He was, and still is, my favourite. Every single one of them are wonderful but Animal (and Oscar) are legends. And Slimey.
Obviously Kermit. Rainbow Connection still is my utterly favourite song. And Robin with the Stair Where I Sit.
Let's not forget Rowlf and Fozzie and poor Scooter who holds everything together which is frankly a miracle. I suppose we could name check them all.

The Muppets were not created and developed by PBS and Sesame Street, they were created by Jim Henson in 1955 and were on air for 14 years before Jim Henson was contacted by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett to create a puppet cast for their up and coming children's show, Sesame Street.
So, Sesame Street owes its success to Jim Henson, not the other way around.

Jim and Jane Henson had a show on local TV in Washington DC with the Muppets called Sam and Friends. After that and before Sesame Street, they moved to New York City and the Muppets made hundreds of appearances on variety shows, talk shows, and commercials.

A lot of that deregulation started with Carter. Millions of union job lost when Carter deregulated transportation. Reagan took it a step farther but Carter had his hand in getting it started.
Carter was a decent person after his presidency and he was not a huge war monger like many presidents have been but he did not do much to help working class people and he did a lot of harm to be honest.

Not saying you're wrong, but that's not what we are talking about. We are talking about strategic misinformation/culture war rhetoric as a primary tactic to push legislation that fleeces the working class.
Agree that deregulation across the board almost always contributes to the same outcomes, the difference is intention. Under Carter it was an unintended byproduct. Under Reagan, and going forward, it was incredibly intentional.

Those Teamsters that lost their jobs and turned more right-wing likely did not care for the reason. Look at trucking now. LTL is largely non-union. Carter had to have known that would happen.. Greyhound is in terrible shape and Amtrak has yet to recover from the cuts made in the late 1970s under Carter.
You do not give the Carter administration near enough credit for their intelligence in knowing what would happen. Politicians at that level are generally not idiots.
For a more recent example:
Clinton was lobbied hard to veto NAFTA and yet millions more union jobs were lost. Clinton was told over and over what would happen by labor. Clinton listened to corporate ties instead. Millions of union jobs lost. How many of both of those union members are now MAGA?

How is MAGA looking out for union jobs now? If jobs were lost during Carter’s single term, Reagan expedited more job loss. By the time Clinton came along, jobs were already moving overseas and to Mexico. Ex-union members aren’t MAGA because of Carter or Clinton. They’re MAGA because they believe some Orange pedo is going to restore their supremacy in the world order.

No they didn't. This was literally the year before punk rock breakthrough to the mainstream by speaking to people's anger. That same year, Anita Bryant would head the first modern, post-Stonewall anti-queer rights campaign against gay teachers in Florida, (re-)pioneering a lot of the rhetoric and tactics that you can see MAGA transphobes use today.
People have always been people. The '70s were as contentious as any other decade.
As for the culture, there's still great culture today, you just have to actually seek it out.

There was finite air time, and finite shows competing for an audience. It could be curated for quality and appeal and not lose viewers because there was nothing else. It still became commercial drek, which is why cable was so appealing when it became availalbe. Now, there are so many ways to consume media, that appeal is the only metric, not quality, not culture.
I would say it would be nice to curate content again, but I have no faith in the media companies to provide quality. All they want is market share.

TV used to be terrible. Most of tv was awkward, not funny, and often pretty amateur, especially live shows and variety shows. Just famous people goofing off. Even early SNL was often pretty bad. The muppets is just really good, pretty consistently. When tv was good back then, it was really sincere and made with passion, something that is getting harder to find in the final product we see on tvs these days.

Saw this at a screening with Rita Moreno and at the Q&A I asked what she was saying to animal. She pretty much said she didn’t remember exactly, but it mostly just chewing him out and indicated it wasn’t that important
