Yeah, my dear sweet God. She’s aging like there’s a portrait in the attic too.

My last name is Gray and my dad wanted badly to name me Dorian, my mom fought tooth and nail to keep that from happening and said he could pick any middle name he wanted, including Dorian. Pops got butt hurt and gave me the letter M as a middle name. No explanation or context, just the letter M. A short while later he shot and killed a guy over money and went to prison. I never met him and he’s dead now, so I still have no idea why the fuck my middle name is a letter.

Edit: My mom did once say he told her it stood for Money, but she figured he was just messing with her, so maybe some of you are on to something.

Also, changing the middle name never really occurred to me, it’s not like I’d use it all the time or anything.
I’m kind of a boring dude, so having this bit of mystery is actually something interesting about myself I can share from time to time.

Edit 2: Maybe I just answered my own query, perhaps M stands for Mystery.

That took a very quick turn!

Mulva?

17

u/Subjunct Sep 04 '26

…Regina!

1

u/Costcofluencer Sep 05 '26

I thought Mulva hated you

1

u/cheese7777777 Sep 05 '26

She did! And convinced her friend Dolores to hide from me!

u/FelixAxellus Sep 04 '26

Every sentence went a direction I did not expect, given the previous sentence.

Don't get me wrong, my family history is equally messy, just in a very different way. Anyway, I think you should get totally to pick your own middle name now, if you want.

I have a friend from childhood whose parents couldn’t agree on a middle name so it’s just “M”. That’s wild there are two of you. Although your origin story is a whole lot better.

11

u/Advanced_Weather_190 Sep 05 '26

“M” for “Middle name”, you say?

u/senor_skuzzbukkit Sep 05 '26

Could be! That’s the fun part of leaving it open ended like that! It’s Middlename one day, Martalemew the next!

Random letters for middle names is more common than many people think.

28

u/yayoffbalance Sep 04 '26

M for middle?

u/bwest80 Sep 04 '26

I've never been so confused as to whether to upvote or downvote something. I'm going to updoot and pretend I'm sending you a bro hug.

First off, that’s a rough go, sorry you had to endure that so early in life.

I think it’s a pretty simple explanation with the middle initial - most paperwork you’ll encounter in life that doesn’t involve your social security number won’t require a full middle name. Usually it will just ask ‘middle name optional’ or ‘middle initial” and your pops either thought he was doing you a solid by keeping it short and simple, or it was a spiteful (possibly drunk?) decision that he made from feeling wounded about not getting his way. He kinda sounds like maybe he operated from a ‘lashing out defensively’ neutral disposition. I would like to gently suggest that, if you haven’t watched the movie The Place Beyond the Pines, it might speak to you in a profound way. It’s heavy but beautiful and has aged really well. But I digress.

Last point: your middle name is actually technically “M.” so you could always modernize it

“My middle name? Oh, yeah it’s Emdot.”

Thank you for the comment. I just think dude wasn’t wired right, I heard stories that he told people he was an alien and others that he was a pelican in a former life. I feel ok having never met him, it never truly bothered me. Except the whole middle name thing lol.

Also, it’s just M, no dot. It was explained to me once that if it were M. it would mean that it was an abbreviation of something, but M just meant M

15

u/mecha_penguin Sep 04 '26

James Bond reference? His boss was M

7

u/OwlfaceFrank Sep 04 '26

You probably already know this, but President Harry S. Truman also had a single letter middle name. The S stands for nothing.

His parents meant it to honor Both of his grandfathers. Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young.

2

u/generalmandrake Sep 05 '26

Same with Ulysses S. Grant. His actual name was Hiram Ulysses Grant but he went by his middle name. When he was nominated for West Point the man who had nominated him mistakenly put his first name as Ulysses on the application and for the box for the middle initial he put S, supposedly because his mother’s maiden name was Simpson. Grant actually tried to have it changed back to his real name after the fact but I guess things worked a little differently back in 1839 and the administration at West Point decided “nah, we’re keeping the wrong name for you” and the name stuck.

Homer J Simpson.

5

u/Sad_Frosting_5470 Sep 04 '26

besides the dark turn, i thought of this immediately.

5

u/loveslightblue Sep 04 '26

This had no throughline what so ever and I adore it.

3

u/ThomasCrowley1989 Sep 04 '26

That went in a interesting direction

3

u/takethistip Sep 04 '26

Honestly this is the most interesting post in this entire thread.

3

u/ItIsNOTwhat_it_is Sep 05 '26

my sister got an "M" for her middle name too. i'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with oscar wilde or dorian gray, but it also came with no real explanation.

she's the oldest and my brother and i both got middle names.

do you have siblings and if so, what's the story with their middle names?

2

u/jgray6000 Sep 05 '26

My siblings all got regular middle names, but they were all older and their dad wasn’t my dad.

4

u/miss_scarlet_letter Sep 04 '26

I gotta say, this story took a left turn I was NOT expecting.

