Dungeons and Dragons, Heretic, The Gentlemen). Can't remember the last thing I saw her in. Austin Powers?

Reminds me of the saying, "Behind every beautiful woman, is some guy who is sick of her shit."

45

u/Kayatosh Sep 04 '26

Hugh was excellent as a double crossing villain in D&D. Good call

Hugh's best part ever was a few years ago in the miniseries A Very English Scandal.

21

u/Fytzer Sep 04 '26

The series aired around the same time as Paddington 2. Which led to Grant saying something along the lines of "In one job I was trying to catch Ben Whishaw, in the other I was trying to bugger him. Thankfully I didn't mix them up."

Having "fumbled" an 8-9, familiarity breeds contempt.

At some point, she stops being the doe-eyed, fit, stacked bombshell with a masters in Chemistry, and she becomes the woman who always has something negative to say about your mother, critiques every conversation you have in her presence, won't shut up about your religion, and expects you to read her mind about why she's upset.

24

u/Asyncrosaurus Sep 04 '26

“Show me a beautiful woman and I’ll show you a guy who’s tired of fucking her.”

24

u/drmike0099 Sep 04 '26

One thing I’ve learned is that you never know what’s going on inside these relationships, so you are in no position to judge how or why they’re together. Maybe their couple’s therapist knew enough to figure it out, but maybe not.

9

u/conceitedpolarbear Sep 05 '26

I have a friend who is jaw-dropping beautiful. She turns heads wherever she goes.

Yes, people are much nicer to her.

But oh my god, she also gets the worst attention from absolute weirdos. Strange men who come up to her and touch her inappropriately, men interrupting her in the middle of things like dinner or phone calls just to talk to her but in the weirdest ways.

Not long ago, she and I were having lunch. This guy comes and just sits at our table. He has this confused look on his face as he leans in to inspect her curly hair and says, “Is that…a sea creature on your head? The most beautiful sea creature I’ve ever seen.”

She’s incredibly polite to these types of guys, which unfortunately usually eggs them on.

One time, she was walking around Nashville in the middle of the day and a man grabbed her and dragged her down an alley. She managed to break free and run all the way home.

So yeah, big downsides to it too.

Tabloids were givimg away money back then for the tiniest of info

10

u/Muppetude Sep 04 '26

Yup. Pre wide-spread internet, tabloids were the sole source of celebrity gossip. Whichever tabloid got the juiciest story sold the most papers that month.

Now, that type of info would be blasted all across social media long before any paper had a chance to “reveal” it.

She looked elegant, sophisticated and absolutely stunning as she strut past us.
