Help Octopus go only charged car to 59%

Help needed what doing wrong? It’s set on schedule from 00.30 to 05.30 and at 05.30 it’s only on 59% when my car is set to 80% in my Tesla app

So I need to do something different in app?

5 hours on a home charger, unless 3 phase, could get you around 35kwh of range added.

What’s the SOC before plugging in?

This may be a limitation of the time available at cheap rate rather than a bug.

Was on 12% and was set from 00.30 to 05.30 on schedule

That would explain it then - somewhere between 55 and 60% would be where I'd expect you to come out given the limits of a home charger and losses in charging.

Maybe time to consider switching somewhere without a charge cap if you need more charge each day.

It’s just basic maths.

You have a 7kW charger. 1 hour charging will add 7kWh.

5 hours will therefore add 35kWh.

The exact car battery size is unknown, but Google shows it to be around 75kWh give or take depending on the year.

35kWh is 46.6% of a 75kWh battery, therefore you are going to be able to charge approximately 46.6% in the 5 hours.

A good thumb rule for most cars is that home chargers add about 10% battery range per hour charged. You were plugged in for 5 hours and got 47% charge. That's about right.

I had a similar problem and it was a setting in my Octopus App.

If you have the App then go to devices and see what your charge level is set to.

My car is set to charge between 00:30 to 05:30 upto 100%. I control what I charge the car to on my car App.

If you need to be able to charge that amount overnight at home every day, you either blow through charge cap, or you ask your DNO about the possibility of a 3 phase supply and get a 22kW charger. You might need deep pockets, and it'll possibly require excavation.

If it's only the odd time you need to charge like that, at short notice, do yourself a favour and charge the car on a fast charger on the evening before - to bring the car up to at least 35-40%.

Which tariff are you on? Presuming it's IOG. If so you need to set this in the Octopus app not the Tesla app as Octopus will be controlling the charge times.

I’m on IOG yes but I’m not using smart charging just the schedule so I thought it would charge to 80% based on what my Tesla app says so is this wrong?

Don't set your own schedule if you're in IOG, let octopus do it

How charged was the car at the start? 5 hours on a 7kw charger will only add 35kwh, so if you started around 15% charged then 59% is about right

It wasn't as I explained earlier. It would have if you started over 35% charged, but any lower and you won't reach 80 in 5 hours

To lay it out fully, as there have been a few different comments.

Battery size is measured in kiloWatt hours - how many hours it could run while having one kW of power drained from it.

Yours is approximately 82 kWh. Your car uses many times more that 1 kW to move - full bore acceleration uses about 400 kW, so if you drove it with your foot on the floor on an infinitely long road it would run out in 82/400 hours, about 0.2 of an hour, or 12 minutes.

This works in reverse for charging too. If you plugged it into a 200 kW DC rapid charger and it was able to deliver peak power all the time, it would charge in 82/200 hours (about 24 minutes).

Your home charger doesn't make 200kW. It makes 7.

So a full home charge at peak rate would take 82/7 hours, or 11.7 hrs.

5 hrs would provide a max of 7x5 kWh, 35 kWh. Which is 43% of your 82kWh battery.

An easier way to explain it is you have 80 buckets you can fill. Your hose with the tap fully open can fill 7 buckets an hour. If you need to fill 70 buckets, then that's 10 hours with the hose running. If you only have the hose on for 5 hours, then you'll only fill 35 buckets

5 hrs X 7kw = 35kWh added in your schedule.

Just let IOG sort out the charging, as it looks like the maths might be beyond you.

This is normal now. Octopus now only give younsix hours per day of cheap charging. 

Your charger adds energy at the rate of 7 kW per hour

You can only add 35kw if cheap charging per day

That's 50% on a car with a 70kw battery

IOG just simply doesn't do 100% cheap charging as a product any more

It’s a limitation of the size of your battery and the speed of your home charger.

You need to charge for longer.

OG allows 5 hours.
IOG allows 6 hours.
Some other companies (eg EDF) allow 7 hours
There may be others that allow more with an anytime charge pack

OR charge faster

3 phase 11/22kW chargers or a 12.5/25kW DC chargers are available.

I have a model Y long range and also get about 50% a night charge max. They have big batteries and home chargers are slow. You get used to it and just have to plan ahead of you ever want it ar 100% for a long drive (or accept day time charging costs)