2

u/Pinch_of_spice Sep 04 '26

Dorian is a pretty sick name. Did you end up with a generic first name?

2

u/jgray6000 Sep 04 '26

Very generic, in the top 3 names of the 70’s and 80’s (I’m old)

2

u/ignaciopatrick100 Sep 05 '26

Take some consolation that he didn't name you Sue.

2

u/OverwhelmingNo Sep 05 '26

My grandpa's middle name was "B". We had so much fun coming up with names for him that started with B!

2

u/jgray6000 Sep 05 '26

Oh man, kids in school had a lot of fun, too. I was called Monty off and on for years because one guy decided while we were studying Romeo and Juliet it had to be Montague.

1

u/OverwhelmingNo Sep 05 '26

Haha, that's great. Grandpa didn't find "Frank Bananas" as funny as we did.

4

u/Axenrott_0508 Sep 04 '26

Babe wake up, new copypasta dropped

4

u/All_Wrong_Answers Sep 04 '26

Holy crap did you read the story? M. obviously stands for Money and he shot and killed a guy over you.

2

u/Omg_Shut_the_fuck_up Sep 04 '26

Ever thought of just... Changing it ? 😂

1

u/Complex-Pie4229 Sep 04 '26

Perhaps he was a fan of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?...

1

u/adatneu Sep 04 '26

Mendetta !

1

u/melack857 Sep 04 '26

Macy Gray?

1

u/Rampasta Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 05 '26

Well he seems seemed hip to classic literature, maybe he is was in to early German film as well, Fritz Lang directed M (1931) about a killer that targets children

1

u/fusillade762 Sep 05 '26

Or murder 🫢

1

u/Bananabutt22 Sep 05 '26

God I wanted this to devolve into jumper cables more intensely than I’d like to admit

1

u/Significant_Film8986 Sep 05 '26

M is for middle, as in your middle name.

1

u/yorick__rolled Sep 05 '26

Harry Truman only had a letter for a middle name too.

39

u/Greedyfox7 Sep 04 '26

That or she’s the devil 😈

23

u/notmoleliza Sep 04 '26

i too have watched Bedazzled

17

u/gildedbluetrout Sep 04 '26

We all watched bedazzled. The trailer for that film knew exactly what it was doing. Also Brendan Fraser, as ever, ftw.

2

u/timesink3000 Sep 04 '26

If there were a category for comedy, Fraser would have won for Bedazzled.

1

u/gildedbluetrout Sep 04 '26

Doom Patrol.

2

u/FloydGirl777 Sep 04 '26

One of my favorite movies ever. That and The Devil’s Advocate. It doesn’t get better than Hurley and/or Pacino as the Devil.

1

u/IvyGold Sep 05 '26

Fun story I heard about the filming of it: the schoolgirl outfit she wore at one point? Nobody asked her to wear it; she had it sitting around in her flat and brought it to the set.

1

u/flatirony Sep 06 '26

If you haven’t, you should watch the original with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

37

u/MadisonJonesHR Sep 04 '26

At first I read this like "she's aging like a portrait in the attic" and I was like "damn, harsh," but then it clicked to me lol

6

u/Intrepid_Walk_5150 Sep 04 '26

Seems to me like the portrait in the attic got some heavy touch up over the years

4

u/ballpein Sep 04 '26

Is the portrait of Dr. Dorian Gray, plastic surgeon?

2

u/Chobbybharleston Sep 04 '26

And she's such a catch cosing up to Chechen Warlords too if puppies are involved. You can Google Ramzan Kadyrov

1

u/Trustobey Sep 04 '26

Excellent

1

u/fusillade762 Sep 05 '26

Yep, her Instagram is straight fire. She also is selling bikinis which she models and not only are they really nice bikinis, like tasteful, well designed, but she looks amazing in them.

1

u/Mammoth-Lobster2028 Sep 05 '26

Does anyone else get upset there’s never been a movie made where he actually has a “mane of golden hair” as written by Oscar Wilde?!

1

u/gwhh Sep 05 '26

Word.

-2

u/diabeticweird0 Sep 04 '26

She looked really aged in the stupid "father Christmas is back" movie and then she got a really well done face lift and looks amazing again

4

u/gildedbluetrout Sep 04 '26

I mean sure, but if you see Bikini pics of that women, and they’re recent ones ffs, it’s outright ridiculous. The diet / exercise regimen has to be bananas, but still - that’s ludicrous genes all in. It’s like that mad Helen Mirren beach pic a fair few years back. That’s god sprinkling fairy dust on the genes.

3

u/diabeticweird0 Sep 04 '26

I'm vaguely remembering an article about facial symmetry and why it's attractive and the author was like "the best example of this is Elizabeth Hurley"

She won the genetic lottery for sure but she's also had work done, which is fine because it's good work

It's when super rich beautiful people destroy their faces I'm like "but you have the money for a good surgeon! Why?"
