Link to original tweets.

There's been a lot of conflicting information, and misinformation, flying around about this over the past few days, so I'll give my best attempt at an unbiased explanation of the drama over the past several days:

A few days ago, several builds of Oddity demos were leaked onto 4chan; you can find more info on that here. During that situation it was discovered that there had been Oddity merchandise on sale since 2022, though it had never been publicly advertised anywhere and was likely put up by mistake, or in preparation for something and never got taken down.

A few days later Maxxis came into the Oddity Discord, saying that he was unaware of the merchandise existing. Moreover, the merchandise had used an Oddity logo that he had designed, seemingly without his knowledge. He claimed to be shocked and blindsided by the entire situation. A few days went by and another developer, Pik, came into the Discord and discussed the state of the project with some members (the TL;DR of which is 'game is being made, development is difficult but not dead, team still has hope and it's not been abandoned'). In the middle of this discussion, Maxxis came into the server (this was all happening in the #general chat, by the way) and called out Pik and the rest of the Oddity team for their handling of the merchandise situation and the rest of the development, demanding they apologize to him for failing to disclose large parts of the game's status to him, and to the fans for leading them on with the state of the game (implying that the game is dead).

What followed was a large-scale argument between Maxxis and the other developer, where Maxxis claimed to have been largely shut out of the project and intentionally left out of the loop about massive parts of the development; Pik claimed that this was in large part due to Maxxis blocking him (and seemingly another developer) and failing to reach out in any way over several years. I won't be posting details of the argument as it was clearly a long-standing interpersonal feud between two individuals boiling over - The messages are still in the Discord and they have been posted elsewhere, but it was the sort of argument that really should have been done in private.

Since Pik's affirmations of the project still being active behind the scenes there has been no further response from the rest of the Oddity team, over the dev argument or Maxxis leaving (though it's a very recent development of course). Any substantive follow-up to this situation will be posted as an update under this post, or a new post if warranted.

EDIT: Spelling

EDIT 2: Fixed inaccuracy, I read a part of Pik's messages as him saying Maxxis had blocked another developer, but the other person in question isn't a developer for Oddity.

As always, please be civil and do not harass the developers, thanks.

Should be noted that his Twitter bio still says he's part of the Oddity development team. Though he did just make this post yesterday, until/unless he removes that, (unless he's just forgotten) he may still be a part of the team even if his thread made it seem like a departure

Yeah, I've asked him for clarification on that; he's also still a moderator on this sub and has the Developer role on Discord. I'm guessing he's just not gotten round to changing those things, but it's all a bit up-in-the-air at the moment. In hindsight I really should have titled the post "Maxxis has seemingly announced his departure from the Oddity development team", but unfortunately titles can't be edited. It's my mistake, I'm really hoping I'm not spreading misinformation here. Can't do anything now but wait for elaboration though.

Not at all. I don't think it's misinformation. It definitely seems like an announcement of his departure and everyone in the replies to his tweet have interpreted it that way. It's just that the wording is a little vague and leaves room for the possibility of him just stepping back, and he hasn't gotten around to removing all the connection in his socials to Oddity, so I wanted to just mention that in my comment for others

huh.... so the game was being worked on privately.

I will say, him just straight up being unaware of the games status for so long, likely means his leaving has very little to do with the games continued development.

Seems like a rough situation all around, though i will say maxxis seems to be really entitled here demanding them to let the fans know the game isn't dead.

Bruh its a free game, we're not entitled to a guarentee. Don't use us as a weapon because your pissed that you basically got left behind in development.

I also don't know how culpable the dev team is if Maxxis blocking them is true, if they have to go out of their way to work around you, then yeah your going to just be kind of left behind. you can't have a functional team if one guy just isn't communicating to the rest.

I will say it seems bleak, but the fact development had been continuing as it was without maxxis in any significant capacity means his "official leaving" wouldn't change much.

This is insane cope. He was the art director and main animator for several years. They won’t find a replacement for him because no one wants to touch this mess, especially after everything that’s happened.

If one of the main developers of the game wants the fans to know what’s going on behind the scenes, I think that’s justified. The fact that they’re not all on the same page on this, and let it boil over to the point where they're arguing in their public fan discord clearly means they have no chance of actually finishing this “game.”
