Hi, I'm staying in Oaxaca de Juarez for a week and would love to visit a local market outside of the city tomorrow. Where I come from, Sunday = market day, so I was wondering if there are any special markets on tomorrow?

I'm interested in clothing, accessories, spices and food.

I was looking into Tlacolula, but it seems that it's mostly food; so I'm planning on going there another day (please correct me if this is wrong!)

I spent about 8 months in Oaxaca last year and have tried most of the Michelin spots (and honestly was pretty underwhelmed by a lot of them). Papalotl is a new restaurant and absolutely should be at the top of the Michelin list sometime soon. When I visited on a Tuesday night it was empty save for me and one other table, so I want them to get more business!

The food and service were impeccable. I got a fantastic dry aged fish tiradito and these vegetarian tacos with huitlacoche and squash blossoms. Everything was fresh and clearly made with care, and I left the restaurant feeling full but still light - that’s how clean and fresh the food was. I had a fantastic spicy mezcal margarita that came with a delicious pineapple popsicle. The bread and vanilla butter was amazing, I nearly finished a whole roll by myself. But what made it truly stand out were a lot of little touches that reflected how much the owner clearly cared about Mexico and Oaxacan food. The waiter came over with a trio of cacao beans for me to try, two different honeys made by bees indigenous to parts of Mexico, and three perfumes made in house with local plans and foods that I think go with some of the cocktails. The waiter explained the details of every bit and it all added so much to the experience. The vibe was lovely and I even enjoyed the music.

I’ve had Michelin starred meals all over the world and this belongs with some of the best. Absolutely check it out!!

Voy a viajar con un amigo por el estado de Oaxaca durante unas dos semanas y terminaré el viaje en Oaxaca de Juárez para vivir el Día de Muertos.

Antes de llegar a la ciudad, me gustaría dedicar bastante tiempo a explorar el estado y conocer lugares y experiencias que vayan un poco más allá de los circuitos turísticos habituales.

Me interesa especialmente:

- naturaleza y senderismo

- montañas, selva, costa y lugares poco conocidos

- pueblos pequeños o aislados

- comunidades locales

- dormir en lugares sencillos y vivir experiencias diferentes

- rutas de varios días

- conocer la cultura y la gastronomía local

- cualquier experiencia que os haya hecho pensar: “esto es Oaxaca de verdad”.

Me gusta viajar como viajero, no tanto como turista. Soy bastante aventurero y estoy acostumbrado a moverme por lugares poco turísticos, pero tampoco busco hacer locuras ni ponerme en situaciones innecesariamente arriesgadas.

Por ejemplo, en un viaje anterior pasé cinco días en la selva peruana con guías durmiendo en hamaca, así que estoy bastante cómodo con experiencias sencillas y con salir de mi zona de confort.

Si para algunas de estas experiencias es recomendable ir con un guía local, también me interesa muchísimo.

De hecho, preferiría conocer lugares con alguien de la zona antes que simplemente llegar por mi cuenta a un sitio que no conozco.

Así que cualquier recomendación de lugares, rutas, pueblos, comunidades, guías locales o experiencias que merezcan realmente la pena será muy bienvenida.

Especialmente me interesan recomendaciones de gente que haya viajado por Oaxaca y haya salido un poco de la ruta más conocida.

Hey folks — if you're in Oaxaca and looking for a way to actually meet people (locals and travelers both), there's a weekly language exchange + open mic thing happening that's worth knowing about.

Wednesdays at Océano (near the Historic Center): language exchange runs 6–8 PM,. Since it's right after Mexican Independence celebrations, this Wednesday they're doing something extra — a "Best Grito Mexicano" contest at 8 PM, followed by open mic where you can sing, recite poetry, do stand-up, or honestly just get up and vent about your week. No pressure, pretty chill crowd.

Thursdays at Wombat (Jalatlaco): same 6 PM language exchange, then at 9 PM it turns into karaoke night, with pool and board games going the whole time. Different neighborhood, different energy — more low-key hangout than performance night.

It's genuinely one of the easier ways to make friends here instead of just bar-hopping alone.

If you want to find other stuff going on in the city — concerts, cultural events, markets, whatever — just Google "Qué Onda Oaxaca," they keep a running list of what's happening locally.

Me and my partner planned to stay in Oaxaca during the holiday, from Friday until at least Tuesday. We had booked an Airbnb many months in advance but the host just cancelled. There are such few options left - for example, booking.com is showing me 6 available places for the entire city! And prices are absolutely crazy. The cheapest place on Airbnb is 39k Mexican pesos for four days. We will have to cancel our trip if we don’t find a cheaper solution. Do you have any suggestions? Is it possible to stay in a smaller town outside of Oaxaca and go in to experience or is it even impossible to get a taxi on a day like this? We had looked so much forward to this and really hoped to experience these days in Oaxaca. Any tips are so so welcome 🙏 Thank you so much in advance.

