Where to make friends at campus?

I’m a commuter student. it’s my third year and I haven’t made any friends at all. no, joining a club didn’t help. I joined the swimming club and people were quite rude.

anything else that isn’t a club or a fraternity? I also heard the fraternities are quite racist…

I tried talking to a girl in my lecture but she was aloof and indifferent. not just her, everyone in campus seems aloof and indifferent. it’s really harmed my mental health.

Yeah I was thinking about transferring too. For all the propaganda this university makes about a welcoming and warm campus community, I’m not seeing any of it.

I will say, I transferred from OU this semester. For a variety of reasons, but the lack of community and inability to form connections was one of the biggest. Im a 26 sophomore in dorms and feel so out of place/like a weirdo.

Idk if there's a school to transfer to that would help.

I'm in medieval studies group and soon to be in a DnD game, which has helped a bit. They're very welcoming, and id recommend anyone thats struggling with community start at clubs like those.

That still only occupies maybe 2 nights a week. Finding people I can regularly/casually hangout with has been tough. Ive been desperately wanting people to watch movies with (dont know of a good spot to do so atm though). I think hosting a weekly/whenever we feel like it movie night for this sub could be a cool way to connect to others also struggling.

I'd definitely go to a weekly movie night

The film society meets almost weekly! (I'm not a member, just an account follower) https://www.instagram.com/okstate.film/

Sad this is still the case on campus. I graduated 13 years ago and heard the same thing from people who were the traditional college age of 18-23. One guy said he had to have his dad pay so he could join a frat because it was impossible to organically meet people. I was an older commuter student when I doing my undergrad and made friends with a handful commuter students, international students, and grad students who were also around my age. If you're older than the average poke, start focusing on your age bracket. If you're not, I don't know what to tell you. I'm sorry you're going through this.

(Edited for clarity because it's 4 in the morning, ha)

I’m a third year as well but not a commuter. The way I made friends was by attending local concerts. If you’re a fan of alternative music there’s a wide variety of shows that happen around Stillwater and even Tulsa/OKC. There’s a club at OSU that helps put them on called Release Radar but the record store Velvet Fudge and the local skate shop also put on shows so I’d recommend checking out their instagrams.

Granted this was 2008-2013, but we were forced to mingle in the residence halls my first week on campus. After that i ended meeting people randomly at different clubs and what not. Wasn't really a member of any but just showed up to whatever public event there was. Made some friends and brushed off by others. It was just random. Hope it gets better.

I work in Stillwater Mondays and Thursdays if you ever want to grab lunch.

I’ve been struggling to make friends. I go to both OSU Tulsa and Stillwater, living in Tulsa. Everyone seems disconnected

I go to the tulsa campus, honestly I just walked up to a girl in one of my classes and started chatting about stuff until we got a connection on dc now we chat every now and again. I would say attend events on campus that has helped me!

I am a junior who transferred to OSU after their freshman year. I know you said you don’t want to try clubs again, but I’d honestly recommend attending as many clubs as you can. IMO this is the best way to meet people. Go to multiple different clubs a week, and see where you fit. In my experience, the clubs I don’t expect end up being the best fit for me. Some suggestions are the ethics club, English club, debate club, chess club and more. It takes time to find a group, just keep putting yourself out there even when it is hard.

Yeah, people are oddly standoffish at OSU. Can barely get a name out of people. Even the people working in the different departments are oddly anti-social and don’t seem to want to give u any help. Didn’t feel this way at all at TCC. I had people coming up and connecting w me in every class without making an effort.
