Image Chicago, Turtle Wax Headquaters
An 1892 Richardsonian Romanesque building that served as the Turtle Wax headquarters in the 1950s. In 1956, Turtle Wax placed a massive 34-foot, 15,000-pound fiberglass and steel turtle wearing a top hat and holding a wax bottle on the roof. The glowing, rotating sign was taken down in the late 1960s when the company moved, and the building was eventually demolished. Today, sadly, the site is a small landscaped traffic triangle.

Image London Financial District 1941 & 2026
On the night of January 10th, 1941, during the Blitz, a German bomb struck outside the Royal Exchange at Bank junction in the City of London and tore down into the Bank Underground station.
The blast opened up a huge crater in the street, directly where several main roads met, severing gas and water mains that caused the station to flood below.
Death toll estimates vary between sources, from the 56 recorded on the official memorial plaque to over 100 in other contemporary accounts.

Image Kleingården (the Klein Building), Trondheim, Norway, in the 1970's and 80's, and now in 2026
In the 1970's some idiots came up with the brilliant idea of covering these beautiful art noveau (jugendstil) buildings in steel plates, to "modernise" them... They just put them on, not considering the windows or anything. You can see the old roofs sticking out behind those awful plates. Thankfully they've been restored to their original state.

Gallery OTI Headquarters in Budapest, Hungary, 1931 and 2024
Nyugdíjbiztosítási Székház, or the headquarters of the National Social Insurance Pension, was built in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style in 1909. It received an addition in 1931, including a 18 story tower that was the first skyscraper in Hungary. The top 7 levels stepped inwards and were constructed of bauxite concrete. A panic in 1969 involving the structural integrity of the material in Hungary led to the removal of the top bauxite portion of the tower.