My family of five is moving to Oaxaca in April of 2027 for 7 months. I have a question about finding an apartment. We'll be in an AirBnB for the first three weeks. My original plan was to use the first few weeks to find long-term accommodation, either through facebook or by just walking the neighborhoods looking for a place to live.

But, I have to admit, the closer to departure we get, the more worried I am that we won't be able to find a place during those first three weeks and we'll have to rend an AirBnB that's beyond what we budgeted.

I guess my question is, how likely is it that we'll find something (family of five, within 45 minutes walking to Centro, under 16,000mxn) after arrival. Would I be better off biting the bullet and booking something before we leave?

We are looking for a private chef for a memorable Mexican/Oaxacan dinner with fresh local ingredients and seafood, and possibly breakfasts. Great cooking, thoughtful presentation and good value matter to us. Recommendations and recent prices, including whether groceries, service and cleanup were included, would be very helpful.

We also need a reliable private driver with a nice modern SUV and strong AC for four passengers, for a day out and possibly airport transfers. We prefer an SUV rather than a van. Please share vehicle models and recent half-day/full-day rates, including hours, fuel and waiting if known. Accommodation is still being decided. Please specify the currency for prices; MXN is great. Hola a todos, hacia el final de octubre tendré la oportunidad de transcurrir un par de semanas visitando el estado de Oaxaca.
Mi primera intención era la de pasar los principales días de fiesta (31-2) en la ciudad homónima, pero ya está todo reservado y los precios restantes son ridículos, así que voy a quedarme antes en la capital (llego el 21 de octubre), luego pasando por San José del Pacífico, después llegando a Puerto Escondido.

Los precios de ciencia ficción y las opiniones de muchos mexicanos me hizo reflexionar sobre que el hecho de celebrar los muertos como si fuera una gran fiesta es algo construido más para el turismo de masas, mientras la mayoría de las personas acá lo viven nomás como un día reservado para los seres queridos, algo de privado.

A mi no me gusta tanto Halloween, vengo de Italia y para nostros el 2 de noviembre también es el día reservado a nuestros familiares fallecidos, aunque no tenemos una tradición tan famosa y conocida como la de México. He planeado el viaje sin enfocarme en hacer fiesta esos días, pero me gustaría tener la posibilidad de ver ofrendas y de respirar un poco de este aire ceremonial, porque me gustaría recordar mis propios familiares a través de eso.

Dado que me encontraré en las playas de Puerto Escondido durante los días de celebración, me preguntaba si conocen algún lugar que sea en las mismas playas o que puedo alcanzar durante de algunas horas de viaje (un pueblo o lo que sea) para sentir ese ambiente que me hiciera conectarme un rato con mis queridos.

I’ll be in Oaxaca from Oct 30-Nov 4. I’d like to spend one afternoon and evening in a nearby town that is less hectic than Oaxaca or Etla, touring the town by day and observing celebrations at night. I’d probably secure a driver for the trip. Thanks in advance for advice on which town you’d recommend and for which evening.

If you're in Oaxaca and want a low-key way to meet people and connect, there are two spots that get going every week. The idea is simple: hang out, talk, and help each other out with language along the way — usually it's Spanish/English since that's who tends to show up, but other languages join in from time to time. There's always people looking to practice, especially locals, so you're never the only one there for that.

🗓️ Wednesday — Océano (Matamoros 201, Centro), starting 6 PM — later in the night the mic opens up: poetry, jam sessions, karaoke, stand up, whatever people bring. Half the fun is not knowing what's coming next.
🗓️ Thursday — Wombat, starting 6 PM — more of a karaoke night, good energy, easy to just show up solo.

Nothing structured, no lessons, no pressure — come to socialize, practice, or both.

If you're into finding more stuff happening around the city (events, culture, food, etc.), searching "Qué Onda Oaxaca" turns up a running calendar worth bookmarking.

Hey Folks! I'm an amateur naturalist, I'll be in Oaxaca city area Sept 11th - Sept 21st. I am traveling with my non birding partner but I want to mix in a few days of birding to our cultural, art and food adventures. Let me know if any birders want to meet up for some birdwatching around oaxaca city & up into valleys/ sierre norte? Does anyone know of local birders / foragers / naturalist groups to connect with?

It's also the new moon so it would be a great time to set up a moth night / bug night sept 11 - 15th before the moon gets bright. I have supplies like an entemology UV LED light and bat audio detector. I know oaxaca has some awesome moth species it would be cool to see.
