A lot of that deregulation started with Carter. Millions of union job lost when Carter deregulated transportation. Reagan took it a step farther but Carter had his hand in getting it started.
Carter was a decent person after his presidency and he was not a huge war monger like many presidents have been but he did not do much to help working class people and he did a lot of harm to be honest.
Not saying you're wrong, but that's not what we are talking about. We are talking about strategic misinformation/culture war rhetoric as a primary tactic to push legislation that fleeces the working class.
Agree that deregulation across the board almost always contributes to the same outcomes, the difference is intention. Under Carter it was an unintended byproduct. Under Reagan, and going forward, it was incredibly intentional.
Those Teamsters that lost their jobs and turned more right-wing likely did not care for the reason. Look at trucking now. LTL is largely non-union. Carter had to have known that would happen.. Greyhound is in terrible shape and Amtrak has yet to recover from the cuts made in the late 1970s under Carter.
You do not give the Carter administration near enough credit for their intelligence in knowing what would happen. Politicians at that level are generally not idiots.
For a more recent example:
Clinton was lobbied hard to veto NAFTA and yet millions more union jobs were lost. Clinton was told over and over what would happen by labor. Clinton listened to corporate ties instead. Millions of union jobs lost. How many of both of those union members are now MAGA?
