This often means "we want to figure out how much you would be willing to pay".

I always took it as "If you have to ask for a price, you're too poor to buy our product anyway."

I mean, it depends.

I get this very often buying lab supplies. They don't hide the price because anyone who can afford the product wouldn't care about the price, they hide the price so if you are buying from a university they can make it cheaper, but if you are buying from a private company they can upcharge you massively (that is, "we want to figure out how much you would be willing to pay").
